Karma? Did I miss something?

What is this Karma thing and why does mine say -1? Did I miss posting for a few days and some D&D geeks took over the message board?

  • Wow, I just did a search and read the thread on Karma. I have to say, this is the most doushe thing I've seen on this board. What's next, everyone moving all postings to Myspace?

This board is getting lame fast. I don't need some childish rating system with someone giving me negative or positve (negative in my case apparently) ratings. I can't even see who rated me or why.

this is retarded and so very high school.

I'm gonna go peg my pants now, and wait for some more negative karma points. If you don't like my posts, please people, have the balls to tell me so.
  • Shoot Dave, I always thought you was ok.

You've just been smoted. Don't expect any birthday invitations either, buddy!
  • i haven't made up my mind about this karma thing
if you've got positive karma. it's great :D
when your karma dips into the negative side, it sucks :(

perhaps it would be more honest if you could see a history
    of who has praised/smiten you?

or would that go completely against the whole karma thing?

Agreed. For one, yes, this board is getting very lame and very tired, fast.
As for the rating system, isn't the "rate this post" feature enough? wtf guys?! Like we don't have enough negative energy in the world....

It's far more worse than when you jugheads veer completely off topic.
This is supposed to be a "message board" for PARK SLOPE.

    Trixie has left the building.....

  • trixieNYC wrote: For one, yes, this board is getting very lame and very tired, fast.
If it is, I don't think that it has anything to do with the karma or any of the board's other 'features.' The content is the most important thing, and that's all user-generated.

and like I dont know your lame ass is giving me negative karma as we type
    Grow up.
    really, grow up.

again, this is a MESSAGE BOARD for Park Slope, is it not?
  • Since I posted on that other Board (I think they call it Prospect Heights) comments similar and identical to both kosherdave and trixienyc - I just want to affirm their comments on this Board (although by doing so I will probably earn them and me more bad karma points).

The system of awarding or taking away "karma" points is the very definition of sophomoric - and since we are governed by the "Gang of 5" any pretense of democarcy has permanently been eroded. They will do what pleases them and that's that.

I came on this Board 10 months ago to do research for a screenplay I'm writing about the virtual characters that inhabit community bulletin boards. This most recent episode in the continually fascinating life of these boards provides me with a wealth of material I would have not thought possible.

There is a central belief system at the core of all community forums - if you deviate from that central core you are usually punished in some way or form. For instance - having a thought contrary to that held by the anti-AY cabal. Argue against them and get bad karma points. Very much like people were treated in high school right. In fact maybe this board and others like it is the ultimate revenge of the nerds.

I do live in this community and will continue to frequent these Boards and will also continue to act in the self satisfying agent provocateur mode. Why else spend time here? None of you actually take this seriously do you? I mean do you?

I do really like food recommendations though.

Uh, actually, I didn't. And if you think that it's so lame, why are you putting enough stock in it to get you bent out of shape? Chillax, Trix!

I had a great (and somewhat loony) social studies teacher in high school. One of his favorite lines was, "in social studies, when you're OFF the subject, you're ON the subject!"

    We have a winner!!! =D>

(although many of the statements in your post run a bit contrary to the one that I've quoted)

Did you run out of fingers? Dude, look at the other hand!

Okay, okay. I deserve the smite for that one...
  • I hate it too. So smite me.

and, as far as I know, this isnt social studies, its a neighborhood message board. I initally came here to find out more about the neighborhood I just moved into...restaurants, shops, issues relative to the neigh-bor-hood, crime or lack of, etc. capice?
  • Do people take the karma addition seriously? And if so why? I think it's pretty humorous.
  • wow I'm a bit disappointed that I've only picked up one extra negative karma point for this post. Let's go people, I'm pretty sure that I can get taht up to negative 5 before I go take my final exams today after recess.

