What's Bed-Stuy like?

Heh. Roughly 1/3 of my physical mail is from local brokers looking to get me to list my house. They also constantly leave postcards on my stoop. I get more of those than menus.

New York is still on my mind as well as Brooklyn or Queens these days.

Bed Stuy is on the minds of so many that its lowest tier of tenants is being gentrified into the shelter system.

It is simultaneously an indicator of our city's failures and successes. And has occurred, in one form or another, since the beginning of time.

You mean there are other places to live besides Brooklyn? I thought that was an old wives' tale.
There may be other places to live but Brooklyn {King's County} is the closest thing to Heaven!

lots of conflict between the newbies and the long term residents, much of it based on hue and wealth:

A long, but in my opinion good, read from New York magazine about the recent history, nature of community, and complexities of gentrification in Bed-Stuy through the lens of one block: Jefferson between Lewis and Stuyvesant. http://nymag.com/nymetro/realestate/neighborhoods/features/11775/

^A good read, indeed^
-
That article is pretty old... I came across it just prior to buying my house on Jefferson like a year and a half to two years ago.
-
It is good to do such research before buying, so you know what kind of welcome may be conferred by some members of the community.

Read the sticky on the Tompkins House cat killer and welcome to the neighborhood

Many Bed Stuy residents are worried about not being able to afford where they live.http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/bed-stuy-unhappy-worried-affordable-housing-new-report-reveals-article-1.1608894
