Cent'Anni restaurant, 742 Franklin (f/k/a Segetto (?)) — Brooklynian

Cent'Anni restaurant, 742 Franklin (f/k/a Segetto (?))

just walked by the previously-made-of-unobtanium storefronts, one of which became Pearl Indian.. and looks like the other is about to become an Italian restaurant.

this all feels a lot like smith st. ca 1998.

  • yup. It is supposed to be a sit down Italian place.

We did a little jabbering about it back when it was for rent here: http://www.brooklynian.com/forums/topic/store-next-to-pinetree-on-franklin

Since then, they have requested a full liq lic under the name Senza Fame, LLC. Please note, the entity is not required to call itself "Senza Fame".

The application is presently in pending status:

  • The new windows / storefront look really good. Looks like they just painted the bricks and awning space black, but it makes the storefront pop. Anyone have info on when they're looking to open?

  • Thier liquor license became effective today, June 6, 2013.

Note the NYS SLA states their trade name will be:

    CENT'ANNI

NYS SLA licenses and/or NYC DOH kitchen inspections are often the last obstacles a business has to overcome.

However, I haven't seen evidence of a DOH visit yet:

    http://nychealthratings.com/nycrestapp/browse/3/Crown Heights

...so, it still could be a little while.

  • Peeked in the other night, the awning was rolled out and there were people inside, lots of candles lit, looked gorgeous.

Probably they're pretty close to opening, once the DOH visits.

  • UPDATE: Retro hand-painted signage is up, and construction guy said they're opening on Monday!

  • Nice! We knew we were close!

  • Opened as planned, June 17, 2013.

  • menu looks awesome! I regret that I have only 1 stomach to fill for this restaurant!

  • Where's the menu?

  • I don't think it is online yet, but I have heard from 2 friends who went last night that they liked the food.

  • Is this the Prospect Heights restaurant that the owners of the Williamsburg restaurants Dumont and Dressler were referring to when they posted this to their website?

"We close the doors to one of NYC’s most beautiful dining rooms with mixed emotions. We are so proud of Dressler. It was a pioneer in the Brooklyn Dining scene that helped set the standard for dining in the borough today. We are excited to continue serving the Williamsburg Community at both Dumont and Dumont Burger as well as our new ventures in Clinton Hill and Prospect Heights."

There also appears to be a restaurant opening up on Vanderbilt Avenue between Park and Prospect. Any info?

  • When I looked at the SLA site, the Centanni owners and the Dressler/Dumont owners don't seem to be the same folks.

I started a thread in PH to do a little fishing to see if we can get any info about the space at 659: http://brooklynian.com/forum/prospect-heights/something-is-happening-at-659-vanderbilt-ave-the-old-forest-floor-space

  • Moderator Change title of this thread to Cent'Anni. Ate there last night. Wonderful interior. They were slammed with many diners and as they just opened on monday, things were not as smooth as they could have been. Had White bean Crostini (delightful) Black Kale Ceasar Salad. (Needs more dressing) and penne a la vodka. Nice sauce but couldn't taste or find the prosciutto. Oh and a delightful bottle of wine (whine) . I wished the flavors weren't so muted. Great looking backyard to dine in. will have to try it again.

  • Ms Whynot and I just finished a meal here.

The food and service was good, it is clear the owners have experience and hired experienced staff.

The inside and outside dining areas both filled at 9:15 PM on a lovely Saturday night, and there is more seating outside than in .. making me wonder if they will have enough seating inside as the weather gets cool in the fall.

A solid addition to Franklin's expanding scene. Locals walked here, this is not a "destination" restaurant.

  • We also ate here tonight. Was relatively empty inside until the rain started, and we (and everybody else) moved in. A bit noisy and cheek-to-jowl inside but, this is Brooklyn, right?

Food was uniformly solid. One of the side veggies was absolutely great. Fair prices. Will probably become a madhouse on Thurs/Fri/Sat-- good for them!

all in all glad to have the restaurant in the 'hood.

