PH Parents of Teens

Any parents of teenagers out there in the PH/DH community? If so, what do your kids do in the summer?

My son, now 16, lives with me in the summer and since we're not tuned into the school scene here, we are always struggling with summer things to do. In the past we've found good day camps or full-time volunteer opportunities. This summer he's taking an SAT prep course which won't fill his days. Are there part-time volunteer opportunities he might be able to get in on? Safe spots to hang out?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

The park, zoo, and botanical gardens all have volunteer opportunities, check their respective sites.

It won't help this summer, but when he gets a little older, we're always looking for research assistants in the Emergency Departments at Kings County and Downstate (just a few stops away on the 2 train).

He can volunteer at Celebrate Brooklyn as well. There are some very cool kids that work there.

Does he know HTML?

Unfortunately he does not know HTML. Apparently it's just not cool, because it's what Mom does for a living. Who knew building websites would become the new accounting.

He is, however, learning Flash.

Subject: Film class for teens at the Y

Also - I work out at the Y in Park Slope (9th street and 6th Ave.) and saw a poster up for a summer film class for teens that looks pretty cool, you may want to check that out.

Well, I'm not going to send him to Half or Soda to hang out, being as he's 16. And by "safe" I mean, places for kids to hang out where their parents can be relatively sure they will be ok on their own. I consider myself a cool mom and all, but he is my baby and I would like to protect him forever.

According to restless native in the 'stoned on st. marks' thread, he could stand in the street all summer throwing rocks at your neighbors and it would be perfectly acceptable.
