Fancy food coming to the Brooklyn museum — Brooklynian

Fancy food coming to the Brooklyn museum

The door is closing on Saul Bolton’s restaurant on Smith Street in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn. Sunday will be its last day. But this is a happier story than the usual tale of a lost lease. The restaurant will be reborn in the fall in the Brooklyn Museum, perhaps as the borough’s answer to the Modern. The museum and its food service operator, Restaurant Associates, courted Mr. Bolton. And keeping the original Saul open was not an option. “They wanted it to be moved,” Mr. Bolton said. Yet to be decided are the new name and the fate of the Smith Street location. “We own the building,” Mr. Bolton said. “It’s our retirement.” Brooklyn Museum, 200 Eastern Parkway, Prospect Heights, Brooklyn.

  • The most interesting thing I take away from this is that they own the building Saul currently resides at. Smart move, probably done long ago, great foresight & great nest egg.

  • I like that the Bk Museum is literally buying the rights to his current reputation and business; It is "moving", not opening a second location.

I suspect that the museum will soon begin requiring that all of the events (weddings etc) that happen on site use this entity.

...presently, they have the option of using off site caterers.

This is a nice way to keep all that $ in house, and keep the museum solvent.

  • I have heard this place will open "before Thanksgiving", but haven't been able to confirm that.

Saul's has provided us with a little pre-opening buzz:

"Our new restaurant at the Museum also includes an incredible kitchen and outdoor Terrace – not to mention the opportunity to serve as the first table-service restaurant in a world-renowned cultural institution in the heart of Brooklyn!"

Note, this business has two additional locations: The Vanderbilt and Red Gravy.

  • One of the banners in front of the museum now advertises this venue, and it reportedly opened on October 18th.

  • We went this last weekend for a 'date night'.

It was super delicious and super expensive.

You are definitely still eating in a museum, for better or worse.

I might do it again next year.
