663 Franklin Ave. next to Latino Sports Club, formerly a bodega/deli... news? — Brooklynian

663 Franklin Ave. next to Latino Sports Club, formerly a bodega/deli... news?

Looking for any info on the construction thats been visible for a couple months now at this corner spot on Franklin and St. Mark's. The back door was open this morning and I was abe to see kitchen sinks and machinery, and in front the gate was slightly ajar as workers were determining how to lay some brick for a new storefront design? I figure someone may have the early scoop on what's to come.

  • The realty firm CPEX is stating that it recently leased 663 Franklin Avenue to an entity named Lazy Ibis.

    Source: http://www.cpexre.com/assignments/completed?location=1&product_type=8

Here is the flyer that CPEX used to advertise the space: http://www.cpexre.com/system/assets/properties/documents/413/original/663_Franklin_Avenue_-_Setup.pdf?1342613801

$4000 a month was being asked for the space

A LLC named Lazy Ibis was recently formed, by someone who lives locally: http://legal-notice.org/llc-notice/ny/kings/2013/lazy-ibis-llc

  • I believe it's from the folks who run Little Zelda's so I would start there.

  • I'm shocked that the border patrol hasn't shrieked and frothed about moving this thread to the Crown Heights board.

  • Wow, the Little Zelda folks just opened Wedge *and* they're opening a new place? Ambitious...

  • Mishaps, that is not confirmed.

  • Found this photo from March 13th.

    Inside Lazy Ibis Construction

Not sure of Rhondon Bern's involvement, but it was also posted on the twitter page of Raphael Huggins, handle "bittaBARISTA".... detective mode ON!

  • smelled coffee roasting there the other day and they said it neighbors said it was going to be a coffee shop.

  • At one point in December/January/February I passed by and saw two men inside. One of them asked what I would like to see there. I didn't have an answer at the time so I asked how I could get in touch with him. He said his name was Mike and he owned Little Zelda.

Not sure if anything's changed since then.

  • Regardless of who ends up running this place, it is sounding as if it will be another coffee shop.

When it opens, I will add it to the coffeeshop deathwatch thread: http://www.brooklynian.com/forums/topic/the-coffee-shop-deathwatch-thread

Until then, I will post a picture of what an ibis looks like, in case readers are not aware:

  • well I stopped by this afternoon, and it will not be a coffee shop, although it will serve coffee. It will be more like a cafe, food etc. They seem very nice. July seems to be the target open date.

  • Excellent research tsarina! I wish them well!

  • Yes, good to hear! More of a "cafe" is a development we could certainly use.

  • Websites with more info are up!

Opening is said to be early July....

  • YES! I'm excited.

  • Still no work on the exterior. Is anyone else finding themselves falling into a cycle of extreme excitement for every new place, followed by a wave of apathy once it opens? File it under The Guilty Gentrifier (which would be a terrible/excellent name for a new bar)

  • Just remember, that if not enough people are excited, the new business will close just like the one before.

....Instead of Guilty Gentrifier, I would name my bar the Circle Of Life.

  • Needless to say, now that it is July 13, they have missed their goal of opening in "early July".

Has anyone talked to the workers, or peeked inside, to see whether it looks like they will be able to open before Aug 1?

  • They posted on their facebook pics of removing the awning, and finding pigeons nesting in there. They made the pigeons a new roost. For some reason.

  • I walked by Friday and a worker was talking to a local saying that she didn't know anything for sure about the operations and opening, but that she was on site through to August sometime?

  • Hmm, judging from the work necessary for construction of a new pigeon roost, maybe that ibis isn't so lazy after all.....

  • Looks like they're getting there. I'll predict August 25th, just for fun.

  • I suspect we are awaiting a DOH initial kitchen inspection.

Put me down for Friday August 30th.

    Branding:

  • Sept 10th: Clearly I was too optimistic.

...this place has not opened yet.

  • Sept 23:

Lazy Ibis is in the process of seeking support for a beer and wine lic from CB8.

....we might not be able to discuss Lazy Ibis on the coffee shop deathwatch thread!

  • They are expected to present their plan at the SLA & Sidewalk Café Review Committee on Monday, November 4, 2013 at 6:30 PM at CNR-Center Light Health Care Center, which is located at 727 Classon Avenue, Brooklyn, NY (between Park and Prospect Places).

  • Oct 27:

I'm hearing rumors that, in response to the "announcement" that Starbucks is coming to Franklin, this place will become a traditional restaurant.

I hope to confirm said rumor after the mtg on Nov 4th.

  • Today just after the Halloween Parade there were three Lazy Ibis people out front. They had a basket of candy for the kids and small bags of freshly roasted (2 hours ago) coffee beans for the adults. It was lovely and I for one can be bought by free, beautifully smelling coffee beans and friendly people. They also said they would be opening next week. Too bad I don't live closer.

    As per a friend:

The Lazy Ibis, new coffee shop on St Marks and Franklin, opened today, and is it gorgeous. The usual coffee drinks, coffee by the pound, and a very enticing selection of pastries, including lots of savory choices. I had a pear, cheddar, and pancetta biscuit that was amazing; this is high praise from me, as I am excessively proud of my own biscuit skills.

Opens at 7, will ultimately have evening hours. Open until 1 or 2 today. I really hope this place will stay in business.

  • Yes! I was pleasantly surprised to see a post on FB announcing it was breakfast time at the Lazy Ibis, and I can't wait to try it out!
