Homeless woman wandering around Franklin Av. for 2 weeks — Brooklynian

Homeless woman wandering around Franklin Av. for 2 weeks

Hi neighbors. I'm sure many of you have noticed the homeless woman wandering up and down Franklin Av. (mostly between Lincoln and St. John's), day and night for the past 2 weeks. She sometimes sits in the laundromat next to Dutch Boy or on the bus stop bench outside.

She's wearing a dirty orange tank top (sometimes with a beige hoodie) and black sweatpants. She mutters to herself, sometimes yelling out loud, but doesn't seem to be aggressive toward people. She's usually smoking a cigarette and I've seen a few people give her food or coffee.

I've wondered if I should call some authority to take her to a shelter? I have no idea how this works (she may not even want to go). Any feedback or advice? I'd like to help her, if possible.

  • NYC runs Street Outreach Teams

    http://www.nyc.gov/html/dhs/html/outreach/outreach.shtml

    They are accessible via 311.

Based on your call, they will try to locate her and offer her shelter/care.

She is under no obligation to accept the offer unless she is deemed to be at imminent risk to herself.

In such situations, they will involve their supervisors to see if 9.58 applies:

  • Do they actually get them into shelters and follow up on the calls? I've always been skeptical.

  • Most homeless are already known to the outreach workers, whom are required to try to contact clients within 2 Hours.

Contacts with clients are recorded in DHS CARES. DHS will cite the provider if they can't demonstrate compliance and diligence.

  • Thanks for the tip(s), whynot! I will call 311 later today.

  • That's really kind of you to be so concerned. I've also wanted to help when I see a homeless person, but rather than to call 311, maybe you can ask the woman if she wants to go to a shelter and let her decide. I was a case manager for many years and let me tell you the shelters in NYC are absolutely horrific. In some ways they're worse than the prisons or at least, very similar. Many people choose to sleep in parks/on subway because it's much safer. Drug deals, robberies, fights (including people who were recently released from prison for drugs/murder/rape, etc) and many times the staff look the other way. Also, I've seen clients treated really poorly by staff who were incredibly unprofessional, and I witnessed several employees belittling and provoking clients. This wasn't one or two incidents, but on numerous occasions.

I know you have a sincere desire to help, but maybe letting her decide if she wants to go to a shelter is a better option.

  • I believe that woman is Huma Albedin and she's having some marital difficulties with her husband, Anthony Weiner. Approach with supreme caution.

  • I'd ask her directly if she needs help, but my husband saw her screaming at people a few times and, truth be told, I'm a bit wary of approaching her.

I didn't see her around this morning when I left for work, so perhaps she has moved on to greener pastures?

If it were Huma Abedin, I'd invite her to stay with us but only if she promises to bring Bill Clinton to dinner. Hillary can come, too.

  • This woman is Effin Crazy! You don't approach her and for goodness sake dumb ass kids Stop buying her coffee and giving her money because of your white guilt! She is crazy and needs help and a shower and a change of clothes would help as well. I am sick of seeing her stalking up and down and camping on that stupid loitering bench outside of Dutch Boy. Oh and Breuklyn, Dutch Boy, tattoo place maybe you guys collectively should contact the authorities or local politicians about removing her it cant be helping your business having this freak outside your windows. If I sound angry it's because I am. I yelled at her on Tuesday when she was about to take a dump across the street from where I live in the middle of the day. If you don't think she poses a threat or is dangerous I am sure thats what the lady on train a month back thought about her assailant before being stabbed, or the person who gets shoved on the subway track or hit over the head by a rock. The culprit is never sane people. I have called 311 and I guess they cant do anything if she is minding her own business. And the twenty something rookie cops are probably afraid of her. But if you ever see her doing anything wrong or threatening then please call 311. Get her out of here!!!
