Whatever -- but I'm applauding you just for that avatar, DººD. I could watch that over and over!
  • i think i got everyone to postive range. if i miss anyone pm if you care about these things :P.

You sir are a gentleman and a karmic soldier. I salute you and retroactively retract any negative comments I may have made about you at any time in the last 10 months.

    ahhhh! armchair my good man.
you've discovered a fatal flaw in this karma
the timeout period needs to be longer than 10 minutes
that's too short as anyone with enough time on their hands
can singlehandedly make the karma irrelevant

if we're gonna keep it, the timeout period should be something
longer than 10 minutes, more like 24 hours

I just can't believe that he started a whole thread about how his prospective tenants "wasted" his afternoon!

thats one of my main complaints about this new system. one person or more. can just turn this system to mean absolutely nothing. if everyone gets like a limited number of votes on each user than it would work.
  • AW - your good deeds are contagious. I just eliminated someone's negative rating myself. It felt good - warmed me on this cold, windy miserable day.

I may still choose to use "smite" however from time-to-time to reduce some peoples high karma count so that they don't become too swell-headed or over-confident.

i guess that would teach them to be hubris.
  • Funny how Candissima's -13 karma points dissapeared in literally 5 minutes. :?

Especially how she herself acknowledged that she can manipulate the system (see: "if I wanted to smite you, I could have you make Armchair look good" (paraphrased)).

    Something stinks around here.

  • Sorry I didn't post earlier--am out of town for the weekend. I wanted to clarify two things.

The karma isn't meant to be a popularity contest. It's meant to give you a way of giving props to people who are helpful, friendly, funny, etc. It's meant to give a way of showing who is a valuable presence on the boards that doesn't have to do with post count--because we get a LOT of complaints about people (yes, more than one) who post a lot without really contributing to the conversation. If someone had 2000 posts about 800 karma points, anyone could see that they were a different sort of poster than someone who had 2500 posts and 28 karma points. It's meant to be a reward for worthwhile posting, as voted on by any user.

To the people who think that this has turned out very high school-y, I would say that I sort of agree, but that I've never seen an implementation of this feature work out this way (i.e. people smiting as much or more than they applaud), so to me, that says more about the social dynamics of these boards than the feature that was added.

As for the idea of there being a cabal of mods... I don't think there has ever been a board with more than one mod where users didn't believe this to be the case. I actually agree that there are too many mods, but the problem--as anyone who was on the board before about two weeks ago, when a new anti-spam thing was installed, will see--is that even with six (or however many) mods, there wasn't enough mod coverage to get rid of the spam as fast as people wanted. As long as the mods who ARE on this board get pissy PMs from impatient people who want spam deleted and other problems addressed rightthisverysecond, the mods will want there to be more mods, to spread out the work.

It does look weird - plus Emily went from -3 to +5 overnight, most of the mods pick-ed up overnight points. And I went from +4 at Midnight to -1 at 8:00AM - busy beavers in the wee hours! And what's up with AW - that's beyond belief - he must have all his friends signing in and voting for him

Emily - since you agree with a lot of us about the high school nature of this feature and since you are a strong observer of human nature, simply take down the fearture. It really sucks and is under such questionable access and usage as to render it pure fabrication.

lol if i ever had my online friends do that i probably have over few k in postive votes now. they'll macro for me lol. its pretty easy to set one up if one wanted to. (most of them are like me we have like over 20 to 80k in post on most message boards)

i'm just way too lazy and dont care enough to do that.

but its posters from this site that is doing it. not me :).

    thanks guys.

me i'm still giving postives when i see negatives. i think t he whole system is silly and its causing alot of friction among follow posters.

we have debate and so on. this is just getting hostile not good for forums. forums are suppose to let people get together and dicuss their ideas and debate them. this thing just makes it harder.

Actually, I think that Emily was pretty clear about the fact that the "high school nature" was a property of the posters and not of the feature itself.

Correct - that's why I put in the human nature part. A system is indistinquishable from its user base after a while. Such being the case one can't advocate for the feature when the users are corrupting it. Maybe this Board isn't quite yet sophisticated or mature enough to use the karma feature as the administrators envisioned - a vision that remains a mystery since it was implemented by fiat not discussion.

You know, in hindsight, a more democratic discussion concerning the possible adding of the feature would have been preferable.
  • Livetotravel wrote: You know, in hindsight, a more democratic discussion concerning the possible adding of the feature would have been preferable.
Yes. Ask us before implementing any features on a site that we don't own and are privileged to use.

    :-({|=
  • Regarding the cabal of mods, I don't feel this is the case, but why would more mods be a bad thing? If the mods are so overworked, assign separate mods to the PS and PH boards. That will cut the work in half assuming you double the mods.

As for the karma system, in a couple of weeks things will settle down and the behavio and associated numbers will normalize. How many times can pushing the smite button be fun?
  • cabal of mods: you can be one too if you wish to contribute your time

armchair: i know i'm boosting his karma every chance i get, gave him like 10+ applauds yesterday

karma timeout: change the 10 minutes to 24 hours, reset everyone's karma, and let's see what happens

Good point. If it's a private site then we are guest and have to abide by the owner's whims and rules. Perhaps this would go over better if applaud/smite was replaced with cookie/liver treat.
  • armchair: i know i'm boosting his karma every chance i get, gave him like 10+ applauds yesterday

I also sent some love Armchair's way. 8)

I don't mind the rep system, but would like to be able to leave a comment for the person I'm leaving karma for. It would also be nice if you could see who was leaving you karma.

Except no one can vote for themselves. Maybe someone thought it best to combat petty smiting as the case is with Armchair.

And I'd like to take this time to apologize for calling Flexi a bitch on the board. It's one of those things that should've only been muttered under my breath at home.

And I just applauded you for your act of positive karma.
  • I've exhausted my intellectual capacity for discussing this topic further.

So I'm bowing outta this thread and in an act of good faith have removed all my"karma" symbols - quote, avatar, location, etc.

From now on my avatar will represent my true passion - travel.

And hence, my last suggestion for replacing the karma points - can't we strike a deal whereby we award (or retract) frequent flyer miles instead?

Right.......13 karma points erased in less than 5 minutes after midnight when nobody else seemed to be here. If you didn't do it yourself, than one of the other mods who had access was probably involved in helping you. Go ahead and call that paranoid, but I think if it's not EXACTLY the truth, it's pretty damn close to it. Same way AW ended up with -35 almost immediately after the system was implemented.

As for that "apology" - um, who exactly are you apologizing TO? Somehow I don't think it was to ME.

As long as the moderators can manipulate votes, and as long as people can vote every 10 minutes, this karma thing is a reflection of nothing.
  • Gracious acceptance of an apology.

    Poor form, Flexi.
