Sugarcane - so good
So I finally went to Sugarcane last night after a year of passing it and thinking it looked good and I should try it. Man, I was not disappointed at all. We got jerk chicken wings for an appetizer and they were ridiculous - the meat was like totally falling off the bone and stuff, and it came with a mango mayonnaise you could dip it into, which I support, because I'm all for dipping things in mayonnaise.
I had the chinese fried chicken. It was awesome but the portions were so big (and I had eaten so many jerk chicken wings) that I couldn't come close to finishing it. The girlfriend had some sort of salmon that she said was really good but I didn't really pay attention because I don't like fish. Sides were good, too - I found the macaroni and cheese to be much better than that at the Islands (though there's a price range / homeyness difference, obviously).
We also had big fruity beverages and those were delicious as well, though expensive and yielding a poor price / drunk ratio.
Service was very friendly, albeit slow, though we were in no rush and the place was pretty packed.

YAY. I love when the portions are big enough for you to have leftovers for another meal! Will have to check it out!

My wife and her friend go to Sugarcane every couple of weeks - she loves it. I haven't been yet but am going next week with them.
We passed it last night at around 6:30Pm and it was packed - great diverse crowd too. -
Subject: funny story about the owner
last summer while on vacation in san francisco my girl friend and i signed up for a van tour of sonoma county and a few vineyards up there. it was basically us and about 5 other couples from all over the country. so we stop at this one place and all sit down around this large picnic table to sample wines from one of the vineyards , we start talking amongst our selves and turns one of the other couples is from brooklyn as well and from prospect heights and lives 3 blocks from me and the women is the head chef at sugar cane.

Subject: ruined the experience
I'd been to Sugarcane a few times for drinks, and the food always smelled delicious so I finally went back for dinner w/my bf a couple weeks ago. We were seated at one of the tables along the wall with banquette-type seats. The food was great, and the portions were huge, but while waiting for the check the unthinkable happended - a giant cockroach crawled on me from the banquette! I have never been so utterly disgusted. What's worse is that as we gathered our belongings to leave we spotted another one running along the banquette. Needless to say, my experience there was completely ruined & I can never set foot in there again, whether or not they ever get their pest problem under control! -
Subject: ugh.... i hear you
similar thing happened to me at that big spanish place " el jaguar de something" the one on flatbush right next to the Q train station. i used to go in there every once in a while for a cubin sandwich and then one day as i was waiting at the counter for my order i was looking around and i saw a cockroach the size of a cell phone walk across there disgusting illuminated sign above the cash register.
haven't been back since.
is it just me or would that location be perfect for a jamba juice?
haha just kidding
or am i :?: -

You could have insisted it be caught and served... they're a Thai delicacy. Deep-fried.

Roaches and restaurants go pretty much hand in hand, don't they? Some restaurants are probably just better at concealing the problem than others.
