What E.R. do you go to? — Brooklynian

What E.R. do you go to?

I have, on various occasions, had reason to visit the e.r. over the last couple of years (several generations of my family live in walking distance so, it's been for older people, babies, etc..).

In Brooklyn we've always gone to LICH on Atlantic and have actually had decent experiences. I grew up here so have been to a lot of hospitals in the city for myself, friends, etc.. and considering how terrible ERs can be (I'm looking at you Roosevelt, Beth Israel, Lutheran..), we've found LICH to be pretty great.

So where do we go when it closes if we need to go to an ER? Curious about where people go in Brooklyn..

  • I've been curious about this. I haven't had to go the ER room in Brooklyn yet, knocks on wood, but where should I go? I've heard horrible things about Kings County and slightly not as bad things about Interfaith. I don't know anything about The Brooklyn Hospital Center or Methodist.

  • Our neighbor had a good experience at Methodist's ER.

Those Premier Care places (one on 5th Ave in Park Slope, and another opening on Flatbush at some point) are good urgent care centers. They are open fairly late (I think 9pm) and can do x-rays. Also, we've been seen really fast when we went.

  • When I used to have kidney stones, I visited Methodist. It was never super busy, and the pain killers were quite good.

If I am ever shot, I want to go to Kings County. I hear they are the best.

  • If at all possible, avoid ERs and go to urgent care centers. You will be seen sooner and treated more humanely.

I've been to Methodist ER and it sucked - very understaffed, long waits (yes, even for more serious stuff), and rude staff.

If you ever get shot or stabbed, Kings County is the place to go - world class trauma center. Otherwise, steer wide and clear.

  • Do not go to Methodist! When I got stitches there, my primary care doc asked me if I did it myself. My husband was there a few weeks ago with a broken ankle. And besides the mean staff, they made him walk on incorrectly sized crutches about 40 feet to the exit door while on percoset on morphine. It was a terrible experience!

  • I heard there was a new urgent care center opening up on Flatbush somewhere in the Sterling/Park block.

Does Long Island Hospital (I think that's the name, the hospital over in Fort Greene) have an ER?

  • BKChickie, the urgent care place opening on Flatbush is another Premier Care, which is what's on 5th Ave and 8th St in Park Slope.

  • I'm pretty sure she means the one afffiliated with Long Island UNIVERSITY which actually goes by Brooklyn Hospital Center (It's right next to Fort Green Park on Dekalb).

    From their website:

The Brooklyn Hospital Center is a Level II trauma center, equipped to provide comprehensive emergency medical services to patients suffering traumatic injuries. With over 60,000 visits to our Emergency Department ever year—including 20,000 visits to our dedicated Pediatric Section—we stand ready to serve you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

  • Brooklyn Hospital Center seems kind of small. Maybe it's just me but 60,000 visits to the ER rooms is very small for any built up urban area let alone Brooklyn.

  • " I've heard horrible things about Kings County"

I know kings county got some bad press in the past but its not a reflection of their ER department.

As a matter of fact, Kings county has one of the best ER's in the city. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for their other departments. Its a level 1 ER that accepts some of the worse ER cases and has attracted some of the best doctors.

......but like I said, their other departments are not as good.

I think I would chose an ER based on what I needed. If I had a serious trauma injury, I would head to Kings County. If I just needed stitches, the I would choose Brooklyn Hospital Center (if it were outside of the hours of one of those urgent care places) or Methodist.

  • Only two reasons to go to Kings County. First, because you've got a serious traumatic injury (car accident, gunshot, lost limb, etc). Second because you have a serious psychiatric issue (they are second only to Bellevue among public hospitals in the city).

    Anything else, go somewhere else.
