Best Indian Food in PS
Even though this happened a little while ago, I was so disgusted by the whole affair I felt it was only right to post. I was originially excited when Star of India opened at 5th/Prez. Disappointed the few times we ordered from them and went to eat there. We more recently decided to give them another chance and ordered delivery. The food looked fine when it arrived, but the first taste revealed an overwhelming flavor of burnt plastic. Both of our meals had the same flavor - overwhelming melted plastic. I called SoI to explain... they very reluctantly sent over a replacement order. I made the delivery guy stay at the door while we tasted and, again, plastic. The delivery guy even tasted the food and agreed. When I called SoI they refused to acknowledge the problem - insisted it was our problem, and refused a refund. Mediocre Indian food and poor service to boot. Anyone else have similar experiences with SoI?

no burnt plastic, but the food I had from Star of India wasn't worth eating.
Joy on Flatbush is so much better (excellent vegetarian everything), and delivers all over the Slope. Kinara in the South Slope is also supposed to be good, but I haven't been. -
Subject: If you want good Indian in Park Slope....
I've eaten at SOI many times and always found the food pretty good, if not remarkable. Given the speed with which cheap/decent restaurants are disappearing in Park Slope, I try to support the few remaining as often as I can.
That being said... now that I've tried Kinara (Fifth Ave. between 10th and 11th streets), I'll never eat at any other Indian in Brooklyn. It is really something special. -
i LOVE joy indian on flatbush.. eff everything else in the area! those guys are nice too. and the prices are really good, this side of east sixth ,anyway.

If you don't like the food, don't make the delivery guy taste it too. Get some class and while you're at it, get a life. -
im a little mystified as to why you take the time to respond to a post you consider a waste of time. the purpose of these boards is to solicit discussion and share experiences. at the risk of dignifying your message with a response, i didn't make anyone taste anything... we were on a back and forth with the restaurant on the phone and the delivery guy tasted the food and told them it was funky.

I am amazed that SOI is still in biz - Have you ever seen more than 2 people in there? - I havent

Subject: About to order takeout from KINARA
I truly hope it won't be awful. I've read mixed reports on this forum.... -
Report back!

well? well? im itching for some indian...

I love Kinara, never had a bad experience. Also, you can order one of their specials, app, entree, naan and it will easily feed two people so it's a really good deal. The chicken tika masala rocks!

Subject: what mixed reports?
I'm not sure what you mean by "mixed reports." One whack job posted about a time she called in an order without knowing what she wanted, and the guy on the phone lost patience with her. Frankly, I would have too. I've ordered from Kinara dozens of times and never had a problem with the food or the service. -
I could have said word for word what the guy above me said-I didn't see any "mixed" reviews on here-one person complained and a ton of other people said they order from them all the time with no problem.

Subject: kinara is ok
we've ordered from there a number of times. not the best indian food on the planet, but it's ok. nothing spectacular, but not bad. my husband orders white meat chicken for his madras, he said otherwise the chicken is not so nice. (I get veg stuff). they're not too chatty on the phone, but i've had good service.
speaking of losing patience on the phone, anyone have that experience with Arecibo? i'm not one to waste time on the phone but i ordered a car & the guy totally hung up on me without confirming or even responding after i said the address, i called back to ask how much and after i said i was calling to find out the price he HUNG UP ON ME. I called back again and he just yelled at me, 'i don't have time for this'. i was like Okee dokee & called park slope car service. geez man. patience is one thing, rude is another. -

Aricebo are MAJOR assholes!!!! I will never ever use them again. Cannot stand them. I like LEgends - although they can be a bit anal. Brownstone cars seem very good too.

Report on KINARA to follow!!! -
So, Kinara. They were very abrupt on the phone. Very very very abrupt. To the point where I had to call back TWICE - first to say "excuse me but I want to pay by credit card" and second to say "how long will the order take, roughly". Each time the man on the phone had slammed the phone down when I was still talking. Very odd.
The curry itself was delivered by a smiling, cheerful man who beamed at the $5 tip he got. The curry was piping hot - in more ways than one. I took the precaution of ordering a Vindaloo since I'm tired of ordering Madrases only to find they've been made less spicy to cater to the palate of the typical Westerner. This Vindaloo was a fully fledged Vindaloo - ie a tongue burner. It's very good. Next time I would probably feel satisfied with a Madras. And there WILL be a next time - their food is good. Let's hope they don't slam the phone down on me next time. -

Never heard of Easter. Or do you mean Eastern? -
Subject: SOA
I've been to this place a few times out of desperation. I love all kinds of Indian food. The food here is not very good, not hideous either. I am a vegetarian, so I order chana masala often. The chick peas they use at SOA are canned, and the samosas should be more crisp. I wonder how they stay in business also, I too notice that it seems to be empty all the time, but for one or two diners. I can't wait to try Kinara. -
So what is the consensus on where to order Indian?
Joy?
It would be great to have a solid place to order from. -

North Slope/PH --> Joy

South Slope --> Kinara -
Much obliged.

Subject: Star Of India
I was excited as well when Star Of India opened, but I will not eat there anymore. The first couple of times I tried it, everything was fine, but since then I've had a couple of deliveries from them that just went into the trash can. Nothing toxic, just bad cooking. I don't want to taste ketchup in my curry! I've resigned myself, for now at least, to travelling to Manhattan to satisfy my Indian food cravings. I love Gandhi on Sixth St. and Curry In A Hurry on Lexington at 28th St. -
Finally made it to Joy on Flatbush this past weekend. It wasn't bad at all... not the best Indian I've ever had, but everyone was super nice and the Motir Paneer was quite good. I'll definitely go back.

Piitb the delivery guy.

Ouch dude, cold. -
Can anyone give a reccommendation of favorite Indian places in the Slope. My boyfriend just decided he likes Indian cuisine so I'm happy we can finally take advantage of some local Indian restaurants. I've only ever been to Bombay Grill on 7th.
-
none of it is brilliant, but Joy and Kinara appear to be the favorites.
Star of India has, er, fewer fans.

Oof. I hate answering these things because it always turns into, "No way, I don't like {that place you just mentioned} at all, {place I prefer} is waaaay freakin' better, etc. etc."
That being said, Kinara has my business. Their vindaloo is no kind of joke. -
Kinara. I chowed down on their spinach all through the recent e coli scare.
Come to think of it.... that could explain things.... -

you're so right.
to get that out of the way, I'm going to merge this with earlier discussion of the subject . . .
