constant sidewalk parties on st marks ave between grand and classon
Hi all, does anyone else live on st marks between grand and Classon and is getting as fed up as I am of the constant sidewalk parties? This is becoming unbearable. I have called the police many times and asked them to turn it down personally but it still happens constantly. Has anyone tried to do something else or have any ideas about what to do?

These so-called sidewalk parties are a fixture to that block. When it's hot inside, people tend to convene in front of their apartments. It may be loud, but again, it's a fixture for as long as I've been living in the neighborhood (seven years).

Are they during the day, or late into the night? There's code around quiet hours from 10pm to 7am I believe, and you and neighbors can consistently call 311 to complain if its truly excessive (e.g. blaring radios vs people just talking). It's also a sensitive line, especially if you're one of the newer neighbors and these folks have been there for many years doing this. Doesn't make it right, but you don't want to be targeted as the one who comes in and tries to change their ways. This is why I walked my block morning and evening before buying.

I have seen a lot fewer of these parties over the past decade.
Part of my theory is that the newer folks have the $ to drink in bars and restaurants, while the older folks tend to hang out in front of buildings.
It is a simplistic theory, but I think it partially explains it.

Hey fedupwithPH, maybe you should vacate the premises. The families there are really nice and the warmer it gets the louder the parties are going to be. You should probably go down and introduce yourself and talk to them. Possibly throw back a couple? Or would that not be a good look for you? Maybe the upper east side or possibly way more hip(ster) williamsburgh might be more suitable for your living situation.

Ah, summer has arrived...

Haha! This happens like clockwork every year. Some "new arrival" complains about noise and before long, someone emerges to defend "the locals" and predictably advise said "new arrival" to move to an area perceived as bland and boring.

I like the myth that everyone can simply choose where to live, as if living in CH, Williamsburg or the UES is a choice without consequence.

I can't believe this post has been up for three days and no one has pointed out that this block isn't in Prospect Heights.
Mod note: moved. Thx!

Mod note: moved. Thx!This is bound to be a bit of a shock to the OP, FedupwithPH considering the fact that his/her username indicates he/she believes he/she lives in Prospect Heights. FedupwithPH, what realtor did you use?
Noise/parties is the problem with renting an apartment in an unknown area during the cold months. If you stick around this site you will notice others come with the same complaint. Then they will be accused of being insensitive to the people who have been here longer and other cultures etc. etc. For the future or in advising friends who might move to Brooklyn, I suggest posing the question to we Brooklynian people as to just how loud any given block tends to be. In the meantime I would install your AC sooner than later for added noise pollution, or at least some loud whirring window fans.
