Who's from Sheepshead Bay?

  • i doubt anyone LOL.
  • When I was a kid, my grandparents used to live in Sheepshead Bay. I haven't been back in a while though.
  • they have tons of new restruants and stuff now there. and the theather there is one of the biggest ones in brooklyn and they have a new huge parking lot.
  • We used to love to head over to the Comedy bar there - Pips.

Someone told me about a really nice Italian restaurant there called Maries or Maria's know anything about that place?
  • I lived in sheepshead bay for a year, in a rented house off of Ave Z. The Heightsters/Slopesters who inhabit this board might find it crazy, but there's alot to like about the sheezy:

    Things I liked about SB:
    1) Near the beaches - besides the obvious ones (Brighton Beach/Coney Island), there's Manhattan Beach, as well as the more blue collar Plumb Beach.
    2) Near to Gateway National Recreation Area. If you don't know the Brooklyn/Queens shore area, you might not know this exists. The best thing to do is get a bike, and ride the trail from Sheepshead Bay (on Emmons Ave) to Far Rockaway and go to the beaches there. Along the way, you get to see the wildlife, pass over on the bridges, go by the abandoned airfield, etc.
    3) Cheap - when I was there (about 2 yrs ago), a 2.5 br house with front yard, back yard, and deck was $1550/mo.
    4) Sheepshead Bay (the body of water) is pretty neat too, with the fishing boats and everything, but the shops and restaurants along it are flat-out tacky. There used to be a partially sunk boat in it (complete with a 'keep-out' sign), but they pulled it out.
    5) Quiet. No loud bars or clubs near where I lived. It was mostly families and/or the elderly.
    6) Bagels. Bagel Boy on Ocean Ave is the best. Period. I remember hearing that Bergen Bagels had the best bagels in Brooklyn, but they simply cannot compare.
    7) Not being over-developed. Unlike, say Brighton, or South Slope, or Ratner Heights.

    Things I didn't like:
    1) Far, obviously. You know how people in Manhattan pull the "Brooklyn is to far" thing? People in the rest of Brooklyn do that to Sheepshead Bay.
    2) Subway is above ground - this is ok, except when you're waiting for the train for 20min in the middle of winter, which I did, a lot.
    3) It's kind of a drab neighborhood. And the mural under the subway bridge is hideous.
    4) Bars/Restaurants: I only ever went to one bar there, once: The Towne Cafe, right by the subway stop, and that was sort of a dare. The other places might be nice, I'm not sure.

Anyway, it certainly has its charms. And for the record, I'm not Russian.
  • my girlfriend lived there when she first moved to NY, and she loved it.
She's not Russian either, but everybody sure does ask whenever you mention Sheepshead Bay.

I know a groovy guy that lives there now, for some light, peace and quiet, and cheap rent. (And his boyfriend *is* Russian.)
Sounds nice to live so close to the sea . . .

It really is. Second only to living right by the park, I guess.

I think the sea is better than the park.
The commute, not better. My friend stays home to write most of the time.
  • it smells very bad in sheepshead bay :p. parks are much better smelling hehe.
  • I know this thread is old, but I just joined and felt a need to reply

I grew up in sheepshead bay. Actually lived most of my life there(Knapp st mostly). Have been living in Bay Ridge for 4 yrs now.
Sheepshead Bay was a great place to grow up. Still a great place to live if you can afford it. Unfortunately with all the condos going up left and right its getting expensive, hence the move to bay ridge.
There is no place that I have found that is quite like it. No real neighborhoods like when I was growing up.
Parks/school yards for playing ball, and marine park nearby as well.
Fishing boats down in the bay itself. A close by and unusually clean beach in Manhattan Beach, just on the other side of the bay. Hell, we still go to stopnshop for our food shopping on occasion.
And while its true that it may not be the easiest place to get around without a car. I always liked the fact that its a trip to get to from the city. Even when I was working in the city.
I always had a sense of decompressing when commuting home after work. Sheepshead Bay was/is kinda like the suburbs, but not really. Parks and grass but, in most areas you could still walk to the corner and get a paper, or a quart of milk in the middle of the night.
I wish Bay Ridge had more of that neighborhood feeling I grew up with. I might stay a bit longer rather than looking to get out as we're doing now.

Yup, went to PS 194, Marine Park JHS and then my parents moved us to NEW JERSEY!!! To this day, my best memories are of Sheepshead Bay, it was the best place for a kid to grow up in the 60's. I lived right next door to Jimmy's Heroes on Sheepshead Bay Road. Still go back once in a while to visit, but it's not the same, however, it does smell the same, ah, the bay.
