Fish mongers on Nostrand? — Brooklynian

Fish mongers on Nostrand?

This is not just an excuse to use the word "monger."

I'm intrigued by the three fresh fish markets on Nostrand:

Ses Blue FIsh between sterling and St. johns

Mermaid Fish market at president

and then another one...not sure of the name, up by the A train stop on the east side of Nostrand

I can't find any reviews of these places on the internet or any of mentions of them on these boards. Has anyone shopped there and lived to tell the tale?

  • I find Mermaid to be the best. They are my go-to if I'm doing local fish shopping. The selection is fresher and they don't have that day-old fish smell.

I only go to Blue Fish for their prepared food. They have a steamer platter with fresh veggies and your choice of seafood (crab legs, shrimp, etc) that is to die for. I've only picked up fresh fish once or twice and lived to tell, but they don't have enough turnover for my personal taste.

Haven't used the one up near Nostrand. It, however, is the newest of the three and I know people that shop there with no complaints.

  • a dude from my cycling team is opening one on Vanderbilt VERY soon as well.
