  • Can someone that lives there take and post pics of the hallways, and perhaps the apartments?

    That would be neat.
  • yeah, my boyfriend and i used to joke that it was haunted way back before they started renovating it. i always fantasized it looked like the hospital in either elephant man or return to oz on the inside. i can't believe they are getting that much! but new toilets and kitchens, and showers can't be beat.

it totally sounds like it could be the setting for poltergeist 3 or 4...how many did they get up to? and what's craig t. nelson doing these days? they could make it a funny horror movie though, by having woody allen, sammy davis jr, mel brooks and jerry stiller be the ghosts.

Sammy D would be pretty durn realistic. He died of cancer many years ago. :(
  • and he was jewish.
  • I just discovered DailyHeights -- great work!!

My husband and I moved into the hospital about 2 weeks ago, and so far so good. (Although one of my best friends took a poll at her work, to which 90% of her coworkers agreed that living in a hospital is creepy. To this, I argued that at least the people who died here most likely were not murdered -- can you say that about other NYC residences?? :o ). If there is any bad mojo, its definitely in the hallways, and the elevators sometimes have a mind of their own. Our acutal unit is great, and its so nice that everything is new! And you can't beat the view from the 9th floor (unless you're on the 10th or 11th floor, I guess  ). Anyway, the manager seems pretty willing to show anyone looking around. BTW, while I initially got the douche bag vibe from him as well, he's actually been pretty helpful -- especially when yours truly dropped our house keys down the elevator shaft!

I have heard a rumor that there is a new grocery store going in...does anyone know anything about this?? I'm afraid its just a rumor, but still...
  • The people that own the Jewish Hospital (Alma Realty) also put up the huge Taaffee (sp?) Place lofts a bit to the north, near Pratt. They put a grocery store in there, too. Trying to recreate the insta-neighborhood (read: maximize our $) in PH (or, rather Crown Heights, cuz the hospital is on Classon). I think the grocery store may be going into the new 15-story building, but I may be mistaken. I have been before.

Anyhoo, a note of warning: my friends live in the Taaffee Place lofts, and the management there is getting all shady, trying to boot people out that got in when the deal was sweet and jack up the rents. Ahh, free market.

On what grounds are they trying to boot people out?
  • JoshB writing:

My friend's neighbor was booted for being a couple weeks late on rent. Pay on time, or incur the wrath.
  • that just doesn't sound right - in order to "boot" someone you have to go through an eviction process which heavily favors the tenant. if the tenant continued to pay, and the landlord cached the checks, there would be no grounds to evict.
  • KelKel wrote: I argued that at least the people who died here most likely were not murdered
that's an extremely comforting thought ...
  • My grandmother has a ton of friends who were born at the Jewish Hospital, Myrtle, Larry, Nat, Sol, etc.

    This was me.
  • I was born at the Jewish Hospital
  • I live in the Jewish Hospital and though I've been paying rent since August 1st, we still have no gas in our apartment (or the whole building for that matter) so we can't cook.

Also, the laundry downstairs that we were promised has not yet come in.

Management refuses to give a date on when this will be fixed. Pretty shady and frustrating.

I'd advise people to be careful when thinking about signing a lease here.

The tenants in your building should organize, get a lawyer, and start holding your rent in an escrow account until your concerns are addressed.

and tell the lawyer to use those magic words..."constructive eviction."
  • Moscia, the gas is going to be on before Oct. 1, as for the laundry I never asked but you should call Alma's office directly and ask to speak to Lily. Tom is a douchebag and his son is at least 25% retarded. It's whack and sucks but you can at least get friendly and straight answers from Lily. Sometimes the brand new attraction backfires.
  • KateBklyn wrote: Moscia, the gas is going to be on before Oct. 1...
I called the main office and spoke to one of the top guys there, Nick. He promised me an October 1 date for gas too, but when I asked for that in writing, he backed down from his promise. Basically, he was just BSing me so that I would go away. He did mention that we are going to receive some compensation; however, he refused to specify how much.

Last week, he promised me he would give those assurances in writing, but yesterday when I told him that I hadn't received his letter, he told me that "Writing you a letter isn't important to me."

