Fight and shots on Park Place
Did anyone else hear or see it? It occurred at about 1:40 and involved a dozen or so young adults or teenagers. Started with a guy and a girl shoving in the street and see escalated to a bigger deal. More and more people joined in. I called 911 twice in a 15 minute span. Was assured help was on the way. About 10 minutes later fight started again and shots were fired. It took 15 minutes for the cops to show.

I don't see anything on Breaking News Network about it, so I hope that means no one was actually hit by the gunfire. This was near Park Pl and what cross street?Classon?Franklin?Nostrand? From your account, it sounds as if one of the youth had a gun on them. For some reason, I find that more disturbing than the stories that involve a kid "running somewhere, and then returning with a gun".

The fight started at Nostrand and Park and shifted east. I didn't actually see who fired the shots so it's possible they went home, got a gun and came back. Their were at least 6 or 7 people involved in the actual fight and about that watching.

Yep, heard most and saw a little. It seemed to start with a guy and girl out in the street fighting (never could figure out why he had no shirt or coat on) and escalated from there. Saw the guy get chased down the block and return a few minutes later to get into his car which was double-parked and running in front of the apartment building. Cops pulled up had some words with him and the other 2-3 people with him and he drove off. 10-15 minutes later a flurry of shots and lots of people coming in an and out of the middle apartment building. I called 911 after the shots and a couple of patrol cars and an ambulance responded (but interestingly, not the police van that had originally shooed away the pugilist). There was a middle-aged woman at the front door seemingly blocking the cops from coming in and pointing down towards NY Ave as if the shooting took place there.Newguy, have you noticed that one of the apartments on the top floor of the middle building seems to be used as a club on the weekends? They have a full on LED DJ moving lighting system installed which you can see from the street at night.

Homeowner, that was a police van that showed up and then drove off? I thought it was that ambulance parked on the corner. That's why the crowd went back in the first time. Didn't that cop know a large angry crowd like that means trouble? I think what worries me most is just how FUBAR the police response was. It seemed to take them forever to get cops here considering there are always a couple cops at that deli on Nostrand and Park as well as few more pairs at various other places on Nostrand. Plus a cruiser and or a van always seems to be parked at that Dunkin Doughnuts on Eastern. I've noticed the lights on a few occasions however I didn't realize they were professional grade. I've also heard the bass coming from that place coming out of that place at night. I figured it was just a guy who really liked to throw apartment parties. However an illegal club would explain why there were so many people around. Homeowner how old the people look to you? Some looked like high schoolers and some looked older but I'm not to sure. I heard some girl screaming about going back to Greenpoint so at least some weren't local. If we can confirm an illegal club exists what should we do about it? Because I quite like our quiet peaceful block and don't want a repeat of this incident.

If it's an illegal club call 311 and they will report it to to some important group who takes things seriously that I can't remember the name of right now. The city may not care about getting to the scene very quickly, but they sure don't like missed fees and someone operating without a liqour license, especially if you say there is underage drinking. Start keeping a log of what times you see the parties happening and especially good if you can get an estimate on the number of people attending.

It was definitely a police van. The original argument had died down by that time (I'd guess it was 10-15 minutes after the height of the initial dustup). There were only a handful of people outside at that point, and as soon as the van came through the intersection, people either went back in the vestibule of the building where the original action occurred or started the "I don't know anything, I'm just walking" stroll towards Nostrand. Given the fact that the same van didn't return, its possible it was cops coming through the neighborhood, just trying to get the double parked cars moving and didn't even realize there had been a fight there a few minutes earlier. The whole apartment club thing is new. I first noticed during the Christmas/New Year's week and assumed it was just a holiday party. However, since then the lights have been on each weekend. As someone who has been here for a while, those buildings have been the source of a lot of problems although things have gotten incrementally better over the years. It always seems to be a group of late-teens, twenty-somethings and the arguments run the gamut from girl-fights to drug disputes. I believe that most of the combatants do not actually live there but are nieces, nephews, grandkids, etc. and their friends that are coming to visit relatives in the building. When I first moved to the neighborhood, the fights probably averaged 2 a month. Now we're down to 3-4 a year. If we can get the last vestiges of the drug crew that used to operate out of 849 off the block and stop the young ones on the Rogers/Nostrand block from believing that a vacuum exists that can move into, the block should get even quieter.I'd start with Assemblyman Camara. He lives on the block and has two small kids. I think he has a stake in stopping the fist-stick-knife-gun escalations from happening.

Via 311, one could also call the FDNY and DOB and let them know that it is being used as a "Place of Assembly" without a permit, and you don't want a Happy Land Fire. http://www.nyc.gov/html/dob/downloads/pdf/pa_guide.pdfhttp://www.nyc.gov/html/dob/html/development/pa.shtmlhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Happy_Land_fireWhen written down, mailed via Certified Mail and CC'd to every local politician and the Community Board, such statements tend to get their attention because they make them potentially civilly liable for not doing anything.

I'm going to keep a close eye on this place. If it appears to be club, as it seems, I'll contact the appropriate people including via certified mail.

All seemed pretty quiet this weekend!

As I said, its far from an every weekend occurrance. However, when the fights come they are large and crazy!
Howdy, Stranger!
