there's a pooch on the roof of the building across from my apartment, on butler - not the building that went condo recently and has the fancy roof deck, but the one next to it. and this isn't the first time i've seen a (this?) dog up here. and there are four or five piles of, um, dog-doo on the roof, leading me to believe he's been up there for awhile (i just got back from being away for the weekend.) i'm worried - did his owners up and leave him here? i don't see any food....

anyway, he's black - seems like a lab mix, with white paws and a turquoise collar. does he belong to you?

  • That's sad.

Did you call the cops? 311? ASPCA? Please do. If you don't want to get involved in the situation then please send me the info (address, etc. ) and I'll do it. Thanks.
  • That is really sad. Did anyone call someone? Has anyone gone to the building and asked someone to gain access to the roof? Poor little guy. I've got a dog and that sucks to imagine.
  • Please call the ASPCA (646-235-6675 will get you directly to where you want to go - leave a message if you have to) as soon as possible. They will keep all of your contact information confidential. This is very, very sad. I imagine that they will investigate this right away ... this is definitely a cruelty case. Please post after you have called so we don't all sit and worry about that poor dog. Thanks so much for taking action!

don't be too sure about this. as long as the dog has food, water, and adequate shelter there won't be a whole lot the A can do. i'm not saying don't call: please do so as it's very important the situation is investigated. but just don't be too disappointed or angry if the A says there's nothing they can do. there are more than a handful of rooftop dogs out there in the city, and as long as the owners offer up the bare neccessities in food and shelter the law says they are well within their rights. it's sad, but true.
  • But if you say that you are worried that the dog may take "a leap" and that you think that it is a stray then it will probably get attention. It is certainly worth a try.

I once called the ASPCA about a cat that was being kept on a roof for days. It would yowl and cry with the summer sun beating down on it... The ASPCA would not come out because I didn't know the name of the owners so, they said, they wouldn't know who to send a notice to! I went over to that street and asked around and was told that an aunt visiting her relatives brought along her cat, and they were keeping it up on the roof "just for a week". Awful...
shishkab is right - my neighbor leaves their dog out in a dog run, with poo all over the ground. But the ASPCA says that so long as he has food and water and a shelter (in this case, a wooden sign propped up against the fence) then there is nothing they can do. I spoke to my neighbor and they say that they love their dog, and that he has access to their basement in case it rains. Still, hearing him barking and looking into his owner's windows, with those sad, basset-hound eyes, makes me sad. And I'm sorry for the pooch on the roof, too. Domestic animals need friends around, companionship, and a soft place to sit, and someone to clean up their poo.
Please do call the ASPCA and 311. I continue to do so when I see something wrong, even though the batting average for them actually helping isn't good. But we've got to try, right? Or Lox has offered...
  • Where is this exactly? What is the address? I will call ASPCA if no one else has. Has anyone called yet?
  • This is making me insane.. please tell me exactly where this dog is so I can call the ASPCA.. does anyone know?
  • i'm not sure of the exact address...it's on butler, on the side closer to the park, and it's the third building in - its roof connects with the second building. the last time this happened, i went over there and saw someone going in and told them there was a dog on the roof, and it seemed like they took care of it. my best guess is that its a situation like the one violet describes: someone needed the dog out of the apartment for some period of time, and left him up there. i didn't see food or water, but there's just no way to tell whose apartment he came from...unless someone knows him or the owner.
  • If nothing else pans out, maybe you can go a different route - call 311 and say there's a dog on a roof near you that barks all day and night, it's driving you crazy, etc. Enlist a few friends to call too and logroll a bit. Maybe the owner will catch some heat from the authorities and reconsider his policy of keeping the dog on the roof.

Don't know if it will work, but people don't seem optimistic about plan A.
  • Is the dog still there?
  • no, it was there for most of the night on sunday, but gone when i got up monday morning.
  • Oh my god. That is heartbreaking. This reminds me of a story. My friend met someone who had rescued a black lab pup who had been left on a roof in the summer for probably a week or more. No one heard it barking and by the time a repairman stumbled across it, it was skin and bones and had gotten stuck in melted tar so it couldn't move. Someone left it up there to die. It is brutal to leave a dog on a roof this way. The dog I'm talking about was adopted into a loving home, but it makes me sick to my stomach that people would be so cruel. I would find out who is the owner of that building, contact them directly and get that dog off the roof.
  • You're going abou this all wrong.

The ASPCA can't do anything if the dog is healthy- which that dog looks. Try the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Tell them you are concerned about unsightly and smelling dog poo coming from a neighboring roof- give them the building number. They'll look into it.

Sick dogs they don't care about, but the mere chance of poo will send them running.
  • so, it's in the 40s, and raining, and roof dog is back - right now. does no one on this board live in 14-20 butler? what can we do to get this pup off the roof?
  • Why not make a phone call to the ASPCA, they'll send someone out to inspect.
  • what happened? is the dog still there?
  • I hate this story... Is it still there?
  • Can't you find who the super is and bring it to their attention? I'm sure they wouldn't want an animal being kept up there. Possibly advising that you're going to have to call the authorities to report an unsanitary situation may bring them to action (if you get no where because he doesn't care about the animal) .
It's just not right to do this to any animal. Why even have one when you don't give it something as basic as shelter??
I once bumped into an idiot on in St. Thomas who was throwing coconuts at an Iguana in a tree. When I asked him what he was doing. he said "It's alright, I used to have one." What the hell does that mean...they like to have coconuts thrown at them? I told him if he didn't stop I was going to start throwing them at him.
Some people don't think of animals as having feelings or feeling pain. They should be banned from ever having them.
Go for it and report this person.
    Good luck
  • does anyone live in that neighborhood? can't someone reading this who lives nearby just go to the building entryway and get the name of the super or owner of the bldg and call them directly? I think the building owner's name has to be posted for fire dept rules.

and while you're at it post these pictures so everyone in the building can get pissed off and call the building owner too!

yes, it's not right, it's really sick to leave an animal alone on a rooftop in freezing rain with no food or water for hours and no shelter.
