A Final Cheers to Jackie’s 5th Amendment — Brooklynian

A Final Cheers to Jackie’s 5th Amendment

Natalia writes on Daily Slope:

The closing of Jackie’s 5th Amendment is its own personification of the battle between what we now view as ‘old New York’ and ‘new New York’. Whatever those are exactly ... The joint is famous for attempting to secede from the neighborhood last year ... It is a quintessential dive bar, complete with a ten dollar bucket of six beers, an electric jukebox spouting anything from Johnny Cash to Nickelback, red lights shedding an eerie 80’s glow, and a glorious faded sign stating “No Smoking Behind the Bar”.

After chatting with the bartender, she confirmed that it was indeed set to close on September 14th ... People have been coming for years, and for them, this isn’t just the loss of their favorite drinking spot, it’s the loss of a Friday night hangout with friends – including the bartenders.

  • I plan on going for a last hurrah. If any brooklynians are interested in joining, by all means PM or Post. No date set yet, maybe next week on thursday.

  • Terrible. What's the circumstances behind the closure? I've never been but love all of the long time establishments in the Slope. I hope some trendy, kitschy little hipster bar doesn't open in its place.

  • Jackie's 5th Amendment bar in Park Slope will close, disappointing old-timers, hipsters and anyone who enjoys a 9 a.m. drink.[i]

Another classic old man bar in Park Slope is giving up the ghost.

Jackie’s 5th Amendment, a decades-old watering hole, will be selling its last bucket of small beers next month.

"A lot of the old timers are pretty upset," said bartender Tony Ferrara. "They all said they are going to be buying a six pack and staying home to drink."

Becky, a bartender at Jackie's 5th Amendment bar in Park Slope, serves up another round. The bar will close in September, disappointing old-timers, hipsters and anyone who enjoys a 9 a.m. drink.

The bar’s elderly owner, Harold Costello, has become ill, and no one in his family wants to take over the dive spot on the corner of Fifth Ave. and Seventh St. in the ever-tony neighborhood.

The bar has fought hard to keep its working class persona despite the gentrifying area. And regulars appreciate the effort — in the form of ice-filled buckets of six seven-ounce “ponies” for $10.

The bar is also famous for its early morning happy hour to serve residents who work the night shift. Or people who just want to drink the hard stuff instead of eating eggs over easy.

Jackie's 5th Amendment has been at Fifth Ave. and Seventh St. for decades.

But it's not rising rents that are forcing the cornerstone to shutter.

The bar is being sold to the pharmacy next door, according to L Magazine, which first reported the closing set for Sept. 14.

Last year, the bar fought to secede from Park Slope, but more recently began to embrace its hoity toity surroundings by hosting literary readings.

But its mostly older bartenders haven’t changed much.

“In some ways it is refreshing, especially for being a dark, drunk den,” said Christine G. in an online post on Yelp. “It gives Park Slope some edge at least. I've never seen a baby in this bar so it must be something.”

  • I've been to Jackie's and it has good and bad qualities.

Good: A killer juke-box, not busy so you can order easily and play darts without bother

Bad: Seriously skanky bathroom, not good beer selection, place stunk of bleach and vomit and had sawdust on the floor to clean up the vomit. Yeah it was so bad the bleach didn't even kill the smell.

But it is one great juke-box
