Thank you all! I appreciate the suggestions. Being relatively new to the area, I want to know the best places to eat. And it looks like I will not be disappointed.
Brooklyn Jay, I already have been reading your blog for awhile now, and I love it and the reviews of the restaurants. It has been my go to guide for reviews! It is very helpful and informative. -
Mojitos
that italian spot in the old drug store...I can't remember the name -

It's actually not bad, but... there are so many better restaurants nearby that I never go.

You should check out:

She has a great map (although sometimes it takes a while to load). -
Maggie Brown's
love the food. love the prices. love the ambiance. love the spicy margarita. -
Veliis on Fulton is my new favorite place to eat out. It's only a couple steps from the highly overrated Night of the Cookers and much better. I've been a number of times since my first meal there last spring. I've never been disappointed. The food is fantastic and the staff is very warm and accomodating. The prices are very reasonable especially considering the larger portion sizes.

^^^ good name, young hovacraft.

BocaSoul on Fulton between Waverly and Vanderbilt is a small quaint place with great food. Give it a try...

Hmm, I stopped going there right around last spring. I wonder if they got it together, b/c I was severely disappointed 3-4 times in a row, after initially liking the place. What have you ordered that's good? -
Thank you, all. I will definitely be checking out some new places. Worth trying anything once for myself I think.

I hereby rescind my recommendation for Veliis. I've eaten there twice since I posted that comment and each time was more disappointing. I won't be returning. Lulu on Dekalb will be getting my business and kudos from now on.

Yeah, that mirrors my experience. It's really gone downhill fast, and people have noticed. Walked by last Friday night during prime eating hours and there wasn't a soul in there. I feel sympathetic, but they brought it on themselves. -

Do we know what caused the decline over there? -
Yeah, we ate at Veiis one friday night, and it was empty when we walked in. More people came in later, but I was surprised. My food was very good, not huge portions and good prices. However, the service was a little 'European,' which is not the worst thing in the world (others might say 'slow'), but how can you not be attentive when there is only one couple in your whole restaurant!
The steak I ordered was very good, but was not piping hot or anything. I attributed this to it sitting on the counter for a little while before I received it. Another diner actually sent her steak back to be warmed up!
They are very nice there, and the food is good, but the service is too laid back. -
I have to disagree about June. I've eaten there twice and have no desire to ever go back. It just doesn't work for me.
We like Olea, LouLou, Maggie Brown, Pequena, Cafe Lafayette, and Sushi D. -
Love:
Veliis
Graziellas
Zaytoons
Chez Oscar
Not mad at:
Olea
Scopello
Sushi D
Maggie Brown
Smoke Joint (been there once, we'll see how it goes)
Pequena
Madiba
Luz
Mojitos
Black Iris
Rice
Lulus
Cafe Lafayette
Restaurant New Orleans (is this the name? next to Brooklyn Moon)
Habana Outpost
June
Mad at with reasons:
Red Bamboo - worst service experience ever. liked the food though.
Gia - not sure if its still open, but thought it was too expensive for what you got
Locanda... - I know people rave, but I consider the cuisine an "acquired taste" and find most of the dishes aren't my thing.
Night of the Cookers - Mediocre food at moderate prices
One Greene Sushi - mediocre food at more than moderate prices
All pizza in the neighborhood except Graziellas, and Not Rays if you really need delivery - including Marios, S&S, Pipitones, Luv-N-Oven - have (unfortunately) tried them all. -
I'm going to be a total snob and say that Locanda Vini e Olii is not an acquired taste, as previous poster opined, rather it is really one of the few high end quality food establishments in FG/Clinton Hill. Invariably, people who have told me they don't like it rank ordinary (yes tasty, but everyday food) places as their favorites (e.g. Chez Oskar, Zaytoons). I love a burger, meguez sausage or some moules frites as much as the next guy, but Locanda is a different level of food altogether.

Hey, how come no-one's mentioned Los Politos III? Excellent brunch, kick-ass cocktails!
I haven't eaten anything there that I wouldn't order again.
Also, of course, Sushi D up on the corner. -
I've been to Los Pollitos II on 5th Avenue and was completely disappointed. I thought their food was bland and average. So, you can imagine that I've had no desire to visit Los Pollitos III!
I'd like to give Madiba a second chance, though. The first and only time I've gone, I thought it was super overpriced and didn't particularly enjoy the flavors. It's possible I'm just not a fan of South African food, but I'd like to have another visit to determine exactly what the deal is. -
Try the special fish (I think it's always the same) at Madiba's. IMO it's the best thing on the menu, and it's quite good.

I like Los Pollitos III, but it's not my favorite restaurant.

Their margaritas are amazing though. I love their chicken mole too.
