gal at Pacific and Franklin
Hello-
I'm so glad I found this message board. I need to decide ASAP whether or not to take a studio on Pacific at Franklin in CH. I have been to the area at night for the last few nights, and am sooo on the fence. I am -yup, you guessed it - white, also sort-of little and blonde- but not wimpy or dumb. (former Oakland CA resident)
My main concerns:
*the armory homeless shelter AND some sort of halfway house on the block? there seem to be a lot of men hanging around. several of the tenants have said they have had no problems, and i don't see anything about that block on this message board but i am still wondering.
*the walk late at night from the Franklin C across Atlantic to Pacific. Also the safety of the shuttle late at night.
*parking my car, and walking from my car.
*where are the people like me?? i have not seen anyone in my demographic walking around, and i know you must be there! white, black, asian, latino, whatever... there must be lots of recent post-grad students who need affordable housing and feel a little too old to be shacking up with 3 other adults.
i would love any advice, and am looking for reasons to think this is a good thing but want to make an informed, smart decision. thanks so much.

i wouldnt do it.

If my sister was thinking about moving there I would probably tell her not to.

I am in your demographic (and there are others around) and have lived around the corner, on Dean, for 6 years. I have never had any problems to/from the subway (I don't take the subway after 10 anywhere, I take cabs if needed) or on my block and in fact love my block and neighbors. I park my car with no problems. There is some amount of hanging out by the shelter, but I haven't had problems with anyone. In fact, I get a little annoyed/upset when people assume the neighborhood is unsafe--I have not found it to be. But you obviously have to feel comfortable yourself.

ooooooo nooo....my hopes are fleeing....

Steer wide and clear. Half of the dudes in that shelter are fresh out of jail and the general area is still a slum. Check back in about 10 years, after more of your demographic has done the hard work of improving the neighborhood.

I agree, let that one go. Try to get something closer to Eastern Parkway.

wow, thanks for your honesty. it is useful, if heartbreaking. isn't it sad that housing prices are so nuts that i am considering living with criminals just to have a place? how do people do it? i am at my wit's end...going on 3 weeks of searching and living out of a suitcase. any sense from anyone if the options would be better in a month or two?

Have you looked in PH? You might be able to find something stabilized?? Whats your budget? And how many rooms? I'll ask around...

what a nice offer, that is so cool of you.
i am looking to pay at most $900 with utilities included. i am trying to stay in the PH vicinity, but am totally priced out of there, and am priced out of CH, Clinton Hills and BSt too, from the looks of it! The studio I found is $850, rent controlled, beautiful and roomy, with a fantastic kind, landlord...and on the same block as the armory/shelter/halfway house. i have to decide by next wednesday when the current tenanats vacate. you see my quandry! if you know anyone who wants to "grandfather" me into their place...
what is the deal with that shelter and halfway house? i would imagine the repercussions of these buildings in the neighborhood might ripple out past the pacific/franklin block, for sure! -
if youre looking for safe but cheap and dont mind traveling try bensonhurst, graves end, mid wood, fort hamilton, kengsington tons of places
.
all names are probably misspelled

btw if you really really get desperate, i always could rent out my office for ya :P has a bathroom lol.

Miss Jaha also helped me find my apartment -- when I was kvetching here a few months back about the maddening futility of my aparmtent hunt at that point, she PM'd me about an opening in her building that hadn't come up in any of my searching. And now she's my upstairs neighbor. +1000 karma points for her! -

You, my friend, have just earned yourself some more applause!!!

My favorite half of a movie all time- the first half of The Princess Bride. -

It's refreshing to see someone commenting on this thread who actually lives in the area in question!
As someone who also lives in the area, I'm sick to death of folks projecting their negative stereotypes on other peoples' n'hoods.
I took a leap and moved to Crown Heights after 25 years in PS and I haven't looked back yet. Sure, it's a change but not at all what you might expect from reading all of these conjectures.
I live here with my two teenage sons and a middle aged wife and so far, after 4 years, the crime scene is actually no worse that Park Slope. Different, yes, but worse, no.
Forget about those bums hanging around the armory on Bedford. They are more a danger to themselves than anyone else.
At least that's been my experience. -
For what it's worth I have a friend who lives a couple doors down from the armory on Atlantic. He says he's never felt unsafe around the area, and he's a gay guy and not particularly brawny. But he says he has seen women being harassed by the guys there, and he insists on walking me to the bus stop if I'm ever over at his place late-ish at night. That may be more of a being-a-gentleman thing than a real safety worry, though.

people need to relax. if you're street smart, there's no problem. i live on franklin and st. mark's and regularly walk to/from the Franklin C stop or the 2/3/4/5 stop up to as late as 3am. usually after midnight i take the shuttle (which is ridiculously safe) just because i'm tired and know i'm not as alert. the worst i've ever experienced is catcalls (i am a young early-20s asian female)...which is pretty inevitable at any time of the day and happened to me all the time in the upper west side of manhattan too. obviously, don't live somewhere where you're not comfortable, but also don't automatically assume things about the people in the area.

Abbyc - thanks; I do agree with you. YOUR own attitude goes a long way when it comes to safety. If you assume everyone you encounter in a particular area is dangerous you're not exactly giving off a good vibe, especially if you're new to the 'hood. We're all people is my motto. Has served me very well my many years in this city and I've lived all over this place.
