What's the deal with the 5 train? — Brooklynian

What's the deal with the 5 train?

It seems to me that the five train is permanently not operating past Bowling Green on weekends! What's the story with that? Is it ever going to change or is that just a thing now? It also seems to randomly due this late at night as well.

  • MAybe I've just gone nuts and the 5 train actually rocks.

  • Maybe.

...but the webhost has been having problems, so very few people have been able to get on.

  • The 5 train's been that way at least since I started riding it ... in 1988. No weekend or late night service in Brooklyn.

Blah, see I'm born and the five train goes to shit. Move to NYC and Wall Street tanks. I hope you're seeing a pattern here.

I never really paid all that much attention to the 5 train before to be honest. But I just started night classes this week at Hunter and not having it at nights going to be a huge pain.

  • Right. The 5 train stops because the 2 takes all of its stops in BK (or the 4 if you do Express up to Franklin Ae) There was a time not that long ago when it only ran during rush hour - not even during the day!

  • Actually late nights isn't so bad any more. The trains don't run as often as during rush hour, but there's usually less than 12-15 minutes between successive 4 trains. If you really can't stand waiting, you can take the 5 to Fulton and transfer to the 2 or 3, but they have a ton of stops between lower Manhattan and CH so it ends up being just as long if not longer than waiting for the next 4 to come along.

    Good luck with the classes!
