Summer 2013: Beating the heat.
Ms Whynot, the dog and I have decided that best way to beat today's heat, is to stay inside, in the air conditioning. As a result, we have been debating the following issue, and seek your assistance.
The room is approximately 14' x 14', with 9' ceilings. There is a slightly underpowered 5000 BTU A/C and a ceiling fan. All windows and doors are closed.
Here's the debate:
Ms Whynot believes that operating the A/C on max, and running the ceiling fan on its highest setting creates the greatest sensation of cool, because the air must not only be cool, but must blow against your body for maximum cooling of the skin.
I disagree. I believe that the advatages she points out of running the fan are overcome by the fact that hot air rises, and the fan is mixing the evil hot air that has accumulated near the ceiling, with the precious, good, low lying, cool air produced by the A/C. Without the fan on, I believe more of this air would inhabit the lower 5'8" of the room, the area presently in use by her, the dog and I.
Your opinion or expertise is sought.

Iceland is not an option.
On Facebook, some have asked if the fan is set correctly for summer (counter clockwise). The answer is yes.

Ms. Whynot wins a free drink, and by default you win too. Ceiling fans have two settings. One setting brings the hot air down to maximize winter comfort. The other setting swirls the cool air up to maximize the effect of the ac.

My former roomates and I used to take turns sticking our heads in the freezer for a few minutes. It really helped! Have you checked for drafts?
-
We are regularly checking the drafts at nearby bars. The Summer Ales are quite good.
