More carneviento deliciousness

I had the sopa de marisco (seafood soup) for lunch today. It's a special they only have on Fridays. $4 gets you a portion big enough for a meal with clams, shrimp, crab, lobster... so delicious. I may have to start going every Friday.

ADDENDUM: It's big enough for a meal for most non-piggies, but I did manage to also pack away a fried pork chop sandwich as well.

  • Heh, remind me to advise you of the general pitfalls of ordering fish in NY on any days other than tues.-thurs., especially specials. bet it was good though.
  • After reading about it for months on here, I finally had my first meal at El Carneviento last Saturday, taking a friend from out of town for breakfast. Deeeelicious! It was so good we went back a couple of days later for dinner.

    It's a good thing that it's just far enough from my place to discourage me from popping in all the time.
  • una pregunta: being a newbie (see designation, left), i'm intrigued but somewhat puzzled by all the talk of carneviento. a search turned up tons of threads, none of which (that i found) said what the hell this place was. is this the name of a restaurant or dh-speak for el castillo de jagua?

    (my clue was a reference to the grease blower in one post, which could certainly be described as carneviento.)

    It's the Latin restaurant right at the Seventh Ave Q stop. El Gran Castillo de Jagua or something to that effect.

  • UPDATE:

    I grabbed my laptop and wandered down to the carneviento for a quick bite before doing more work away from home. I spent the last half hour of the sunny daytime in the darkness that is the dining room of carneviento. I had a chuleta and maduros. YUM. I still have about 50,000 maduros left, if anyone wants any. I'm at half currently enjoying happy hour and working. :)

    in any case, I am very angry with myself for avoiding the carneviento for years and vow to return often in the future.

    Carneviento is perhaps my favorite restaurant in the neighborhood. Despite all the talk on the boards I was still too sketched out by the place to try it until a couple weeks ago. Ever since leaving Washington Heights and my beloved El Malecon I've been searching for a rotisserie chicken, black beans and rice, and maduros replacement. Carneviento is it, plus they understand (and can execute) the perfect over-medium egg.
  • I just want to say thank you to whoever mentioned the Mofongo. I ordered some last time (I needed to order SOMETHING to hit the delivery minimum).

    Verily, it is the food of the goods. I happily ate mofongo and rice with hot sauce every day for lunch that week. My office mates drooled with jealousy. I might order it again tonight. Plus, pricewise, can't beat a 10.00 meal that leaves enough leftovers for 3 lunches!

    in cuba and africa it is called fufu, fyi, should you run across that variation. same thing, though my dad will inevitably argue that fufu is more authentic. :lol::lol::lol:

  • Mmm I love their cuchifrito food too. Their acapuria (sp?) (mashed tarro root and green bananna wrapped around seasoned chopped meat and deep fried), potato balls (mashed potatoes and [I think] cheese wrapped around seasoned chop meat, rolled in some breading and deep fried) as well as their pastellio (their version of a meat pattie). All these are under $2 and can be a meal all in itself. Im talking about this good food when I just started my diet :(. Oh well I have to live vicariously through Carnivoire :)

    I keep trying to order the accapurria every time I go there since you recommended them, but they never seem to have them! :x

    just a plain ol' cuban sandwich. I couldn't pass up stopping in, given all the raves, but I was on the run to class and I didn't remember any of the other tasty-sounding suggestions in this thread. I will, however, be back!
  • well I did a search for "carnieviento drinks" and it turns out that there are many threads in which both el carneviento and drinks discussed, but I can't find one that discusses the drinks at el gran castillo... there are delicious sounding "shakes" on their menu... anyone have any experience with them? I'm intrigued by the orange juice/milk one, as well as the ones whose names I can't figure out.

    I guess it can't hurt to try them, regardless, but I was wondering if anyone could point me in any particular direction.
  • Ok, I tried the orange juice and milk when I was a young 'un (milk tastes good, orange juice tastes good, the two together must taste twice as good, yeah?), and I don't think even Carneviento could make that unholy mixture palatable.

    Even if they submerged a pork chop in it.
  • I'd stick with the shakes (batidos). mamey is always a lovely choice.

    the rice with shrimp is my new (read this month) favorite
    i used to love the bistec in sauce.
    i might be moving on to the bistec sirloin next.
    and we always get an order of the sweet plantains
    i hate them but my gf LOVES them.

    I finally got to try the alcapurrias today! AWESOME! Just the right balance of sweet and salty with the deliciousness of deep frying. I liked it even better than the papas rellenos (stuffed potatoes).
  • I had a 2nd-try Cuban there the other day - half was okay, the other half was the best Cuban that I've ever had... the guy that made it had put all of the choice cuts of pork on one half, all the too-fatty cuts on the other.
