  • LeffertsGirl, I agree. I am not sure what kind of story would persuade me to avoid a place in an area in need of a variety of restaurants. I would go for myself and check it out. See what I think of the place.

I will add these to my list.
  • i realize now that i shouldn't have said anything. though i've heard nothing but good things about the food and the restaurant in general (and wouldn't fault anyone for enjoying a great new neighborhood restaurant), i'm sure you can understand my choice to be loyal to my good friend who was treated unfairly in business dealings with the restaurant's owner. i'm sure it's my loss because it sounds like a great place!

Your comment is absolutely nonsense and has no place in any critique
  • We had a get together at Toukouleur and they gave us food and drinks on the house we never would get anywhere else, and we tried to pay and they refused. All this after five months in business.Leo
  • Leo, I want a comped party. ;)

Any good vegetarian suggestions? I notice a lot of places do not seem to have too many options (some more than others). I like to keep my options open. :)
  • Well, of course there's Red Bamboo on DeKalb.
  • I recommend Brook's Valley, the owner does not eat meat, and the big secret there is the fact that they use organic ingredients in many dishes. They also use healthy oils in certain selections. The oatmeal is organic for brunch on weekends.
  • Pikesville wrote: Haven't been to June for brunch. Last time I ate dinner there, the vibe was odd. On a weekend night, we were almost the only people in there, yet it still took 5 or 10 minutes for us to get drinks. Someone ordered mussels or scallops (memory escapes me now) and the waiter advised us he'd have to go check with the kitchen to see if they were "still OK to serve." Yum! June's on my walk to/from work, so I go by there every day during dinner hours, and it always looks deserted- a long row of empty tables with flickering candles. Are they circling the drain? I seem to remember that they used to draw large crowds.
    Hmmm....

  • oh no! but i loved june!

It's back... and empty as usual. They had candles on the vacant outdoor tables this evening.

    Glad to hear it's reopened.

We've always had a good experience there whenever we've gone. I'll admit that there were times when things were a bit slow but the food was good and I found the service to be pleasant and professional.
  • After being rushed out the door at other restaurants recently, I would almost welcome some slower service!

Glad to see june is back. I am still a Cafe Martino lover, but I do want to try them all. :D
  • Did you guys know brooks valley makes a great vegan sweet potato pie? :D
  • just recently had dinner at june. gosh, i love that place. :) the veggie burger is to die for!

Glad to hear you had a good meal there. It looks like their business has picked up a little in the past few weeks, especially the outdoor tables.

Does anyone know what's going on with Madiba? I went by there on Tuesday (I think) and noted two signs in the window: (1) a health department closure notice; and (2) a sign (presumably) posted by the restaurant stating it would be closed for a few days because of a plumbing problem. It was still shuttered last night.
  • i saw the signs at madiba today, too. one says they will be closed for two days, but it's dated 5/28 or 29 so i guess it's taking a bit longer than planned. hope they open up soon...
  • has anyone been to a restaurant on dekalb that i think is called "two steps down"? i pass it fairly often and keep meaning to ask folks on this board about it. anyone have an experience they could share?

Glad you discovered "Le Touk", make sure you try the crab cakes. Have you tried "Folukie" also on Bedford?
  • I ate at june on Sunday. Food was good, service a bit slow. Place was fairly busy. Overall not a bad experience. We last ate their two years ago and had a decent meal then too.
  • The service at June is just atrocious! I went there on Saturday night and there were a grand total of about 5 people there. I asked the bartendar if I could sit outside, he said sure that he'd send someone out. After 15-20 minutes, I went in and reminded him I was out there and still waiting and few minutes later someone finally came. Then I waited another 15 or so minutes for my cocktail to arrive. Come on!! It was ridiculous. I was so looking forward to enjoying a beautiful summer night outside with a cocktail and the service just ruined the whole good vibe I had. I ate there once a number of months ago and it was very mediocre and I can't see any reason to eat there with all the other options. I thought just going for a drink was a good alternative but it turned out not to be. Considering how empty that place always is I think (and hope) that it will close down and something take that great spot.
  • Has anyone ever eaten at Joloff, African place on Fulton by Clinton? Any good?
  • I have been in the neighborhood a long time and the restaurant/delivery situation is still difficult. It was difficult before due to limited options particularly on delivery. Now there are many very mediocre and/or overpriced options. I do not eat meat. Only fish and vegetables. Here are my opinions:

Luz: I actually consider this to be the best restaurant in the neighborhood if you feel like spending a little it is actually worth it. The presentation is beautiful. i just can't stand the crowd so I get delivery often or go at off hours.

Catros: The old standby still reigns supreme. You can't beat the breakfast specials and the $8 delivery minimum. I am a big fan of the chicano breakfast burrito when I have a hangover. Also the enchiladas and the chile relleno sandwich.

Myrtle Thai:very decent but not amazing thai. I have only gotten delivery. Much better than thai 101. I don't deal with thai 101.

Yummy Yummy: The best Chinese delivery in the hood. They have quite an assortment of tofu dishes and brown rice too. My favorite is Kung Pao Tofu.

Buff Patty: Real decent Jamaican food. I go there and get take out because delivery takes FOREVER.

Kinaras: Decent Indian food. I mostly get chana shag and I got malai koftas which is how I judge and Indian restaurant and they were good. I had fish from there and it was good too. Amin is not an option.

Chez Lola: The only thing I like is the spicy salmon burger and its really really good if you eat it there but not too good if you get it delivered. The garden is cool.

There is no restaurant on DeKalb that I like.

