ate there this morning very tasty sandwishes and the prices are really affordable

My sister lives in the Bed-Stuy/Clinton Hill area, and without a doubt restaurants are emerging from the area. I've been to a couple places already.

For a "fancy" but cheap (not too cheap, meaning fast food, affordable prices) I would recommend Le Toukouleur Restaurant, which is located on Bedford && Quincy. The food there is to die for, with a friendly meadow calm enviroment. Though the lights tend to be too dim.

For a "halal" restaurant, with not so bad prices and good food, I would recommend Foulkies on Bedford and Monroe, I believe. Though it's a small place, and could have better service.

There is also Kush, located on Fulton and Grand, and many restaurants emerging from such a cultural location.

    And so does "annoyed."
  • Bombay on Franklin will deliver to me on Hancock so they are my favorite Indian joint.
  • My votes for Best: Olea (has gotten much better over past 6 months!), Luz, Stonehome, Chez Lola, Pequena, SMoke Joint. Only tried Epoca once but it was decent.

OK: Graziella's, Smoke Joint, Chez Oskar, Rice, Sushi D, Thomas Biesl, Lulu's

Worst: 67 Burger, June, Bonita, Scopello
  • I heard good things about Scopello, not so?

I have heard not so great things about Scopello. So much so that I never went. They ain't cheap neither.
  • The owner of a certain restaurant on Bedford recommended Olea to me, what is the vote on that?

I ate there a few months after they first opened for brunch. i had some type of green scrambled eggs and other stuff called a turkish breakfast. it was pretty good and not that badly priced around $9 or 10. I did not like sitting amongst their clientele however. I went an other time for lunch when it was not crowded at all and had their falafel and it was not much different or better than black iris. I said I should have picked something else. I have heard that they have recently improved but haven't been and have never been for dinner. I know they have a raw bar. I think thats the only one in the area. The same people who own moes and pequena and maggie brown own it.
  • it salways a pleasure to eat there .they have a huge list of good wines
    oh oui j adorre
  • Has anyone seen the large rats at the pizza place accross from Habana Outpost, I think those are the racoons everyone has been talking about?
  • Scopello - ick. totally uninspired and dull. bad wines. atmosphere is terrible.

Olea - quite good for brunch and dinner (completely different menus but both are good). I actually get cravings for their pork chop (dinner menu).
  • I agree, don't bother with Scopello (although it's pretty reasonably priced). The service is lousy, the food bland and the vibe boring. I've only had breakfast/brunch at Olea but everytime has been great. If you can do during the week it's a nice quiet place to have breakfast and read.
  • Grrr I hate this thread... I've run down my bank account and gained 5 pounds since moving to Brooklyn and I didn't even know about half of these places...

I am so excited to try Le Toukoleur and Brooks Valley. They are both pretty close to my house. Has anyone been to Petit Bassam (Lewis and McDonough) or Solomon's Porch (Stuyvesant and Halsey)? I've had brunch as Soloman's Porch and it was decent... nothing to write home about, but I'll probably go back. Has anyone had any other meals there? Petit Bassam was decent too.. they have a nice space. I think they would do well with live music on certain nights to attract the folks that hang outside of Bread Stuy when it closes....

Anyway carry on.. I'll be over here taking notes...
  • Try Tiny Cup on Nostrand and Clifton, and bushbaby on Fulton and Bedford for brunch also Common Grounds on Tompkins and Putnam and the new place coming on Malcolm X and Putnam opening 8/25/07 Cafe TwoFiftyEight.
  • Sorry, was really not impressed with Tiny Cup, service was not good, food was nothing special, and kinda overpriced for what it was. But it is cute and there is nothing else there really. I much prefer Smooch on Dekalb and Carlton. They have wifi, the best coffee, are mostly organic and tons of veggie options...

As for restaurants, the best in the neighborhood imho are:

    #1 Luz
    #2 A Bistro
    #3 Kush
#4 Madiba - love the food and atmosphere, great staff, long wait... Don't go there hungry!

Have to check out the new places poppin' up in Bed Stuy

Bored Food Lover has summed things up pretty well.....

On a side note, a new healthy seafood place (everything is baked or broiled) has opened up in Williamsburg, A'shay (So. 4th Street b/w Haveymeyer & Roebling). Food was excellent and they have a stunning garden. Not a fan of Williamsburg, but this is a place worth checking out, good seafood is so hard to come by in the hood.....

Habana Outpost-it has a great scene and I loveeeeeeeee their corn.
    n:)
  • I always think it's funny when people judge things based on other people's (that they don't know) opinions. I think the best thing to do is to try whatever you want to try and form your opinion that way. I'm not knocking the thread, just saying... As the saying goes, "One mans trash is another mans treasure."

P.S. I like scopello, habana, lulu's, red bamboo, paquena. And my opinion is the best.
  • i ate at sushi d on sunday night and had such a pleasant experience that i ate there again on monday night. highly recommended.
