nullBrooklyn Young Filmmakers is debuting its new online People’s Hollywood 411 Service Directory for Grassroots Filmmakers. Featured in the initial roll-out are profiles of neighborhood locations ready to work with low budget productions for a negotiable fee.

Online applications are available for businesses, artists, musicians, and crew members, who want to be included in the online Service Directory.

Available shooting locations include a casual dining restaurant with a backyard patio; a diner-style restaurant with a large industrial kitchen; a colorful and whimsical candy store; a charming clothing and accessories boutique with original designs; a large copy center; a hair salon that has easily stored beautician stations so the space can be converted into any kind of storefront business; and an empty high ceiling apartment with open availability for shooting.

These People’s Hollywood locations give grassroots film productions (projects under $10,000, most under $5,000) a new option for how to capture a simple slice of life moment or an extensive scene in a real world setting. Two of the locations are also ideal for cast parties and fundraising events.

People’s Hollywood 411 Service Directory is modeled on the www.ny411.com directory which serves big budget film productions. The People’s Hollywood Directory is geared towards the needs of grassroots film productions. Unlike ny411.com , the People’s Hollywood services are based in a community – Clinton Hill, 5 minutes’ walk from the largest film studio on the East Coast, the Steiner Studio in the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The development of a People’s Hollywood will enrich, educate, and involve the local community. The potential benefits to those listed in our directory include a new revenue stream and exposure for their locations, talents, or skills.

With an expanding film industry in our neighborhood there is a need for community based education to introduce residents to the types of jobs in film and the skills required. By creating a service hub for grassroots productions, Brooklyn Young Filmmakers will be able to generate hands-on internship placements for teens and adults who take our introductory classes and seminars.

Brooklyn Young Filmmakers offers its MAKE A FILM Class Series twice a year in collaboration with NYC College of Technology’s Division of Continuing Education. BYFC classes have produced ten short films since 2008, and have graduates who have gone on to paid film work or made their own films. BYFC now assists its graduates, and emerging professionals who have worked on BYFC films, with producing their own film projects by providing production assistants, consultants, and helping to secure shoot materials.
