wait till you see the place very nice decor -
I've been ordering more often from Kinara II, the Indian place on Myrtle. The food is great! I even order fish dishes from there without fear.
It has actually improved since it first opened, when I found it too greasy. Now I love it. -

I just tried june for brunch last weekend and enjoyed it very much.
We like Olea, LouLou, Maggie Brown, Pequena, Cafe Lafayette, and Sushi D. -

How's the delivery service been? I ordered twice and once took about 90 mins. :x

Tolerable:
Night of Cookers
Miz Ruthies (DeKalb Avenue location)
Chez Oskar
Buff Patty (good Carribean)
N'Orleans Restaurant - Fulton Street
Dessert: Bakery (Cake man Raven??) Pineapple Coconut cake ...a dream!
Won't go back to:
Chez Lola
Maggie Browns...omg! no!
Pillow
Japanese on Myrtle (Yashimoko??)
I don't eat out that much, don't particularly like what goes on behind closed doors at restaurants. -

the delivery's been really fast, actually. We're on Clinton at fulton and it maybe takes 45 minutes. Wierd that it took them so long to get to you, was the food at least hot? -
I ate at Locanda Vini e Olii last night and absolutely loved it. The service was attentive and the food was delicious. We started with the salmon tartar crostini which was marinated three ways. We also had the spelt salad with tuna that was seasoned just right. The dishes were quite substantial even though I'd read that their servings were small. As an entree I had the sea bass in parchmant paper that was so flavorful and light...heaven!
I highly recommend this place. -
I have never had anything short of terrible service at Chez Oscar anytime I've sat at a table and I like to think that I'm pretty patient and forgiving being a server myself. The staff isn't rude, but seemingly have no idea how to wait tables. Twice I've watched the waitress not even put in our drink orders for close to 10 minutes. That is just one example of the tons of things that are wrong EVERYTIME I sit at a table. If I feel the need to go there (which is pretty infrequent, I'd rather take the train to one of the million other French bistros in Brooklyn and actually get good service) I sit at the bar. I've never had anything, but good service sitting at the bar. The food is decent, but nothing spectacular. If I didn't live nearby I would never go there.

Thanks for all the info. It is great to have all the recommendations.

Martino is always a fun, friendly place to visit. The food's good if not great but the warmth of the owners always makes up for whatever else they're lacking.
Most of the places in FG/CH are either overpriced and overly 'thematic' or just plain bad and unappealing on almost every level. Seems to be a dearth of easy, good quality restaurants staffed by competent and attentive workers. When we lived in the E Vill we could eat out at any number of places for $20 a head and have a great meal. That's a real challenge in this 'hood.
My scorecard:
Chez Oscar/Lola- mediocre food, bad service.
Ici- Small portions, deplorable service, way overpriced.
Bonita- Good food, great service, fun vibe
Maggie Brown's- Mediocre and overcomplicated entrees, good drinks, abyssmal service
Thai 101- Good Food, good service, good prices
Hall St Diners- What's up with closing so early?
Graziellas- A good choice, even if the waitstaff can be a touch dense.
Red Bamboo- Irritating vibe- lighten up. Food was OK, but not memorable.
Olea-Bad across the board. Feel bad saying it- the owner seems so earnest - but yeah, bad.
Los Pollitos-mostly takeout experience, but good food!
Mojito-Food's passable, but my one experience dining in (v takeout) was probably the worst service I'd ever recieved anywhere including the downtown Brooklyn DMV. Unbelieveable. I left feeling like I'd been 'punk'd".
Luz- like Bonita, sets what I'd hope will someday become the standard for dining around here.
Black Iris-good food, cheap; certainly not a destination, but hard to find fault with.
Choice- good food, but service is so bad it's almost inconcievable. The staff seems to have what could only be described as a prejudice against good service.
OK- that's it for me. -

I'm very surprised to hear you're so unhappy with the restaurants in FG/CH. In two years my girlfriend and I have had almost nothing but good experiences.
Oh well... -
Thai 101 - I find the food hit or miss
Sushi Okdol- liked it years ago but seemed to go down hill and haven't been there in a while
Yamashiro- I liked it and they offer deep fried rolls if you don't like raw fish
Zaytoons- good but salads are always wilted/ sub par
Black Iris- liked better than Zaytoons but dining in is sub par (if you can't serve on dinnerware that isn't old/broken you should switch to paper)
Mojito- churrasco de pollo is good. they always mess up order somehow
Politos III- decent tamale but steak burrito was bland
Castros- better burrito than Politos but also gassier
Liberty Pizza- offers falafel, gyros and greek salad as well as traditional pizza fare
New Grace Kitchen - typical cheap chinese fare, also serves frenchfries
Sapolo - eaten there once and thought nothing special of it -
T. Beisl is getting overlooked on this board. Y'all should do yourselves a favor and go get some goulash and what not over there. It's a gem of a local spot.