As for Livetotravel researching for the screenplay, that sounds kinda cool (please, no positive karma points for that, I need to stay negative). My only request is that if you use me as a character, I will be played by either a midget, or Oprah. Or, if there is a midget that LOOKS like Oprah, they would be preferential.

wow. the irony in this post is like.... ironic :)

go. ahead. smite my day :D/

That's outta my hands but I'm certain they are leaning toward . . .

I think it's a pussy way of disagreeing with someone, with no other reason than to intentially hurt their feelings (if they are sensitive about that sort of thing). In the big kids sandbox, when you don't like what someone says (or in this case types) you just tell them. I mean, perhaps we should make a rule that you can only respond to posts with karma ratings. The only thing this does is piss people off who like to use this board. I mean, shit, I got a neg point from someone for starting this post. So I'm being negatively rewarded for voicing my opinion. fucking lame if you ask me, but I suppose the tone of this board is really heading in the direction of "no one asked you" Afterall, it's a community forum, no?
To me, I guess creating a middle school drama rating system is about as lame as people's responses to the Lost Boy's Hat postings! Juuuuust another reason for people in other hoods to laugh at us.
  • Idlewild wrote: Do people take the karma addition seriously? And if so why? I think it's pretty humorous.
    apparently so O:)

i'm building a web site about a screenwriter who spends his day
researching community bulletin boards. the bulletin board will be played by PhpBB

Brilliant - after all, anything that is open source is ultimately democratic
  • I think you folks are taking this karma thing way too seriously. But hey, if it gets people this excited whether they are in favor or dis-favor of it then maybe it should be smoted. Although the debate does make interesting reading.

I thought that the virtues of the karma feature WAS the topic of this thread?

    Mi dispiace, ma non capisco.
You're getting off subject here (), but... Even if your neighbors are talking about something going on someplace else, doesn't it still say something about your neighborhood? Namely the thoughts, feelings, interests and backgrounds of your neighbors? I think that that's pretty important and central to the neighborhood.
Idlewild wrote: Do people take the karma addition seriously? And if so why? I think it's pretty humorous.
I do, too. I don't really give a rip about the running tally (whether I'm positive or negative), but I think that it's amusing and interesting to see the point swings that you get as you're posting - it was VERY amusing that I took karma hits as I addressed a group of people voicing their 'this karma thing is lame' opinion. I mean, it's possible that someone other than their number smote me, but how likely is it?

you put way too much time and effort into this.
    that's sad.
  • ugh, i am not liking the karma thing. why? because i get smited for having an unpopular opinion. in the real world, it's called speaking your mind. on the board it's bad karma.

i'm sure i'll get ripped for this one, but what the hell.... once more with feeling.
  • trixieNYC wrote: you put way too much time and effort into this.

 You're funny in an unintentional (I think) way! If that was meant to be intentionally funny, more props to ya!

I'm sure that some people are smiting based on whether or not your opinion jives with theirs, but I would hope that more people are voting based on how useful or constructive your statement is. A tool is what you do with it - Maxwell's silver hammer can drive nails as easily as it can come down on someone's head.

Why slam D&D geeks? That's not very nice.

Okay, okay. I deserve the smite for that one...

Live to Travel - I'm completely with you on the "gang of 5" quote.

This karma thing is stupid. It's a pussy-ass way of disagreeing with somebody. Have the nerve to just call somebody out on their bullshit or their attitude if you don't like it.

I, too, came here for knowledge about the 'hood and (although I admit guilt from time-to-time) the hijacking of threads into silly comments has become very old, very fast.
  • I have to tell you, after reading the karma rules post in the PH section and this post, seeing how people are berating the karma system, defending the system and explaining the system, I'm laughing pretty hard. I thought the politics at the PS Coop were insane, you people are nuts! I'm tearing here.....
  • this karma thing is good as long as one's karma accurately fluctuates relative to the vaue of one's posts

–in the end this is not real life

    "shall we play a game?"
  • I highly suspect faster-than-allowed-for-regular-posters ratings by the moderators (even the "rules" verifies this), which means it's only a reflection of how THEY view you. That's pretty pathetic.
