Church bells near Washington Ave/Park Place? — Brooklynian

Church bells near Washington Ave/Park Place?

nomad
edited November -1 in Prospect Heights

I've lived in my apt on Prospect Place & Underhill Ave for 7 years, and never heard any church bells ringing - until 3 weeks ago (Sept 21 2013)!

Where are they coming from? They peal each hour on the hour - with a chime for each hour. Why haven't I heard them before? Has some church just refurbished their bells?!

Most peculiar - but rather lovely. First time I heard them I thought I was hearing a neighbors cell phone ring, but they're too regular for that.

My apt faces and they sound like they're coming from Washington/Crown Heights area. Any ideas?

  • They are coming from St Teresa's Catholic Church on Sterling Place at Classon Avenue. They only recently started ringing them. They chime the hour, but I haven't heard much else. The parish might have come into some money because they're doing some work on the stained glass windows on the Sterling Place side. The church lost some cornice work on the bell towers during Superstorm Sandy, so maybe the parish/diocese is finally going to repair it.

  • I just came to this message board to ask about this. I LOVE it and am so glad for this new addition to the neighborhood.

  • I just noticed these this week (can hear them from close to the BK Museum). Love the addition to the neighborhood.. been here for almost 14 years and have never heard bells until now.

  • It's a pleasure to hear the them again. They used to chime when I grew up over here. I knew something was missing other than stray dogs when I moved back.

  • I too am so happy to hear these. I can't believe how far the sound travels. I'm on Lincoln/Washington.

  • Thanks all! I guess I should have walked a bit further to look for the source, but why do that when you can just ask the internet!! :)

It most certainly is lovely to hear them.

  • I was also struck by this starting, and wondered if I just hadn't noticed it during the two years I've been in this neighborhood. I love it, and now I know what time it is!

  • Yeah, I've lived right beside the church for nearly 11 years. They used to ring them, then stopped after the storm. Nice to hear them going again. However, even nicer would be for them to get rid of that construction shed. I feel like it's becoming a permanent part of the landscape.

  • I live on the block and love the bells. Ditto on the construction shed.

  • Really nice at 6pm

  • i had the same reaction: really enjoyed them and wondered if they were new. not just hourly chimes, but also some carillon-type playing. anyone know more details?

  • @smokin - more than simple bell ringing at 6pm. Not sure about other times in the day.

  • i've heard a big ben style hourly chime -- the little 8-note tune followed by strikes for the number of hours -- most times. but a couple of times i've heard longer plays. curious as to whether this is automated or a human ringer.

  • I grew up around the corner. I can still hear the bells. It was lovely. It took a long time to losing them.
