Jewish Hospital

my ex-boyfriend just rented an apartment there and is moving in 10/1. we went to look at it together and it's a pretty decent size with a spacious terrace with a great view of manhattan. we looked at several apartments in the building and they were all decent looking, although they are on the pricy side. he's paying 1550 for his space, which is probably at least 700 sq. feet -- and with that view, we both thought it was a decent deal. there's another thread on this board on this topic if you do a search.

I am moving in at the end of the month and was just curious if anyone who is currently living there had anything to say about it. I'm moving into the same situation as your ex. Some of the apts. they were trying to rent were way to much but I think for what's offered 1550 was alright.

My boyfriend and I are moving in on Sunday. We're excited but I am also curious to hear from people already there or if anyone has any info about the neighborhood.

I live less than half a block from the Jewish Hospital on Prospect. We moved in a short time ago- about 3 weeks. What kind of information were you looking for? -
Well, you'll be able to see into my kitchen windows if you are going to be on the south side of the building (Our backyard faces the backyard of that church on Prospect). Now that people are moving in, I might finally need to invest in some curtains
-
i guess most people are just moving in, or, if they live there already, they don't know about dailyheights.com -- someone should post a flyer in the lobby
-
I think most people are just moving in. I just started seeing signs of life/personal decoration this month.
-
I guess most people don't know about this site. I'll put something up when I move in or just pass the word along when I meet people. This site has been so helpful for me for all different stuff. I feel like the whole building is new we should have a open door building party or something.

can I get cable vision or only TW?
-
it's going to be either/or ... based on the location I would assume it's Cablevision ... that's what I hve on Prospect b/w Grand and Classon.

Subject: Cable
For good or bad, you're definitely on Cablevision turf.
I'll say this about the area (as Ana.log can verify, since we live on the same block, I guess!)- it may seem rough around the edges at times, but there are a ton of really nice people in the neighborhood. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't tuck away your iPod when you're walking around or that you can be blissfully unaware of your surroundings, but don't be afraid to talk to people on the street- you may be surprised. -

Why do you say "only TW"?
I'm stuck in Cablevisionland now. Having had both services, I can definitely say that TW is far superior, both in the channels offered and in digital services (such as the interactive guide, which works MUCH better on TW). I've had cable modem with both, and they seem about equivalent in that regard. -

Yeah, most people that I've talked to in the area refer to CableVision as GhettoVision because of sevice, quality of product, etc... -

Haha--I hadn't before, but I will now!
Yep, it's strictly Cablevision, unfortunately. -

I second that assessment. And I also recommend the deli on the corner of Classon & Park (Nashal) for all your bodega-type needs. Those guys are great. -

FYI -- I have cablevision, too, and had been suffering from horrible service, frequent loss of signal, etc. I finally took matters into my own hands when the last service call forgot to patch up the hole from the outside world, leading to my splitter shorting out. I patched the hole myself and bought at $10 splitter at radio shack (one of their 'gold' products). since then, it's been trouble free. so, if you're having a lot of signal issues, try buying a new splitter. cause cablevision does suck. -
Cablevision is ghettovision but I've had really bad luck with Time Warner and dislike them. I also have a friend who works at Cablevision who hooks me up so then I don't get as annoyed when there is an issue.

just out of curiosity, do any of the residents in the former hospital get any "bad mojo" feelings?
i always felt a strange sense there, before they renovated that building. -
"bad mojo" meaning from the local residents who aren't living in the overpriced hospital? or hospital ghosts?
-
My girlfriend and I looked at several places and decided against living there. The apartments were beautiful, and you have to love a brand new space (new toilet!), but they were on the very high end of our budget. We just felt that was too high considering its location. We were able to get a great place for less in a little better location - that is, in our opinions.
-
I can't say you’re wrong at all. After signing my lease I had a little regret. I feel that I am paying $150-200 too much (some of the places are worse) however coming from an apt where if the hairdryer, microwave and ac are all plugged in at the same time a fuse blows and there are constant plumbing problems I was lured in by the idea of brand new. I just hope that there isn’t “bad mojo†although that is something that crossed my mind. We will see.

It does sound like the premise of a bad horror film.

We used to joke that it was haunted. It looked so creepy all empty and hulking. It looks really nice now, though, and I think it sounds like your apartment (Manhattan views, right?) will be more or less worth it. It's also, while not the prettiest part of the hood at the moment, improving daily, and you can't beat being RIGHT next to the shuttle, which connects to almost every single subway line in New York. It's so easy to get home from anywhere. That's worth something.
I'm curious who these people are who are going to pay for the less-nice-but-more-expensive units, though. I'm feeling a little protective of our neighborhood, thinking about it. -
Something about the word mojo and Jewish Hospital just doesn't work.
The kind of late night horror film on PAX. -
The hallways really freaked me out. Seriously.
Still, you gotta love brand new toilets. I can't say this enough. -
It seems to me that the unit prices are all over the place and I also got the impression that the gentlemen renting them tried to take as much advantage as possible, he really is a douche bag in my opinion, but what can you do.
In my experience in the bldg it just seems like a lot of young white folks much like myself, I won't really know until I move in. -
what was that movie at the mental hospital with asbestos? oooooh, creepy.
-
I'm pushing the haunted idea out of my head so I don't freak myself out, although that was the first thing my hippie brother asked after seeing the building. I know the apts might be overpriced, but coming from a tiny $1850/ month 2 bedroom on the LES, this building is luxurious and cheap. Also, I can see how a big new building full of new people can freak the current resisdents out (response to bluedove, I think?) but we come in peace! we're good people! :P
-
A username like that, and you're calling your BROTHER a hippie?
-
I remembered going to visit my best friend in that hospital in 1984
