  • I didn't notice this one. I'm just waiting for the day that we can get rid of the FCC Line Charge or whatever they're calling it now.

Most people, including some Verizon busines people that I've talked to, think this is a fee charged by the FCC. In fact it is a fee mandated by the FCC but all the money goes to Verizon "to offset the cost of connecting to the long distance network" Thank you Judge Greene.....not.

OMG I just sent a letter to Public Service Commission because I thought it was totally unfair. I have 3 phones on my family plan and we were charged over $10 for it. When I asked what is this for they said at first it was taxes. I told them no it is not listed on the taxes section of my bill. Then he said oh that is a fee Verizon charges to offset costs? I asked him which costs? He said they were providing excellent customer service to which I said I have a hard time trying to get a human on teh phone how is that good customer services? Then he said that was a fee they were charging so they can sell the cell phones at a discount. But if you add it up - I am paying $7.00 alone for my phone on a 2 year plan. So 7 times 24 is $168. My phone was $99.00 originally $195.00. I asked how are you saving me money? If anything I am paying more than you advertise - he could not answer and admitted I was right. I then spoke to a supervisor and informed them that I think this is the bait and switch approach to cell phones or at least false advertising. He said there was nothing he could do so I lodged a complaint with Verizon as well as with the Public Service Commission

Mr Verizon says, "we will now be charging that same fee because we think that it's a great way to increase our profits without you noticing."

Okay, so it's not a real quote... but it's the thought that counts, right?!
  • It's really unbelievable b/c it was the phone companies that were lobbying so aggressively to have that phone tax repealed, and in their statements they complained time and again about the "undue costs to consumers".
  • wait guys and gals. just to be clear. this fee is for DSL service

  • When I finally ported my business phone from Verizon I kept getting bills, long after my service was disconnnected. Calls to Verizon could not explain how I was getting bills for service I didn't have.

That company is a snake in the grass.
  • Back when MCI existed, I once cancelled my service with them and continued to receive bills for two years.
  • personally, i love how my unlimited everything long distance plan, which costs $39 per month, cost me $60 a month. taxes/fees/yadda yadda.
  • To be fair, that tax was originally imposed in the late 1800s to fund the Spanish-American war, and it took the government over 100 years to get rid of it. So the fact that Verizon only took a few weeks is downright saintly in comparison.

I had asked the FCC regarding this, among other Verizon fees, and they said they do not mandate any fees.
Phone companies call it that so people think its a government thing, but is simply just another Verizon fee.

Sorry I missspoke. The FCC line charge was not mandated by the FCC. It was mandated by Judge Greene as part of the divestiture of AT&T and it does go to the local Telco

But hen I think the OP was commenting on the recent recinding of the federal excise tax on some services. As I understand it this tax was originally on long distance and varied by the time ans distance of the call. since many services now include all local and long distance at one set fee it was no longetr apllicable.

Here's how to read your bill and charges:
