Bill DeBlasio? — Brooklynian

Bill DeBlasio?

edited November -1 in Brooklyn Politics

Bill DeBlasio represented Park Slope for eight years in the City Council. Can anyone tell me some of the biggest changes he was responsible for making during that time?

  • I really got nothing.

  • Well, I’m checking this thread three days after I started it - it now has 241 views, and just one response that says “I really got nothing.”

And that’s equal to what I’ve known Bill DeBlasio to accomplish in his four years as Public Advocate: nothing.

From everything I can see, DeBlasio is a man who speaks with charisma and knows how to promote himself for elections - but then after winning he doesn‘t do anything… It seems crazy to think he’s leading the Democratic Primaries… I’ll admit I’m not crazy about any of his Democrat opponents either. But to me, DeBlasio is clearly the least accomplished of all these candidates.

I’m a firm Democrat - and when November comes I’ll almost surely vote for the Democrat over the Republican… But I just really hope September’s primaries don’t say DeBlasio has to be that Democrat.

Quite simply, I want a Mayor who - after being elected - is able to do something.

  • I think for the most part no one has any idea what most Public Advocates do. Can you list another Public Advocate who has achieved anything specific? Can anyone else? Is accomplishing things in the manner you request even a part of the position? As I understand it's more of a supervisory role in the first place besides being second in line to the Mayor.

  • The media I am reading seems to be stating he is not especially competent, but doing everythng one needs to do to be elected.

Gotham Gazette wrote: De Blasio As Frontrunner

The media appears to be eyeing Public Advocate Bill de Blasio as the new frontrunner in the Democratic mayoral primary race after some polls showed him in the lead up to the primary. The New York Times takes a look at his management style during Hilary Clinton's 2000 Senate race and finds he "could be agonizingly inefficient in a high-pressure, ever-shifting situation." WNYC says that De Blasio has been the city's "official gadfly" for the past three years but that now he is trying to demonstrate "he also knows how to run things." Kenneth Lovett of the Daily News scrutinizes De Blasio's plan to raise city income tax on those making more than $500,000. He says it would need the blessing of the state and that insiders tell him that raising taxes "would have virtually no chance of passing in Albany next year."

  • Honestly at this point I'd prefer a do nothing mayor to Bloomberg 2.0 aka Quinn. Who knows the guy might surprise us.

  • Based on the latest polls, it is looking like we are going to get to see what kind of Mayor he will be.

  • The NY Times' endorsement of Quinn has pushed de Blasio to the cusp of 40%.

  • I used to play softball and go out to eat with Bill after the games in the 1990's and I can tell you that he is a real person, not a politician, and an honest guy. One of the nicest people I ever met. I'm not in his City Council District so I don't know what he did at that time but I curently agree with him on 95% of the issues.

  • Celebs for de Blasio

  • I do love the part about how they are voting for him because they are against people being pushed out of their neighborhoods.

How exactly is a Mayor going to control market rents, or the actions of the Rent Stabilization Board?

  • -Brad Lander has represented this area in the City Council for 4 years. I can give you a long list of things he’s accomplished in those 4 years.

-Bill DeBlasio represented this area in the City Council for 8 years, then Public Advocate for 4 years... Yet it seems nobody can name anything he accomplished in those 12 years.

…… there’s just no way I can give my vote to DeBlasio.

I’ve decided I’m voting for Bill Thompson. I believe that he - along with DeBlasio, and Quinn - are the only three candidates with any chance of winning this primary (anyone else is a “waste your vote"). And while Thompson is not great, I think he is the best of these three if I had to pick one.

  • Did anyone notice how quickly Bill De Blasio was running through the parade route today?

I’m not questioning if he’s a nice guy. I’m just questioning if he has enough ability to make changes, so he should be qualified for Mayor of New York City

  • Garth, does this not bother you about Thompson? This seems worse than not having a record. http://gothamist.com/2013/08/31/pay_to_play_bill_thompson_invested.php

  • Garth-

I do not think a lot of people will vote FOR DeBlasio because they think he is great.

...they may vote for him because they simply don't want Quinn.

This! +1. For me he is the slightly not as bad alternative. Yay democracy! "Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time." Sir Winston Churchill

  • The best method would be to appoint me as Dictator. I would then be benevolent.

But it is increasing looking like we will end up with DeBlasio.

  • Whynot would your freinds on Brooklynian get cushy appointments? Personally, I'd like to be Commandant of His Excellency El Presidente whynot_31's Sanitation Department and Rehabilitation Centers. I promise not to overthrow you in a moderately bloody coup.

  • Like all of the candidates presently running for Mayor, I will run on a populist platform that promises things that I have no ability (or perhaps even desire) to deliver.

Have I told you about my 9 Point Plan to develop sustainable affordable housing, improve healthcare, lower taxes, reduce crime while respecting civil rights, and ensure a path to prosperity for the historically oppressed?

    Trust me, it is awesome.

  • I volunteer to be part of your puppet cabinet, with the understanding that when Newguy undertakes his coup, I will abandon you in the palace, renounce all your activities to date and switch sides. I will, however, not testify against you during the sham trial.

  • A bloody coup will not be required for me to vacate my post.

When my money is no longer sufficient to suspend term limits and/or purchase the allegiance of groups likely to vote, I will step aside and the voters can elect someone who claims to be nothing like me.

The fact that my replacement and I ate dinner together regularly while I was in office was purely business related. We are completely different.

Following the election, our dinners will resume.

  • What's the fun of a bloodless coup?

I know, right? I guarantee you an amusing and blood filed coup!

  • People-

I fear that you two are going to imagine that you are having a blood filled coup, but in actuality, you will be fighting people who are only one social class above you (police, people who operate stores, etc).

    I've seen this happen before.

  • We now return to the Mayoral race, where everyone is in favor of affordable housing.

Jeff, the Policy Director at Care For the Homeless, has written a pretty good piece that isn't caught up in fantasy:

  • This thread will be closed unless it returns to its original topic, which seems to have been abandoned...

  • You don't think we are still talking about politicians who promise to create changes they have no ability to implement?

...like the girl who ran for President of my 3rd grade class who promised that she would ensure we have longer recesses, less homework and better lunches?

    She won.

  • Looks like Bill DeBlasio might win.

  • I voted for my classmate. Should I vote for DeBlasio?

  • Well DeBlasio hasn't promised us more or any recess time at all!
