you need to learn the "I'm Cuban" trick of opening up your sandwich and messing with it before you eat it. every Cuban I know, including me, is too particular to just consume something. we all fuck with the sandwich once we obtain it. :)
  • I'm a big fan of their octopus stew. The pulpo's not over cooked and it has a flavorful spicy heat. I also like their breakfast. Three egs sunny side with a side of cassava covered in beef stew gravy and oh those lil' toasty round breads smothered in mantequilla.
  • is the pulpo stew all the time? I love tentacles!
  • Indeed it is. The stew and pulpo ensalada. 364 a year.
  • Carnivore wrote: [quote=stacey]Mmm I love their cuchifrito food too. Their acapuria (sp?) (mashed tarro root and green bananna wrapped around seasoned chopped meat and deep fried), potato balls (mashed potatoes and [I think] cheese wrapped around seasoned chop meat, rolled in some breading and deep fried) as well as their pastellio (their version of a meat pattie). All these are under $2 and can be a meal all in itself. Im talking about this good food when I just started my diet :(. Oh well I have to live vicariously through Carnivoire :)
I finally got to try the alcapurrias today! AWESOME! Just the right balance of sweet and salty with the deliciousness of deep frying. I liked it even better than the papas rellenos (stuffed potatoes).

Im so glad you finally tried them. Now you know why I call them addicting :)
  • Subject: Orange/Milk Drink

The orange and condensed milk drink is called a Morir Sonando "Dying Dream". You can get it at most Dominican restaurants that serve breakfast. Ideally its fresh OJ, condensed milk and a ton of sugar.

    Diabetics shouldn't mess with it.
  • i actually had a burger from there last night for the first time. i know it's not particularly exciting compared to many of the other menu items, but it is particularly cheap, and I enjoyed it. One of my friends had an order of breaded steak with fries, a side order of rice and beans, and a whole rotisserie chicken.
Also, I apologize to anyone who may have been in El Gran Castillo last night around 10:45 when we were ordering and such. We were definitely making asses of ourselves
  • Its all about the chorizo sandwich and the fried pork-chunks. Sorry vegeterians and vegans, it might make you a meat eater if you try.
  • a month (or more) ago - whenever we had happy hour at mooney's last - I obtained a steak sandwich from there (they sadly did not understand my order of pan con bistec, but whatever). it was delish.

sometimes I want to stop there and just get some rice and beans. though. sometimes I wish there were a real cuban restaurant around.:cry::cry:

I've tried almost everything they make there that comes from the pig and it's all awesome except the ribs. I was kind of hoping for better with those. Luckily Viejos Amigos makes fantastic ribs.
  • Okay, I need help identifying something on the menu. A couple of weeks back, I ordered some chicken and got sent off with some poor guy's steak by accident.

This steak was thick, juicy, amazingly seasoned and probably the most badass best-tasting thing I've ever had there (and I go a lot). But what the hell was it? They only have about 4 steak dishes and I've ruled out Pepper Steak. Any ideas? I've already resigned myself to it probably being the most expensive thing there.

I don't know, but I want that now!
  • I'd say it was either the sirloin, the beef steak in sauce or the steak with onions. perhaps the three of us need to plan an exploratory dinner?

    I'll help.

Any further guesses on which steak dish this was? Because I may order delivery from them tonight and this sounds SO good!
  • I'm guessing the sirloin, because the "beefsteak" is thin, not thick like Candicissima described. And I think the pepper steak and steak with onions would have been obvious. Also, I think the steak with onions is cut thin.
