'Fraid Parade? Don't be.
BUT
The Brooklyn Museum Panorama competition on Saturday might be the place to go to get your feet wet...not sure how that is intersecting with Target First Saturday...
http://www.panonthenet.com/articles/ny/2005_panorama/firstsaturday.htmNY Daily News wrote: The West Indian American Day Carnival officially begins this week with concerts, costumes and steel pan performances behind the Brooklyn Museum.
The Ladies Night performances on Thursday, Brassfest on Friday, Panorama steel band competition on Saturday night and the Dimanche Gras event next Sunday will warm up the Labor Day festivities. The season reaches a fever pitch Sept. 4 when the massive parade and street fair will be held along Eastern Parkway from Utica Ave. to Grand Army Plaza.

Essentially a massive pre-party.
preferred by some original participants as a non-electrified celebration -- pan playing, not sound trucks
the big trucks with sound systems overshadow the pan orchestras in the main parade
Idlewild, I'm so disturbed by this image of you punching your way out of a crowd -- I think of the parade experience in a punk-mosh pit kind of way, and I always hated the boys that started punching in that scene too . . .
I agree that the pens and bottlenecks as crowd control tactics of the NYPD are a disaster, but why fall for that and make it worse? bah.
I wasn't falling for anything. Myself, my g/f, and this guy and his kid next to me were suffocating and the crowd was squeezing us in. The police were laughing at us telling us we couldn't go underneath the barricade. Short of using my jet-pack I'm not sure what else there was to do except get out by force. -
whenever someone posts something like "guest" does - it makes me wonder why i live in this neighborhood. get over yourself "guest" it's a harmless parage that has been going on for over 25 years. There are wonderful people, great food and fun. it's no different that any other parade that takes place in this city. people are bound to have a little too much to drink and yes, there are a few folks who get out of hand, but it's happens everywhere i.e. Yankee Stadium, the St. Patrick's Day Parade, College campus' all over the country. So relax.

The Food!! Can't wait to eat some fried fish!!!

The food is good, but has anyone else noticed that the prices have gone up dramatically in recent years? Also, jerked pork has completely disappeared, with jerk chicken and curried goat totally dominating (not that those aren't delicious also, but I love me some jerked pork).

On another note:
I miss the Red Stripe truck! Before the Giuliani ban, I used to make my way along the parade route until I found that truck and then park my ass there for the rest of the day. $1 Red Stripes! It was so awesome! -
Oh man how I love this parade. My wife and I go every year and totally pig out on the food. Sure, there can be crime. But come on! If you were worried about crowds and being murdered, a city of 9 million probally isn't the best place to live.
However, I did read that David Byrne has been going to the parade for years. Back in the 80's (I think), him and Brian Eno were mugged at GAP during the parade. He still goes every year.
Good emough for Mr, Byrne good enough for me. -

No doubt the catalyst for penning "Psycho Killer."

More likely 'Life during Wartime'.
Wow, David Byrne and Brian Eno. That's about 3,000,000 cubic inches of cranial surface area right there. -

I guess if you folded in the fourth dimension you could get cubic inches onto a surface of a hypersphere... -
All I know is that there is a whole lotta pot being smoked at that parade which, to my mind, greatly reduces the chance of violent crime. Unless you are a bag of doritos. I've loved it every time I've gone - in fact, I thought the vibe was particularly happy and fun.
I just did the math and 3 murders among 2,000,000 people equals a .0000015 chance. And of those murders, how many were between acquaintances, with some history behind them? Maybe all. The person who started this thread should go out and enjoy it this weekend. Maybe get some pot too. -

Oh, man... What country are we invad- uh, liberating now?
-
The countries of Flatbush, Crown Heights and PH - ah, West Indian American Day Parade day - where cops now outnumber marchers.
-
I heart this thread. thanks for the link back, WhyFi.
-
Easy enough with the Best of Brooklynian thread. -
i'm from new orleans. you can't scare me
-
The parade attracts more than twice the population of NO, pre-Katrina.
Be very afraid.
-
you know how many people go to mardi gras? still, population ain't nothing. wanna talk about per capita murder rate? sadly, new orleans trumps just about everywhere, pre and post katrina. i think i figured out one day for for NYC to match NOLAs per capita murder rate, something like 10,000 a year would have to be murdered here.

Carnivore wrote: [quote=guest]Guess Im not totally wrong "Murder day parade" 3 shot last year alone. Call me a pussy if you want, but I dont like the odds.
Your odds are still pretty good. Over 2 million people go to that parade. That's bigger than most cities in the U.S.
So 3 shootings isn't that surprising. In years past, it averaged worse than that citywide on a normal day.
better than new orleans, evan? are there "murder day parades" in new orleans?? -
ummmmm, every day is murder day in new orleans. one of michele's high school classmates had her throat slit at a bar last week, and two of our friends were shot in their house earlier this year
-
I've had loads of fun at the parade over the years, all the while knowing that there is usually one major incident (shooting/stabbing/crushed by float, etc) per year somehwere along the route. I havent been in a few years though, and I'll be away this year.
Now that I'm older I tend to avoid the crowds on parade day. I would highly recommend Panorama which I think is the night before, and most events leading up to the parade. -
People get shot all the time in 'da Heights, I don't see what all the hoopla is about the parade.
I will be out in search of a new baby momma -
alafairnadia wrote: I heart this thread. thanks for the link back, WhyFi.
Almost that time of year again. Corn Soup-orama! -
last year at the parade i was getting touched by a lot of very young boys - like 1/2 my age it seemed. this one young boy came up from behind and put his hands on my hips. another young boy slipped his hand into mine and was simply all, "hello". so i guess the parade can also be very friendly.

The police in ph sure do laugh alot. It must be a happy job. -
Parades = family fun + entertainment extravaganza? What a load of crap. At parades you can get crushed by sweaty audiences, smashed by Godzilla-sized Big Bird balloons, and hit by cops before crawling through the parade aftermath of broken glass and rotting food.
-
one of the awesome things about the west indian day parade is how perfect eastern parkway is to host a parade. there's plenty of spectator space, vendor space, and even extra road space (the little frontage roads parallel to the main street) if you want to get out of the fray and move a bit more quickly.
also, there are no big bird balloons.
Howdy, Stranger!
