Lula Bagel Opens on July 1! — Brooklynian

Lula Bagel Opens on July 1!

I have it on good authority that Lula Bagel on Nostrand Ave and Lincoln Place will open at 7am on Monday, July 1. Here's hoping that it is really good!

  • If it's not good this will be the let down of the century. But I have faith!

  • It will be good!

I used to live by their Williamsburg location (Lula Bean). Good coffee, bagels that go beyond your basics and friendly owners. Apparently they will be selling fresh breads as well.

  • Walked by this morning, but didn't get a chance to stop in. The place is fully stocked with tons of bagels, so someone please patronize and let us know about your experience.

  • I stopped in this morning at around 8:45am and it was fantastic. The staff was very friendly and courteous, the space was pleasant and inviting, and the iced coffee was just what I needed. Prices look to be fairly reasonable, something like $4.50 for a whitefish salad bagel sandwich (!) and $2.25 for a 16oz cold brewed fancy iced coffee. People were sitting in the table section and at the coffee bar. I am thrilled to welcome them to the neighborhood and I wish them great success.

  • yes, I patronized Lula as well this morning. The place was packed and the bagels were delicious. The owner did a great job on the interior - it's a great place to sit down and enjoy a schmear on a bagel!

  • Ditto. I went before noon and the selection is very nice. Had a onion bagel with cream cheese, lox, red onion, capers and dill. The actual shop is cool and hopefully is reflective of great things to come on Nostrand Avenue.

  • Tsarina, what did you think of the onion bagel? That's my favorite bagel so I'm very interested in your thoughts on it! :-)

  • well they dont bake it there, but they did toast it, but i walked down to st. marks with it , so it was no longer warm.and i had alot of stuff on it that i was paying attention to (especially capers) so the bagel didnt stand out so much. but it was not bad. Oh how I wish Whynot was here to comment and provide a chart or reference....

  • Hmm, that's a little disappointing tsarina. If you don't mind my asking but how much did your bagel sandwich cost?

  • OH YEAH. It's nice to not have to walk to Franklin for a bagel. #firstworldproblems

  • My sandwich cost $6.50. It was nice. I especially like the fact that they have whitefish salad and other spreads. It is nice not to have to walk to Franklin to get a bagel that is not days old and not very good. And soon we will have freshly baked bagels on st. marks and franklin which will really send all us first worlders into a tizzy!! What can I say, I am a foodie, and there is not a whole lot of diversity or quality on Nostrand to interest me. Bring it on!

  • news FLASH! Blue Sky muffins available at Lula. Had the whitefish salad on everything bagel and ate in store today. I great cross section of the whole neighborhood came thru with children etc. Very nice! Chatted with friends I hadn't seen. This is truly a very nice addition to Nostrand Avd.

  • The place is much too small to be making bagels. Lets be realistic folks. Also, I think I'd rather have delicious fresh bagels imported from a couple of miles away than mediocre bagels made on site.

So far I'm very impressed from the iced coffee to the espresso, white fish salad, bagels, grilled sandwiches, etc!

  • because I am odd, I will point out that this thread celebrating it's opening, follows this thread about the anticipation:

  • Nice. I was here today for the third time. I've gotten two sandwiches and they were awesome but pricey.

They don't carry bacon, sausage or egg, I'm assuming for religious reasons, but I'm keeping my eye on that other bagel store opening on Nostrand near Atlantic.

Connecticut Muffin's egg sandwiches don't quite cut it.

  • OMG, no egg sandwiches?!! That's crazy.

  • The fact that the breads are baked off site, and that there is no griddle, likely allowed the owner to save thousands on things like venting, which would have been required.

It also may have allowed him to secure a space from a landlord which may not have wanted such an intensive use.

  • I do not believe there are any religious reason. Egg sandwiches are available in any bodega.

  • They have two ham sandwiches on the menu. The no egg or bacon thing is not for religious reasons. The owner said that egg sandwiches are coming after they get their feet on the ground, and yes, with bacon.

  • cool, good to know. I was most excited to have them near for egg sandwiches in the morning!

  • I rate these bagels as being better than Cafe Allegria's (on Franklin).

They are about equal to those at Olde Bagel Shop on Vanderbilt.

  • I haven't had any bagels but I was a little disappointed with how weak the iced coffee was when I tried it. In my experience you're supposed to make iced coffee stronger to compensate for the water added by the ice. It also justifies the often higher price than comparable for amount of coffee in the cup minus all the ice. (Something like $3.50 for a large.) The experience has put me off bothering to try other coffee options. It's so close by I figured we would sometimes just go get a coffee instead of always making it at home. But no.

  • There must be something seriously wrong with my palate because I'll take a $1.50 bodega iced coffee over a $3.50/$4.00 "fancy" iced coffee anyday