He promised me again to write one, but we'll see. Pretty unprofessional if you ask me.

Carnivore & t-fal: Do you know of any organizations that can help in this, especially on the legal side? I'd really like to organize, but I'm a little stumped on how to go about it.

I figure Saturday though, I'll knock on doors and talk to as many other tenants as possible.

    Thanks in advance.
  • Wow I cannot believe someone said that to you.

My roommates and I live in 5D and would be happy to figure something out with you.
  • They told me Lily is the manager and the only person to speak to about 555 Prospect... consistency would be nice.
  • Subject: Jewish Hospital Issues

I live at 551 Prospect Place, also part of the old hospital, and was among the first batch of people to move in there back in February. My roommates and me dealt with these same issues and more for weeks, and were extremely frustrated at the incompetent management of Tom and Alma Realty. The gas didn't work for almost two full months, the laundry facility that was promised was not there (and I suspect never will be--it's just utter bullshit), cable/internet wasn't available for about six weeks, the mailboxes weren't ready yet, there was a leak from a pipe in my ceiling, even the elevator didn't work occasionally toward the beginning. We were given a hotplate that couldn't even bring water to a boil. I talked to Tom about all these issues frequently, and he always passed the buck, said he didn't know anything, or changed what he had told me previously. His constant refrain was "I'm on your side," but he's completely useless and shifty. As for Nick Conway, I called him about 300 times without a response.

Anyway, eventually we drafted a letter detailing all these complaints, and asking for 40% off our first month's rent, which we received, along with the rest of the building. Toward the end of the second month, there was a meeting with tenants and more pestering phone calls, etc., and we received 30% off for that month. Since then, these problems have been resolved, and it has been a very good place to live (except for the laundry, which I'm still bitter about). The only problem recently is that we have been getting rent statements that claim we owe money, and we have no idea why--possibly because Tom was too dumb to properly record our initial payment. In conclusion, you can get significant money off your rent, and don't take no for an answer with these assholes.
  • Thanks Axel.
  • Subject: Re: Jewish Hospital Issues

    Yes, thanks very much, Axel.

So let's get organized in the hospital! I'll be coming around knocking on doors this weekend. Kate, I hope I can speak to you in person so that we can get what we deserve.
  • (except for the laundry, which I'm still bitter about)
I'm in 555 and overall, we have been treated pretty well. However, what makes me so angry is the inconsistency in the answers that everyone is receiving. I guess some people didn't even get hot plates...?? It feels discriminatory, and it's not acceptable.

As for the Laundry room, I have actually seen it with my own eyes. We insisted that Tom show it to us personally, and though he seemed to get lost in the series of tunnels underground, we eventually found it. I think it is somewhere between our two buildings (turns out the whole block is connected in one way or another). Anyway when we saw it about a month ago, all of the washers and dryers were in place, but still in packaging. It can't be too far away.
  • They actually gave people hotplates!? I don't view them as discrimatory but as lazy, they just don't care about the people, just filling the builiding and getting money but the way they run their business is offensive.
That said, thanks for organizing moscia... there's a bldg meeting in apt 2E this evening at 8 p.m. for anyone that reads this board.
  • Subject: Laundry

Hmm, I'm pleaantly surprised that the facilities are seemingly close to being usable. They originally made it sound like they were ready for use when we moved in, and then we were told they'd be up and running by summer. Now they'll be working when I'll already probably be gone or about to leave... but I'm glad someone gets to use them, anyway.
  • Subject: I'd like to move in there

I'm looking to rent a room in an apartment in that building. I love it.

I just don't want to rent a whole apartment just a room in an apartment share with somone. Anybody know of one? Or does anyone know who to call to rent an apt there?

Feel free to call me on 415 596 6844
  • hey, if anyone reading this lives in 555 and likes to have parties, please be aware that when your guests hang out in front of the building drinking and being loud, it keeps those of us whose windows face that way and who aren't invited to your party awake.

if it's perfectly obvious which apartment the party is in, and if, when someone comes by to ask that you keep it down, your response is rude and unhelpful, please consider that some of us get up A LOT earlier in the morning than you likely do and have no problem making time in our daily routines to ring your doorbell every day.
