Prospect Lefferts Gardens safety
Hi, everyone. I am moving to New York on June 1st, 2013. I have an apartment with a roommate lined up in Greenwood Heights, but she wants to explore other areas. She is looking at an apartment about $200 cheaper in Prospect Lefferts Gardens off of Church Avenue. We will be 2 blocks from a subway stop. Is this area safe for 2 single Caucasian women in their 20s? The only reason I ask is because I see many mixed reviews all over the Internet about crime and violence. Any help/ advice would be great!

Nice area. Good subway and bus service, lots of stores and gyms. Not sure what you're comparing it to in terms of safety. But your race shouldn't determine your safety in the area.

A friend had trouble with being catcalled and followed by men on occasion when living near the Parkside stop.

catcalled and followed by men on occasion
My late mom was very fair skinned and worked in ENY. After work, certain men would follow her until she reached the bus to get to her apartment in Starrett City.
She was understandably nervous about being followed around and grew even more fearful when they would smile at her when she boarded the bus. After all, these guys turned out to be members of the Jolly Stompers.Eventually she realized what the following and the smile all meant: they knew she was a community activist who just wanted a clean and decent neighborhood for everyone and that their smile was a reassurance that no one would come near or menace her in any way so long as they were around.
Such is life in Brooklyn!

I've lived in PLG since 1974 with no safety problems. That being said, Church Avenue is not , by any stretch of the imagination in Prospect Lefferts Gardens, not that that part of Flatbush is unsafe either. However, I would question the ethics and/or honesty of any RE person who tries to sell Church Avenue as being in PLG.

The border patrol is out in force.
Bob, I had hopes that you could post a statement (here or on brownstoner) without mentioning yet again that you've lived in PLG since the 1970s. Alas, it was not to be.

Nonsense Jack. Scroll down the list of recent posts [both here and on Brownstoner]; I only mention my length of residence when I post on topics like this, where IMO it's relevant.

The border patrol is out in force. For good reason. Church Avenue is not within the PLG catchment. No way. That is Flatbush.

Well, all of PLG is actually in Flatbush, but Church Avenue is the very heart of the historic town; PLG is at the northern edge
-
It's a few blocks away. It's certainly not like calling Utica "Prospect Heights," which is not unusual.
-
That's true and personally, I don't know that calling Linden, or Lenox, or the Flatbush--Ocean block of Woodruff "PLG" is all that awful (although plenty of PLG residents would disagree) but IMO Church Avenue is a real stretch.
Howdy, Stranger!
