Reviving this thread to check in on NooNa.
SO
I was just there. It was packed. The kitchen was having some pretty serious problems . . . and the bartender (tall, glasses, light hair) was a bit of a tool, both to us and to his coworkers. He was weirdly dismissive of all the beers (Korean beer *is* super light dude -- so you can drink tons of it with your spicy food . .. ) but didn't pick up on the fact they have that nice Japanese craft beer with the owl logo. what.a.dork. I didn't find out they had a cocktail menu until I was at a table. Whatever dude.
Anyway, the seafood pa jung was great, and the mandoo were nice. The entrees slipped from the last time we were there, bummer. I don't know what happened to the soondubu, but it sucked. Watery, little flavor, way too much soft tofu, no spice although I ordered it spicey. I love soondubu, and I liked their version before. phooey. BiBimBop in the hot stone had slipped too. The pork bulgogi was delicious - tender and spicy. Some other sweet sour pork thing was like bad Chinese . . . sweet and gloop enrobed dried-out pork nuggets. It's on the rice menu, beware.
The non-bartending staff was really nice, but the kitchen was cocking it all up -- the dishes took a long time and there was a 20 minute lag between some people's entrees arriving (compared to the rest of the table). The waitress did all she could, and took stuff off the bill. We left her a big tip.
We left thinking we'd stick to Flushing or 32nd St for awhile.
I sooo want that place to be good. Did I hit an off night? -

sounds that way to me. everything i've had there has been wonderful, and while i've had a couple of slightly spacey employees, certainly not bad ones.

and the kitchen has my love for making a delicious substitution at my request despite the very clear "no substitution policy" printed on their menu.
the only complaint i have is that they played the same two songs almost the whole time we were there last time. it was the postal service and something else, on repeat. but it was kind of funny, and they were busy, and we wanted to see how long it would take them to notice. it was a little like the restaurant itself was going through a bad breakup or one of those other traumas that lead you to listening to the same song 6 or 7 hundred times because you JUST NEED IT RIGHT NOW, OKAY?? -
I haven't been there in a while, but I've ordered takeout a few times and while it wasn't Flushing level, it was better than you described. I really hope their soon dubu hasn't slid permanently, 'cause I love that dish! Try the kimchee chigae next time- it was great last time I ordered it.
-
oh my.
on one hand, I'm psyched that they have that owl rice beer- that's really my favorite beer ever. it's delicious and easy to drink.
but I'm concerned about the quality of soon dubu. it was good, but not outstanding last time I was there. this is my favorite korean dish (I eat it almost any time I eat korean food unless I'm feeling super-duper meaty) and something I think of as comfort food. perhaps I'll lunch there today. are they open on mondays? -
Hey Pitu i was at noo na the night that you are describing, apparently you have no clue of what a kitchen goes through when a big party like yours comes in,to begin with you were like 25 people. A kitchen like noo na only employs 2 cooks, they have not only coock all your 20 appetizers, but they also have to cook food for the rest of the clientelle, remember you are not the only person dining in the restaurant, they have to cook their take out orders and their deliveries, so what if your food took longer, don't be a cry baby if you really want to be treated like a king then go to Korea town where they have a satff of at 15 in their kitchens, dont try to be a smart ass, you ate didn't you???So stop critisizing just be glad that you have a decent koren restaurant in the hood other wise spend 2 hours of travel and go to queens!!!!

I think pitu would have mentioned in her post if she were part of a party of 25. -
Yeah i guess he failed to mention that!!!!
-

I think you're confusing her with someone else. -
you might be right but the whole point is that the restaurant was packed to the gills there was a party of about 25 plus everyone else, if she has no patience then go to another place where is not as packed, we have all been through the samething before..We are not starving people in Ethopia so what if your food took longer just remember that you are lucky that you are eating, the restaurant was packed and it is understandable if food takes longer!!!!

a) tone it down.
b) Ethiopia
c) if a restaurant has seats for people, it should be able to handle those people. if they're having a slammed night and just can't get it together, management needs to step in and hand out some free cocktails or starters and apologize. people PAY MONEY to eat out. when a place has a track record of good service and then suddenly fails, it's disconcerting and upsetting. people return to restaurants to have the same good experience they had last time they were there, not to have a totally shitty experience that they have to pay for. -
Wait... there's an Ethiopian restaurant in PH?
-
That would be awesome.
-
Especially since I'm starving right now.
-
I find that the food type I crave about as often as Korean food, but can only indulge rarely (b.c. of the lack of restaurants and the necessity of having someone else with you to eat it given the huge portions) is Ethiopian food. so delish! I sometimes try to substitute/satisfy with Indian food, but that only works in London. subsitution also only works with Bangladeshi food. are there Bangladeshi restaurants in nyc and will they make the top of my head levitate through the hotness of their food?
-
wow! poopy, dude (edit: who I will guess is also our friend called dingleberry, the aspiring restaurateur) are you tall, with glasses and light hair? You have a lot to learn about restaurants and hospitality. Don't be an ass to those nice women you work with!

Like I said, the place *was* packed. Primetime weekend night, that should be expected. There was no table for 25 - I missed banquet night! But if they want to seat 50 places, they gotta cook for 50 diners - and if the food is delicious when it comes out, everybody is happy. -
There's a strong rumor of an Ethiopian place coming to lower Slopeland. And a French-Moroccan opening on Fifth Ave where the ridiculously upscale yet barely merchandised deli/cafe opened and shut. (I think the xstreet is Lincoln.)
-
I believe there is a Bengi place or two on CIA. I know I've seen one Church Street and another on Varick in Tribeca. The ones on CIA should give you the ole "lighter fluid is coing out of my ass" feeling
-
Aren't a lot of the Indian restaurants actually run by Bangladeshis? I had heard that, but I have no independent confirmation.

no clue. but if so, they're toning it down several notches. and not cooking Bangladeshi food. I have dreams about this amazing lamb dish I had a few years ago. there's nothing like it on any Indian menu I've seen. -
Looks like Astoria/JHeights is the place to be . . . there's some around MacDonald Ave and Church, but I never ate there

and the Spicy Mina place worshiped and fought over on Chowhound... Bangladesi, no? -

No. We're a group of neighbors that tell each other about our experiences in the neighborhood. Why is that so difficult for you to understand? -
it really pisses me off that everyone in this board is always complaining, if this neighborhood has crappy restaurant, bad schools, terrible bars, shootings, muggings, racist people, crappy french food, terrible mexican food, thai food that makes you fart. then why are you people living here?Go back to the city the mid west or wherever you came from i bet it was better there!!!!

One might say the same thing about your participation on this board. If everyone here annoys you so much, why don't you go elsewhere? -
hahahahahahahhahaah!!!!!

most of the ones on east sixth street used to be bengali and/or bangladeshi, but i believe it has diversified a bit in the last few years. -

srsly -
an awful lot of indian restaurants are run by bengalis and bangladeshis, but the food tends toward punjabi, in my understanding. maybe because northern india and (west) pakistan have more of a tradition of eating meat?
-
and poopydingle, i love noo na. but you make me not want to. cool it.