    Pequena/Olea/Maggie Brown: GARBAGE

Night of the Cookers: Ridiculously overpriced soul food. I would rather get it from Ruthies or Duncans or Fish & Crustaceans

New Orleans Restaurant: WORSE THAN GARBAGE

Duncans Fish Market: Good fish market and good takeout. You can get your whiting here for $3 or $4 instead of 20 like night of the cookers.

    Red Bamboo: GARBAGE

Graziellas: I like their fennel salad and a few other interesting vegetable dishes they have. I dislike that they have a $20 minimum for delivery.

67 Burger: Decent and not expensive. they make their own veggie burgers and have 4 kinds or something. Its good to have a reasonably priced option in the neighborhood

Sushi:I have been ordering from Sushi Tatsu on Flatbush for years. Really good and cheap. I was just informed they opened a second one somewhere in the clinton hill/bed stuy area called sushi tatsu 2. all the other sushi spots around here are rip offs.

Kush: If I want to actually go out to a restaurant I love this place. Real nice atmosphere in the garden. They have delicious seafood mafe and salmon and their house salad is amazing. Don't sleep on this place.

Black Iris: Passable middle eastern. Comes in handy if you are in a hurry and want something cheap. I like their falafel made with fava beans and the sandwich is rolled like a burrito. Lentil soup and spinach pie nice too.

There is a halal buffet on fulton near Bedford, International something the awning has all these flags on it. It is pristenely clean and they have 2 buffets, one meat and one veg. Really amazing and cheap food.

Alis Roti Shop: The best rotis/doubles in the area!!!

Other than these places, i end up ordering from outside the neighborhood. Soul Spot on Atlantic delivers to Fort Greene. The best soul food and the only place whose veggies don't have meat. Theres an Indian called Joy on Flatbush thats pretty good but since Kinara opened I deal with them. Also Veggie Palate on Flatbush. Chinese vegetarian way better and cheaper than red bamboo and a similar style.

I gotta go check these places on Bedford. Also Cafe Martino. I haven't yet.
What else is new? TELL ME PLEASE!!!

    AGREED

NEVER BEEN. Not big on Mex food.

Myrtle Thai:very decent but not amazing thai. I have only gotten delivery. Much better than thai 101. I don't deal with thai 101.
REVERSE. I love the Basil fried rice and curry puffs at Thai 101. Myrtle Thai feels like it isnt clean, if that makes sense.

Yummy Yummy: The best Chinese delivery in the hood. They have quite an assortment of tofu dishes and brown rice too. My favorite is Kung Pao Tofu.
WHERE ARE THEY? They are lucky Kum Kau doesnt deliver!

Buff Patty: Real decent Jamaican food. I go there and get take out because delivery takes FOREVER.
AGREED. Delivery is not their strongest point.

Kinaras: Decent Indian food. I mostly get chana shag and I got malai koftas which is how I judge and Indian restaurant and they were good. I had fish from there and it was good too. Amin is not an option.
NEVER BEEN, but Amin has been good to me, although I have only done delivery. Tandori chicken! yum.

Chez Lola: The only thing I like is the spicy salmon burger and its really really good if you eat it there but not too good if you get it delivered. The garden is cool.
I LOVE THIS PLACE. Pity I cook so much at home, otherwise they would see me more. Never had delivery though.

    Pequena/Olea/Maggie Brown: GARBAGE
AGREED. Maggie Brown is on Myrtle, but I am not too fond of it either. I've tried to like it b/c it's close by. Olea should be called Oh dear, as in overrated! Never been to Pequena - again I'm not a Mexican food fan.

Night of the Cookers: Ridiculously overpriced soul food. I would rather get it from Ruthies or Duncans or Fish & Crustaceans
DISAGREE. I've had quite a few good times there.

New Orleans Restaurant: WORSE THAN GARBAGE
    NEVER BEEN

    Red Bamboo: GARBAGE
DISAGREE. Tasty food, and I'm not a vegetarian. Smooth chocolate apple martini too.

Graziellas: I like their fennel salad and a few other interesting vegetable dishes they have. I dislike that they have a $20 minimum for delivery.
NOT A BIG FAN. They could do with some competition, which I hear they will soon get from Myrtle ave.

67 Burger: Decent and not expensive. they make their own veggie burgers and have 4 kinds or something. Its good to have a reasonably priced option in the neighborhood
AGREED. I've had good burgers there several times. Good addition to the nabe.

Sushi:I have been ordering from Sushi Tatsu on Flatbush for years. Really good and cheap. I was just informed they opened a second one somewhere in the clinton hill/bed stuy area called sushi tatsu 2. all the other sushi spots around here are rip offs.
NEVER BEEN. I like my Sushi well done! lol

Kush: If I want to actually go out to a restaurant I love this place. Real nice atmosphere in the garden. They have delicious seafood mafe and salmon and their house salad is amazing. Don't sleep on this place.
    AGREED. Very good place.

NEVER BEEN. I have had good delivery from Zaytoons on myrtle though.

epoca is nice. me and my wife had a nice meal there. what a difference ownership, design, etc can make on a place.
  • where on fulton is epoca?

it is in the place where Velis was. Not sure what the cross streets are.

Yummy Yummy is on Myrtle by Waverly. Its not a spot to go eat at. Delivery. I love Kum Kau too but its far from me I am by the park.

Night of the Cookers is cool to check the jazz and have drinks I just think the food is overpriced.

Red Bamboo is just a trendy place with no nutritional value. TVP is not really a healthy food choice and there entire menu is based around it. Yes it is nice tasting tvp but it is still tvp.

Alis is on Fulton right before Nostrand.
  • So I shouldn't be running over to June this weekend? Where should I go this weekend or asap? I recommend Sugarcane, Le Toukouleur, Brooks Valley and yes Ali's is a good bet for roti but he could renovate it's a dump.
