A bookstore for Franklin and Park Place: Hullabaloo

wow, a pretty miraculous turnaround. i've also seen and backed a LOT of kickstarter campaigns, but i have never ever ever ever seen one like this. with 3 days left, there was a bit over $4k pledged. they got an additional $14k in pledges in the last 3 days. wow. truly magical. or something else.

I met the guy starting Hullabaloo this weekend at the MorleyWalk, and it seems like a fantastic thing (and he's incredibly nice).

I think this kind of stuff is pretty common place with Kickstarter. The quick turnaround is definitely suspect, but I worked on a theatre project once where the producers basically budgeted in extra money to make sure they met their goal. And lo and behold, come crunch time, a friend made a last minute $750 donation. For something like a bookstore, I'm fine with it. I would much rather have an intellectually-dishonest-funded bookstore than another nice, fancy bar/restaurant on Franklin.
-
Unless I'm reading the site wrong, the highest donation was $250 (of which there were 3). Hardly suspicious. Congrats Hullabaloo! Looking forward to the series.

I'm understanding it the same way as Ridonkulous.
BTW, thier Facebook page says the bookshelves are going to look like this:

To see the potential of a bookstore, one should look at this recent photo taken outside of Greenlight Bookstore, Fort Greene.

With luck, Franklin Avenue could do this in 2016.

The photo of GL bookstore above is probably during one of their kids events (storytelling/singing). But yeah, I wont be surprised if the owner has kids events given he has a toddler of his own and also opened It Takes A Village childrens space down the street.

Yes, that stroller photo was taken during a kids event. I saw it on the Fulton Area Businesses page, https://www.facebook.com/#!/FABFulton.
By 2016, I foresee the neighborhood of Western CH having far more children than it does now. By then, such events will be feasible here.

The bookstore opens Friday, Sept 13th.

Slightly off topic, but I could not help link this thread to this excellent commentary on Kickstarter: http://brooklynian.com/forum/the-lounge-random-stuff/kickstarter-campaign-for-wwiii?replies=1#post-772269
I've also heard that the bookstore won't be ready by Friday, Sept 13, and now hopes to open on Tuesday Sept 17.

Bookstore is OPEN!!!!!. Nice rack of books outside that are pay what you will. and get this INTERESTING CURRENT MAGAZINES[u] now available in Crown Heights!!!!!!! Knock me down and call me Shorty. We have finally moved past the crappy corner bodegas and tabloid only version of Crown heights and can get decent eats and some food for the head.
I kissed Mr. Zelda's daddy. Get there and show your appreciation!!! On a side note. I complained to him that they were selling out of salted peanut butter cookies at Little Zelda's and he upped the order. You can all thank me for that. -

Looks like Hullabaloo has decamped for better quarters. When I walked by this evening, a fella was painting a sign on the door announcing their move to Franklin. They are on Franklin and St. Marks. I haven't gone by the new space (but its got to be better than the old cramped real estate!
-
Their facebook page confirms same. It seems they were at their cramped location for almost exactly two years.
