my yard is filled with them and these stinging flies. Anyone else been attacked by these flies? They sit on you and throw up some gunk that stings. It's SO gross.
-
I'm in the same boat. I actually bought deep woods Off to get a good night of sleep earlier this week. What is the deal with them? I've never had this problem before. It is weird!

I think the mayor is spreading the west nile virus so that he and Ratner can drive out residents and build some super-duper glass towers with anti mosquito ventilation systems.
Call 311! wait.... you can't. Its the mayor's creation. -

* Off topic messages: Those that are irrelevant to the focus of the forum. This can also be done in the middle of an existing thread to attempt to hijack the thread, or otherwise change the topic at hand. Off topic messages usually occur when a member has been completely disproved in a serious debate, thus causing that member to use his or her other multiple pseudonyms for the purposes of changing the subject matter. These disruptions may result in the degeneration of a well informed thread into a heated juvenile exchange consisting of insults and childish accusations between multiple parties. Trolls can also throw threads off-topic and cause them to degenerate into flame wars by posting purposely offensive and inflammatory messages. -

very strange. I read this thread this AM and thought "these folks are nuts!" of course, standing on the subway platform, my hand was kinda itchy and sure enough, there's a mosquito bite. then, about half an hour ago, I realized there was another one near my elbow. wtf? -
They've gotten me 6 or 7 times since i moved in my new place a week ago right by Cafe Shane. I guess this should get us more excited for the temperature to drop and winter to begin.
-
Do you think they're coming from foundation digging at that new building on Stwerling? Really, it is fucking weird because they are everywhere!
-
Subject: got busloads of them over on lincoln and washington.
thought it was just the standing water on my roof. eating me and the toddler alive! -
Also, there is a pool on St. Johns, in the middle of the block btw. Washington and Classon. It hasn't been used at all this past summer, so maybe they are just turning that into a bloodsucking den of standing water!
-
i gotten bitten at my building a few times i think its coming from the foundation part of the condons that are being built. damn water borne pest.
-
Are you sure they're mosquitoes and not bedbugs?
-
i was rudely awaked by a HUGE buzzing in my ear at like 4am earlier this week. scared the bejesus out of me. it wasn't an angry fly, but actually sounded more like a bumble bee, or since you are have skeeter probs, come to think of it, it was probably just one of those ginormous mosquitos! why on EARTH are they still out???? with this october deep freeze coming though, maybe they will all go away, but it seems as if theyve decided to take refuge in our apartments, which sucks!
-
its part of vast goverment experiment to test out biological weapons on a urban population. with gene enhance skeeters.

Funny, we thought it was just us. The other half is really upset because several nights over the past three weeks, he's been bitten so badly that its woken him up. I on the other hand have been "relatively" bite free. His solution has been to turn on the AC and crank it up as high as it will go to freeze them out of the bedroom.
It's lasted so long that we too thought it might be bedbugs, but then I spotted one mosquito in the bathroom and another in the kitchen. -
Yeah, definitely mosquitoes and they are hanging out in our bathroom, too. It is nice and damp there! But, man they are geting in theough our screens? How are they really getting in? It's baffling.

bed bugs are red and kind of big - maybe 1/4 inch by 1/3 inch? they crawl and do not fly. also, bedbugs do not buzz. they come out and silently crawl on you when it's dark - you kind of feel all itchy but then you through on the lights and it's like an army flooding in for the attack. bedbugs like to bite in a line along the abdomen and seem to prefer females. -
so it seems like most complaints are coming from around washington & st.johns - is this right?
-
Exactly. My God, that noise! I hate that noise they make in your ear. One of the worst sounds in the world. I would prefer to hear cats in heat for days.
-
I have had tons of mosquitoes in my bedroom over the past few days, and have taken to killing them with a flyswatter (very satisfying). I am also mystified as to where they're coming from. I have 9 (!) bites on my right arm from the elbow up, and with my tendency to scratch at them, I now look like the world's dumbest heroin addict.
-
yup, same situation. we igot ourselves in a mosquito net for over the bed. they really seem to like attacking sleeping victims... but the net's been working out pretty well.
-
First frost is coming tonight, god willing -- should kill off the mosquitos for the winter -- until their eggs hatch next year...
-
I so hope the frost comes soon!
Lying in bed last night I had one buzzing over my head, like a circling vulture. Sucks knowing that as soon as you fall asleep, they'll descend on whatever part of your flesh is outside the covers. I woke up this morning with a big bite on my face. :x
Whatever variety of mosquito lives here in this area seems to leave really BIG welts, too. They last a long time. -
mosquitos: the secret shame.
i too have suffered in silence, and i'm all the way up in clinton hill. we've always had mosquito problems, but this year it's as though they're breeding inside the house and staying there. so it's not just a PH phenomenon, they're everywhere! i'm buying some Speed Stick with DDT. -
I too have noticed the mosquitos. Have a nasty bite on my back right now in fact. This has forced me to close my window at night and I love sleeping with the cool air coming in. Perhaps for whatever reason we are having a bad mosquito season in the area. I was over at a friend's house in Sunset Park a couple of weeks ago and got tore up by them there too.
And for the person who asked about bedbugs, these are definitely mosquitos. I checked the bed to make sure there weren't any insects coming from below. (And for the record, I know bedbugs do exist but I think news-driven paranoia has started to blow them out of proportion.) -
We've been having mosquitos too! and we never really did before.
I live in Clinton Hill, though. -
We had mosquitoes so hard-core this summer that we basically abandoned the back yard. I couldn't even water the lawn without garnering a dozen bites. I searched everywhere for standing water, but many friends complained of the same thing, and a girlfriend of mine said that she had read somewhere that this year would be horrible for mosquitoes because of global warming, so we eventually chalked it up to that (you can blame a lot on global warming).
And they just didn't seem to be leaving. Although, apparently now that some cold weather is upon us, they are all moving inside! -

In my last apartment (in PH, for what its worth) my roommate had bed bugs that he'd apparently brought with his futon when he moved in. Another friend of mine had em bad in his entire building. NY bed bugs are no joke... I have my mattress and box spring protected in a zippered vinyl mattress cover just to be on the safe side. Moral of the story: Don't sleep on bed bugs. Pun intended. get it

Subject: Bed Bugs vs Misquitos vs The NY Times
Oh thank g-d you guys also have misquitos. I've been bitten all over and I swear I have seen at laest one flying around my apartment.
My father called me today to say the front cover of the real estate section of the NY Times today was: Everything you wanted to know about bed bugs and were afraid to ask.
I secretly thought I had bed bugs, but I don't know. I have seen misquitos around and these bites are very misquito-esque.
What's the deal? Global warming somehow? They think it's August still? -
I can't take it anymore!!!! Right now I have about 4-5 actively swelling and itchy bites but I don't want to take Benadryl because then I'll be in zombie mode til dinnertime at least.
My theory is that they're desperate to get inside as it gets cooler. I guess it hasn't gotten cold enough to outright kill them yet. It sucks because our apartment gets REALLY hot in the winter so we often leave windows cracked. Do we just have to sweat it out until the first hard frost? -
skeeters love heat. just open all the windows and kill em with cold.