  • We ate there last week. We found the food to not be overly remarkable, but the prices weren't that high either. The drinks were expensive, but that's just the way of things.

  • solid food at good prices. great outdoor space. gluten free penne! decent service.

    good spot.

  • We went last night. They've done an excellent job getting up and running. It was hard to tell how recently they've opened.

We enjoyed the crostini. The fennel salad was lacking in cheese. The skirt steak was excellent, perfectly prepared and served with a generous side of shaved parmesan-topped arugula with a light lemon olive oil dressing.

The cocktail was a bit disappointing. I had the Jalapeno, which is supposed to be a tequila cucumber jalapeno thing, but it tasted like it had margarita mix in it. Also the waitress, who was very nice, did not seem to get that you never leave a patron waiting for a drink.

We'd go back again, which is not true for most restaurants we visit.

  • My husband and I visited Centanni for the first time two Friday nights ago. The garden was hopping, but since it was really hot we sat inside and enjoyed the air conditioning. Our table was located under a 300+ year old figurehead that was on a frigate, which was really cool.

To start we got the special mozzarella di buffalo with tomatoes and basil, and it was the best mozzarella de buffala that I have ever had (sorry grandma, yours is too curdy!) The portion was huge, probably meant for 4 people to split, and cost $12. We ended up taking half of it home, and I had it for lunch the next day.

For dinner we each got pasta dishes, which were also huge. I got the pappardelle with wild boar ragu and my husband got gnocchi with a wild mushroom sauce (both were either $12 or $14, I can't remember). Both pastas were delicious, and we ended up taking half of them home to eat for lunch the next week at work. If you are a frequent eater-outer on a budget, probably a smart thing to do is to split the appetizer and split a pasta with someone else, which would make Centanni a fairly inexpensive weekly go-to spot. Wine by the glass was a good price, as well, and the meal came with delicious bread that we used to sop up the great sauces.

Our waitress was friendly and fantastic, and seemed very excited to be able to work close to where she lived. She was very attentive and staged the meal well, with enough time in between the appetizer and main course so that you could relax a bit. The manager was on-site and told us all about the rustic restaurant decor and seemed very nice. The bar was really beautiful and seemd to have a nice crowd of people enjoying snacks, drinks and conversation. The bathrooms were large and lovely.

I will definitely be going back to Centanni. It is like Bar Corvo, but with many more food options and *slightly* lower price points, and I bet the garden will be a huge asset to the restaurant. If Centanni maintains its really high quality of service, I think it will be one of the best restaurants in the neighborhood. I am thrilled to have a great, high-quality, but unpretentious Italian restaurant on Franklin Ave. I wish them much success!

  • Finally checked Cent'Anni out last night and was really impressed. Nice low-lit rustic feel, and the staff was attentive and really personable. I got the polpetini (veal meatballs) appetizer, and the rigatoni dinner (I think it's their signature dish, so I had to go for it). Both were great. The portions were generous, too. The free bread and olive oil (which had olives in it) were really fresh and acted as an awesome sauce mop. Their tomato sauce is awesome -- very homemade-tasting. I'm not picky about how pasta is cooked, but the rigatoni was al dente which I think worked perfectly for the dish. It held the sauce well, and the plate itself had good sized pieces of meatball and Italian sausage -- even more than I was expecting.

The only thing I missed was some parm cheese, but that's my fault for not asking (I'm used to being asked if I want it at Italian spots, and didn't even think of it until I was almost done eating).

Bill with tip came out to $25, which I wouldn't normally spend on a meal for one, but it's solid, real food in a nice atmosphere, so I didn't mind. Not something to do every day, but I'll definitely be back.

  • Sept 8: This place is now consistently full, and receiving good reviews on sites like Yelp.

    http://www.yelp.com/biz/centanni-brooklyn

...which is good, because they will have even more competition soon.

  • Who's the competition? The place coming on classon?

Either way it's a great space, service, and food. Competitors beware
