Burned out car on Park Pl b/w Nostrand and New York Ave
Walking the dog this morning I came across an SUV that had been set on fire and trashed on Park Place between Nostrand and New York Avenues, apparently over night. I overheard some residents chatting about it, and it sounded like there were two or three other cars in the neighborhood that got the same treatment last night. Anyone else see or hear anything about this?

Yes, cops said there were "four or five" cars on fire last night from Vanderbilt up to NY Avenue on various blocks. They credited "kids", but I wonder if our local firebug is back at work. It seems that this fits his MO.
A lot of the damage was evidently part of the protocol in extinguishing the fire. Firemen broke the glass and pried open the door and hood in an attempt to put it out completely.

In terms of insurance, I suspect a car is totalled once either the engine compartment or the passenger compartment burns.
The owner is then paid out as per their insurance policy.
So, the fire department's protocol only reduces the price that the insurance company gets when they sell it to the salvage people.
BTW, I've heard the best/cheapest way to set car on fire is to break a window and then throw in a lit sterno can.

...but doing so is against the law.
-
It also leaves evidence pointing to arson which in that case the owner might not get paid at all even if he/she wasn't the arsonist.
-
If insurance companies don't have to pay out in instances where there is evidence of arson, I imagine all of the aforementioned cars will not result in a payment.
Parked cars rarely spontaneously combust.
-
The fire was set externally, either on the bumper or in a wheel well. Since it was near the gas tank, the firefighters took measures to assure that it would not spread.
-
A sterno can placed against a tire would probably also do the trick.
I imagine that one tire on fire is enough to set the whole car on fire.

So it looks like the NY Ave fire got reported pretty quickly where the earlier fires burned a lot more and had more damage. Looks like whomever it was walked west to east and did some pretty extensive damage along the way.

I might be a little crazy but parked in Clinton Hill and walked home today. Plan on doing that until there isn't much talk of 5 cars blowing up.

Must have been caused by some global warming, fossil fuel hating freak who thinks that destroying an SUV is going to cool the earth back down.

That is a possibility.
Audi is a German car, so if the other cars are German as well, we could hypothesize that it is a Holocaust survivor. However, most survivors are now quite old and feeble, so this seems unlikely.
Or, we could just conclude it is someone who likes to watch things burn.
Whatever is easiest.
...I hope they catch the person, but I can't say his/her motivation interests me too much.

I think the scorecard is Saab, Audi, BMW.

Maybe it is a "Die Hipster/Yuppie Scum" class thing.
...if that is the case, it is equally stupid. But, that doesn't mean we can't give the pyro advice. They should look for permits on the cars that allow people to park in the Hamptons beach spots, or Hamptons real estate brochures on the back seat. I've been seeing those around.
