The original Crazy Eddies was started by Eddie Antar and his father in '71 and opened in Brooklyn at Kings Highway and Coney Island Ave.
He was ripping the Corporation off and was being investigated by the U.S. Attorney, when he fled to Israel in '90, he cut a deal and returned to the U.S. in "93 and wound up in prison from '97 to '99.
Have a enjoyable and Happy Thanksgiving

Hey Hamilton. Do you know if the "screwees" ie: investors, creditors got any of their money back or did the "screwers" ie: the Antars got to bury it?

I remember going with my father to that Crazy Eddies on Coney Island Ave and buying a VCR when they had just come out.

One funny thing about those commercials, anyone around who grew up back then named Eddie was instantly called "Crazy Eddie" by all the other kids.. I know there were a few Crazy Eddies in my circle, lol...

before the Coney Island Ave store ,he had a place about two blocks in on Kings Highway,it was two stores combined into one and everything was in disarray.
Once he took the company public he really went crazy ,with other peoples money.
He was ordered by the courts to pay back over $50 million to stock holders, likes that going to happen..
Obamanut, I had taken my son there when he was young ,as he wanted a radio,he saw one in the showcase he liked for $75.00, I gave him $50.00 and instructed him to go over to the salesman and say it was his Mothers birthday and he wanted to buy that radio for her, as she had seen it and liked it,but he only had $50.00 and asked if he could have it for that amount as he wanted his Mother to be happy on her birthday..
The salesman bought the story and my son got his radio. -
Hello from Florida- Well I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving and ate everything in sight. It has been quite cool in Florida so far this late fall. 40's in the AM quite regular right now. We are running several degrees below normal for this time of year. I think we beat Crazy Eddie's to death enough. Now I am wondering if the following chains are still in Brooklyn or are they long gone. Davega's, Vim's, Times Square, Modell's, A&P, Cushman's Bakeries, Whelan Drugs, and another bakery chain that started with an "E". If anyone can shed any light on these I would appreciate it..

Hi Warren....I remember A & P ....and waiting by the register for my Mom to get her plaid stamps ....so I could get the doll carriage from the plaid stamps book ......and I also remember going with my Mom to Ebinger's Bakery on 15st above 5th ave......those were the days !!!!
Hope your feeling better !
a friend always ...

Davega went bankrupt in '63 and most of the stores were taken by Modell's
time square went out in '89 -
Ebingers Bakery.. the best blackout cake ever!
-
Thanks for the Ebingers name. As soon as I read it I recognized it. There used to be a lot of arguments about who preferred bakers between Cushmans & Ebingers. The most amazing thing about those days was not only were there bakeries all over, independent and chains, but there was home delivery by Dugans and Krugs, That was another great rivalry. As a kid too young for working papers I used to help out with deliveries on a Dugans electric truck. We are talking about the 40's and they could charge a delivery truck to run all day from 6am to 7pm and travel from Greenpoint to Park Slope and back after delivering all day! New technology now my foot!

Times Square Stores, jeez, I remember going to the one on 4th Ave in Sunset Park w/ my father back way back, even before I got my "JD Card," lol (do you know what that is?)
You're thinking about Ebinger's and Entenmann's. From what my father tells me, Entenmann's outsold old man Ebinger thanks to some help from the mob. -