Haven't been to June for brunch. Last time I ate dinner there, the vibe was odd. On a weekend night, we were almost the only people in there, yet it still took 5 or 10 minutes for us to get drinks. Someone ordered mussels or scallops (memory escapes me now) and the waiter advised us he'd have to go check with the kitchen to see if they were "still OK to serve." Yum! June's on my walk to/from work, so I go by there every day during dinner hours, and it always looks deserted- a long row of empty tables with flickering candles. Are they circling the drain? I seem to remember that they used to draw large crowds.
I'm quite partial to the Zaytoons chicken kabab sandwich and spinach/cheese pie. Also, love the mac & cheese and greens at the Smoke Joint. The decor at 67 Burger leaves quite a bit to be desired, but when I went there last Saturday, the staff was incredibly pleasant and the food ably scratched the grease/salt/sugar itch. We ordered: 1 bacon cheeseburger; 1 chicken sandwich; 1 order spicy fries; 1 Bass draft; 1 glass of seltzer; and 1 beer milkshake. Grand total= $30. Not bad. -
I've eaten at Thomas Beisl twice and wasn't terribly impressed either time. I don't know what it is, exactly, but I've felt both times that I was paying too much for something completely average.

I gave up on Locanda Vini e Olii after one visit. The wait staff brings desserts to the tables so that diners could choose. At the table next to us the guests all stuck their fingers in the dishes when the waiter went to attend to another table.
Other than that the food was good but I think overrated.
For Indian Kinara II is actually better than Amin although Amin has the nicer place. -
Subject: Amin -- Am out
I would cross the street to avoid Amin. The food is disgraceful. Kinara, while not fabulous, is at least identifiably Indian. -

Castro, I am upset with you. I spent the past 5 minutes reviewing all the posts and was excited that I would be the first to mention Le Toukouleur ( www.letoukouleur.com/)...than, there was your post...lol. I agree, the food is FABULOUS!!! Not to mention the hospitality was so welcoming and the interior very warm and inviting. This was a true find. They are generally not opened for lunch, but they do have a brunch on the weekends.
wait till you see the place very nice decor
OT- Thanks board for listing all your favorites. I'm trying to keep track of the "hot spots" in bed-stuy for my own "bed-stuy" focused web. missed the Bistro, so thanks for that board. -

Amin's Chicken Tandori with mango chutney is always delicious as far as I'm concerned. We usually get it delivered. I havent had it for a few months though. -
I totally agree with bagus. Amin is the worst Indian food I've had anywhere in New York City. If you like bland sauces (that are likely not homemade) and chicken meat that tastes like styrofoam, go for it.
I guess it has value in terms of sheer quantity. -

I think Brooks Valley Cafe and Le toukouleur are the two best of the eateries discussed.temtew wrote: Even though i've only been once, i would recommend Brook's Valley on Tompkins and Hancock. Had dinner there with a friend last weekend- the food was plentiful, fresh and delicious and our bill was only $30!! Not to mention I ended up taking half my chicken roti home for lunch the next day.
Started off with the Jerk Shrimp appetizer, 4 bamboo shrimp over a good sized salad, main course was the above-mentioned roti (which was a little mildly spiced for my taste, but really good) with perfect greens and plantains. I forget which soup my friend had, but he had the Jerk Chicken salad- both were great.
It is BYOB, wish i had known ahead of time and brought wine- a very leisurely, enjoyable experience all-around. Can't wait to go back! -
i've heard of le toukouleur but have never tried it. a good friend got royally screwed by what he says is the very selfish/shady owner, so i hesitate to support an establishment run like that. BUT i love food, so we'll see. :-)
