Alternatives to Time Warner Cable? — Brooklynian

Alternatives to Time Warner Cable?

Anyone know of any alternatives to Time Warner Cable? I hate them. Cablevision doesn't appear to be available on my block (st johns and fifth) - anyone know of any others?

  • Not sure but did you call 1 800 ok cable? I think that's the number for service providers in the area (or is it the number for TWC?)
    RCN?
  • RCN is not in this area yet. I know because I call at least once a month seeking a TW alternative
  • There's always satellite. You won't get NY1 or any of the community channels, and you'll probably pay a little more. However, they are responsive and the signal is better so it's not effected by clouds and storms that much.
  • Subject: Cable vs. Satellite

Both have quirks, but satellite is affected by weather a bit more than a well-maintained cable system.
Rain-fade. Heavy storms disrupt satellite signal. Happens to the big guys (NBC, CBS, etc) happens to you too, especially since satellite tv subscribers have a much smaller dish.
Lack of competitvely priced internet service.
Also, did you check with your landlord?
Even though a cable line may pass by your home, it's up to the landlord whether the building can itself be wired.
FYI, put the damn thing on the roof. Parts of the city have gotten much uglier with dishes on fire escapes (illegal) and windowsills.
    Also ...
Depending on where you live (east or west of Flatbush)
either Cablevision or Time Warner will be your provider.
That's it. No RCN, no one else.
Verizon's about 5 years and a lot of bribes, ahem, City Council hearings away from providing cable tv service to residents of the 5 boroughs ...
  • Actually, I believe landlords are obligated to allow cable companies to set apartments up. Some weird law where the cable companies can intrude on a landlord's rights as a building owner so as people can have their televison. I think the landlords get a small compensation package of a dollar. Maybe two.