Cushmans and Ebingers were in competition with each other with bakey stores in most neighborhoods. No I do not know what a "JD" card is. A draft card yes, a JD card no. Most guys in my era could not wait until their draft card came so they could legally buy a drink. :? :? -
This post brings back some fond memories...i grew up on 15th street between 2nd and 3rd ave....
-
Hi Jim,
Do not know what era you are from. I grew up on 12th Street between 5th & 6th Aves in the 30's up until 1960 when I got married and moved to NJ. Now I am retired and live in Florida. My Mother In law lives on 13th Street between 4th & 3rd aves. She is 93 and has been in the same house since she was 3 years old!! What schools did you attend? I went to PS 124, PS 40 and Manual. You did not have a long walk to Germains or the Globe Theater. Do you remember the 16th St Theater? Old Goat
-
How about Astoria Federal on 7th Ave around Union? You might be able to count Chase across the street since it's one big merger of Mani Hani and Chemical. But, I believe Astoria has been one owner for quite awhile.
-
Hi,,,Old Goat in FL-Warren!!!!!
I grew up on 15th Street in the 50's ..I graduated Holy Family in 1956 and then went to St Johns Prep..
My family owned a Scrap Buisness on 15th between 2nd and 3rd.... -
I remember the 16th street theater, also the Avon on 15th
-
remember the 3rd ave palace Bar on 16th and 3rd????
-
Hi Jim,
Well I am a little older then you but can relate to all you are saying. I remember Holy Family well. Going to school right next to it in PS124's also many of my friends went to Holy Family. Sometimes I would meet some of my friends on 14th St when they got out of Holy Family. The Nuns would yell at us "Get on the sidewalk and walk on this side of the street". I was not one of their students nor was I Catholic but I sure did what they told me to do. Plain fear! Besides if my Parents ever heard that I sassed any adult, much less a Nun, I would have been sorry for it. Yes there was the Avon but it and the Prospect were on 9th St.There also was the Sanders, Minerva and 16th street Theater. The Globe was on 15th St just above 5th Ave.We were very lucky to have all those theaters so close to home. When it came to bars I usually went to Murphy's on 5th Ave between 13th & 14th St. Years before that my father went to Mike Goldens on 13th and 5th. I worked after school and on Saturdays at the Palace meat market across from Germains on 5th Ave. 8) 8) -

the Avon went from family fare to XXX movies and eventually the property was sold to McDonald's in the '70s.
There was an uproar in the community, as the neighborhood was concerned about the type of people McDonalds would draw.
Only in the Slope ,would porno be more desirable then burgers -

No "Bad" Jim. We are just reminiscing about the past and no marks are being given for accuracy! During WWII we used to bring newspapers to a place on 15th Street between 2nd & 3rd. We got paid 40cents or so a hundred pounds and it made for good spending money. Was your family in that business then?
Hey Hamilton, maybe they should have had the McD's workers dressed in Hooters outfits. Kill two birds with one stone! By the way. Do you or anybody else out there remember Bickford's Cafeteria on 9th St just above 5th. It was open 24 hours a day. I had many a Saturday AM breakfast there after the bars closed at 3AM. I figured that the eggs, sausage and English Muffin helped absorb the booze.

RE:Bickfords
I went there a few times with my brother in law to-be and of course it was after the last call at some of the local establishments.
The had some characters and many fights there.
One night a junkie was sitting next to me at the counter and was trying to eat his eggs, which wound up in his shirt pocket or on his t-shirt. -
There was a thread posted today on the Park Slope Message Board showing Stavenhagen's as a food pawn shop
It should bring back some memories -
Hamilton wrote: RE:Bickfords
Hamilton, we used to call the goings on at Bickford's the 4am floor show. Sometimes a guy would stand up on a table and sing to the top of his lungs. He was not bad either. Got a great round of applause. Since everyone (or almost everyone) in there was plastered they thought he was great and told him he should be in the Metropolitan Opera. Yea there were some fights but seldom bad enough to call the cops. The people who worked there just kicked their asses out on 9th Street and told them to get lost!

Jim Vaccaro, I think your Father clipped me out of a quarter once!! Just kidding but that is something for two guys from Brooklyn talking about things that happened over 60 years ago! It was a real game. We would always have a few WET papers in the middle of the pile but the guys in your family business were wise to us and would catch us and take off a few cents for it. Bringing the piles of papers down from 12th St between 5th and 6th Aves on our wagons was something to behold. It was one brothers job to pull and the other two to keep the papers from falling out.
Only two of us left now but we both remember the "Paper Runs" well. 8) -

No Suzie, I am afraid not. Remember when I left Brooklyn the McD,s was still the Avon Theater. The only bar I went to regularly was Murphy's on 5th Ave between 13th & 14th St. Only went on Friday nights. Most Saturday nights I had dates and was at dances, parties etc:.There were several bars on 5th between 9th St & 8th St. White House, Roundtown etc:. There was also a bowling alley and a great Pizza place in that block> -
Dont worry Warren ...Ill find someone we both know ???? LOL
What about the Teller at the Greater New York savings Bank 9st & 5th ave???
Mr. Queen or Ed Glynn ???
Howdy, Stranger!
