Go to the drug store and purchase some aloe vera gel. Same thing that you use for bad sunburns works wonders on the bites. I now keep a small bottle by the bed to administer whenever I wake up itching. It doesn't work right away but within 10 minutes the itching usually subsides. Sometimes if you scratch later they will itch again, but just a dab more will stop it. Quicker than the Benadryl without the sleepiness. -
also, tiger's balm is good for bites.

I'm so glad I saw this post! Well, I'm not glad everybody is getting bit up, but since we moved in we have been straight up attacked by mosquitos (esp. since we didn't have screens for a while)... we chalked it up to the swamp that is our backyard, since it's filled with garbage, we figured that was attracting them, but i guess they'd be here regardless!
just hope they go away soon...
p.s., someone mentioned big moquitos - we have little black ones, they don't buzz or anything; is there a difference between the two? -
motherf**kers!!! I did not have my windows open at all on Monday, yet I killed 3 mosquitos just before I went to bed and got a wake up call from another at 8am this morning. :x Haven't counted the total bites yet.
Does anyone know if these things can travel thru drains or cracks around radiator pipes? No clue when or how they got in here. :? -

for really bad bites, i put a glob of .1% cortisone on a bandaid and put that over the bite. keeps the meds seeping in all day and also keeps things from geeeeennntly brushing the bite and making it itch all over again.
i thought i had escaped all this skeeter madness, but yesterday i woke up with a bite on the bridge of my nose, and i found one of the suckers in the house.
i think the mosquitos all read the nyt bedbug article and are enjoying biting sleeping people so they can watch us freak out staring at imaginary dots on the bed sheets. -
Mosquitos spoken here, too. But we brilliantly closed our windows that don't have screens and we're ok now. Rubbing alcohol actually worked to make the bites stop itching.
-
There has been a major mosquito problem since the beginning of September and I think it's from all of the stacks of tires at all the autobody shops in the neighborhood. We've had a lot of rain in the last two months. Spare tires are a favorite breeding place of mosquitos.

Subject: ah ha, it wasn't just us.
We've been bitten to death in my place on St. Johns. But it stopped about a week ago. I had started spraying myself and my bedroom with "off" before bed. At a party, I sprayed all guests with off when they entered. I spotted the LARGEST mosquito known to man - it was half the size of my hand - in my building hallway at the height of the problem. A monster. I literally screamed and let a neighbor lady kill it. Also - the hand bites left scars on my boyfriend's hands. Something worse about the hand bites. And yes they also bit my forehead, repeatedly. Disgusting. -
My roommates and I have been getting eaten alive at least one night a week for the past few months we've been in our new place near Washington and Lincoln. I hate having to make a can of flying insect spray and Caladryl a part of my bedroom decor...but I often wake up in the middle of the night and can't go back to bed untill the Caladryl kicks in and the itching stops.
Whats the deal? Whats a safe way to get rid of them inside the house? Outside, I burn citronella candles when hanging out on the roof deck - but that's good for inside. -
Subject: I thought I was going INSANE!!!
I'm so glad this string is up. I'm on St. Marks between Underhill and Washington and have been bitten each night for the past three nights. -
Yeah, I'm a bit relieved to know its not just a problem with my house.
-
yep.. i slept like crap last night because i was woken up twice with buzzing in my ear and refused to lie back down until the motherf***ers were dead. Where are they coming from!?!? How do they get inside?!?!? I'm flabberghasted!
-
...and they're back.

