May 18, 2013, Saturday: Kingston Ave's Weekend Walk — Brooklynian

May 18, 2013, Saturday: Kingston Ave's Weekend Walk

Would you like to be a part of planning and organizing the first "Weekend Walk" along Kingston Avenue?

Theme: "5 hours, 3 blocks, 1 community."

The Center for Court Innovation (under its local affiliate the Crown Heights Community Mediation Center) is going to need help filling up these three blocks with fun and exciting activities and workshops.

The New York City Department of Transportation is partnering with community groups to present Weekend Walks at 19 sites in all five boroughs from May through October. Local merchants' associations, community groups, and business improvement districts host Weekend Walks as a fun way to highlight local businesses and cultural institutions. The Walks are temporary pedestrian streets that create great opportunities for New Yorkers to meet, see their neighborhoods in a new way, and relax on summer

weekends.

They have applied for and been granted a permit for Saturday, May 18, 2013.

The Crown Heights Community Mediation Center, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce, and the Kingston Avenue Merchants Association are thrilled to announce the first ever “The Kingston Avenue Festival.” In partnership with the NYC Department of Transportation, the Kingston Avenue Festival will feature a number of activities including music, arts and crafts, workshops, and youth programming all along Kingston Avenue.

The Kingston Avenue Festival, scheduled for Saturday, May 18, 2013 is the very first of its kind. It will turn Kingston Avenue from Pacific Street through Park Place into a pedestrian walkway filled with fun. This is an innovative way to highlight local businesses and community institutions. Our success depends on your support and participation which can then lead to future annual bigger multi-block festivals along Kingston Avenue for multiple weekends.

You can become a part of this historical event:

  • I find it funny that they don't include the blocks up to Lincoln Place as between Park Pl and Lincoln there are many businesses including the Crown Heights Mediation Center.

  • They seemed to have been faced with a choice between serving the growing business community near EP, OR the residents of Albany Houses.

    They chose Albany Houses

  • Right, because those three extra blocks would have made a huge difference. Either way, whether official or not, the street should be closed from EP to Atlantic for those few hours and let the residents decide where they would want to walk.

I have a suspicion that the brown dog that I use as my avatar will be in that dog parade!

  • Last Thursday some gals asked to put up their poster advertising the walk in my window and I'm on St. Johns and Troy. According to them, since it was the first year that this was being done the DOT only allowed them to close the street between St. Marks and Pacific. If it goes well, they'll be able to shut it off from EP next year.

  • Staff and volunteers are out again today:

  • The event is getting a little press:

Word is not only getting out re: when and where this festival is being held, but WHY this festival is being held.

  • After some back and forth, the agenda for the stage has been set:
