i'd like to put my 2 cents in for Movers, not Shakers. They are based out of red hook, bk (across the street from Fairway) and they moved my 2 bd apt (which included a piano and a washer/dryer) for $700. They even honored that price when it turned out I had more boxes than I had initially anticipated.
They were totally solid and had me out of my old apt and into my new apt in no time at all.
They we incredibly careful and wrapped everything in pads and plastic (for the mattress) before moving it. Didn't break a thing...

oh and did i mention they are environmentally friendly?!!?!? -
Ooh I'm thrilled to hear good things about Rabbit. I'm using them tomorrow.
College Educated Movers came highly recommended to me - they moved friends of mine for cheap and did a great job, but weirdly, when I called them they gave a ridiculously high price quote. Then my friends just used them again yesterday and said they were wicked cheap. So, go figure. Maybe I just got the wrong person on the phone. But, it sounds like both Rabbit and College Educated Movers are good ones. -
I just heard shitty reviews for Movers, Not Shakers (great name) and I super bummed about that.
The Good Move's website is down, but I recommend them based on a move they did for me this time last year.
I am still on the hunt for a good and relatively inexpensive trustworthy mover if you have new/recent recommendations - let me know. Thanks! -

ANFIELD wrote: Big Apple have moved us a few times and have always been great. I think they're on 3rd or Nevins. Also, tipping for movers should be $5 per man per hour, with a few bucks extra depending on difficulty.
We used Big Apple and won't again. Our quote clearing included several things that the guys flat out refused to do (even though they were finishing several hours less than the quote). We had several pieces of furniture that needed to be disassembled in order to be moved to the room where we wanted them in the new place and they wouldn't do it. What burns me is that the quote included that, and should have been less without.
A month and a half in and and we still have all that crap crammed into a room where it doesn't belong
Also, they broke several things. Nothing destroyed but unfortunately also not really obvious until we unstacked boxes off of things. Broken shelf in a nice bookcase, etc. -
I loved College Educated Movers. Three different friends of mine recommended them and I saw a whole bunch of good reviews for them online. They quote you a flat rate, which is the most reasonable I could find. They come exactly when they say they will. They are the fastest and nicest movers I've ever used. And they are very careful.

It's best to email them the details of the move and someone will call you back within a few hours with a quote. -
Mod Note: For folks looking for recommendations, be wary of anyone who is a first-time poster, posting "Hey check out this fabulous mover". There are a lot of spambots at work on teh Internets...

When I move I always use Man with a Van Services. For a couple of years I used Craigslist to find vans. It still not a bad way to go. Many Man With a Van Services from Brooklyn and Manhattan list there frequently. The problem I found I found some good deals but the bad apples I used left a bad taste in my mouth. Now I use and recommend Van Stand er VanStand? How ever they phrase it their marketing is wonky but their service is smooth. They have a group of vans. The ones (usually artists) I have used have always been friendly and they all work at the same rate. I just fill out their form on their site yup you got it SPAM LINK and they send me a van. Anyway hope that works. Feels good supporting Brooklyn born company.

See Homeowner's post immediately above, and note that this first-time poster has a U.K. email address and a Macedonian IP address!

Hmm, my costumes do need quite a bit of support...