Daveb's take on the subject from an IM exchange he posted on his blog:
daveb and cupcake wrote: daveb: Are you getting bombarded with mosquitoes at home?
Damn, I miss that guy!
Cupcake: no. mosquitoes? here? now?
daveb: My apartment is up to my BALLS in mosquitoes
daveb: I actually have to have a mosquito net over my bed to sleep
daveb: and no, I’m not coming down off a nasty meth binge
daveb: I am itchy though
Cupcake: what is that about? mosquitos I ain’t got. verbally abusive and possibly crack addled neighbors, yes.
Cupcake: mosquitoes, no.
daveb: Jesus’s nuts, they’re driving me up the wall
daveb: I guess it’s the weather or something, but i’m killing like 6-8 a night sometimes
daveb: standing in my tighties, clutching a swatter and cursing god
Cupcake: do you have your windows open? It’s cold, dude.
daveb: Open, closed… i don’t fucking get it
daveb: Oh, so I had a slight accident with the beard trimmer, netting me a delightful reverse Hitler.
daveb: so, I shaved…sigh
daveb: No more Moses-mode
Cupcake: hooray. now put yer specs back on and we’ve got a deal.
daveb: No specs. Spectacles are the power-tool of the devil
daveb: But I swear, it’s like a fricking epidemic
Cupcake: have you hit up Joyce yet or are you still light on sugar?
daveb: Maybe it’s a plague from the G to the O-D for slipping out of Moses-mode
daveb: Joyce? Oh the bakery. I don’t do it. THERE’S CHILDREN THERE.
Cupcake: I’m sure G-D and the Department of Health is pleased with the flea dip.
daveb: I went once but there were four (FUCKING FOUR, WTF?!?!) of the beastly fuckers running around with gooey fingers and snot askew.
Cupcake: if you don’t look children in the eye, they usually don’t attack
daveb: daveb does not do.
daveb: screw that. I eat children
daveb: the only child I like is the kind that don’t leave stains on my shoes after I step on their heads
daveb: whoops…did I say that?
Cupcake: are you afraid they’re going to wipe snot on you or request a paternity test?
daveb: Oh jesus
Cupcake: DADDY!!!!!
daveb: I will drop no offspring
daveb: christ, I might have to flog myself for even thinking about offspring
Cupcake: that is very un-moses like. don’t you need to produce a whole tribe?
daveb: Moses packs a posse. No need for children
Cupcake: please, some day I’m going to see a littlle bug-eyed kid with a devilish grin giving some cherub an atomic wedgie shreiking about spackling, and I’m going to know exactly what happened.
daveb: Oh hells no
Cupcake: oh shit i just destroyed my printer
daveb: AWESOME
daveb: the trees thank you
daveb: printers are evil
daveb: I destroyed mine years ago
daveb: I don’t use paper at home
daveb: I go straight up semaphore
daveb: Sometimes a little morse…
daveb: and by the way…I am NOT fucking crack-addled
daveb: The first rule about daveb is that daveb RULES
Cupcake: oh fuck me it did it again
daveb: i’m going to lose a finger. i know it
daveb: DO IT

They ARE back.
A poem:
Warm nights,
bug bites, last wiiiiir
in my ear,
can't stand that slap
as i sleep
weep
pretend you aren't here. -
Subject: Mosquito Report from Ft. Greene
Here in Ft. Greene they have finally retreated to whatever circle of hell they reside in when the temperature drops below 55. I hope I'm not jinxing myself by saying that.
This was the worst summer I can remember. I even built a homemade mosquito trap (totally ineffective). Next year I am going with this and OFF. -
i havent seen them in like 2 or 3 weeks now. i hope they are gone for good.
-
they bit up my elbow last night. luckily it's cool enough to leave the house fully covered to hide the shame.

time to go around the building to check for water pools. -
Yep, the bastards are alive and biting in my apartment. I'm in the St Johns and Fifth Ave 'hood. At first Ithought that my Min Pin had fleas and that her fleas were biting me. THen I spotted one or two mosquitoes (and killed one by smacking t with the latest issue of Vogue. I HATE mosquitoes because I have, I think, an allergy and any time they bite me it swells up to the size of a golfball and often leaves a scar too. I even avoid vacation spots like the Caribbean, Miami etc in order to avoid the mosquitoes. Who knew I'd have to encounter the bastards inside my apartment in the middle of Fall.
-
I am going to invest in that fan thingy! It looks fantastic. They have kind of gone away here, but there are a few still making that terrible sound and attacking my ankles as I sleep. Sometimes, I think I'm imagining them, but then find the damn bite! It is October, for chrissakes!
-
I can't believe they're still not dead. I got 3-4 new ones the night before last and 2-3 last night. All on my arms, face, and shoulders (parts not covered with sheets while sleeping). Tonight I guess I'm going to resort to Off, annoying as my husband will find it, because I have a meeting tomorrow and look absolutely ridiculous.
-
guys go around the buildings you live in look for large pools of water or osmething. the ones that was bothering me all died out!!!!
-
Armchair,
I have absolutely no sitting pools of water in my apartment other than my toilet and that flushes. -

Does your husband also get bitten? If less than you, you can use this to justify whatever measures you see fit. I've noticed the mosquitoes round here seem to share my taste: the best mosquito protectant I've ever had is my wife. I used to suffer terribly and resorted to all manner of devices and poisons, but I've hardly been bitten since we shacked up together. Needless to say she does not find this amusing. -

. like around the building like in the basement or something. -
I feel like the little Poltergeist girl, but damnit, they're back after the hard, hard rainfall yesterday.
-
i have had mosquitos ALL summer; those really viscious ones
burning punk has helped,
i surround myself with about 8 sticks when i am working outside
and as soon as 1 or 2 burn down i know it
but to find them back again and it's almost november!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
my ankles got nailed today and they are in the house too -

Ok, vanilla, i think you have to share at least one of those photos with your fellow squeeter-bite victims.
Howdy, Stranger!
