  • The best way to "vote" on Alibi's jukebox is to not feed it. That said, good luck denying yourself the drunken pleasure of paying out the ass to download Candy Says or whatever.

No matter what, Alibi is a cool place. My other faves are Moe's and Rope. Havana Outpost can be fun on a hot day, too. Ashamed to admit I haven't been to Frank's yet. If you're in P Heights, Soda and Beast are both nice.

If it's starting to sound like I'm recommending every bar around here, then let's face it, Brooklyners are generally just more pleasant to be around than Mallhattanites. I am at peace with my chauvinism on this. I'll get drunk with a stranger in Brooklyn ANY DAY over the same on that tiny island.
  • people please stop putting down Reign and making up false rumors. just because you don't fit in with a bar's regular crowd doesn't mean it's a bad place. stop being scared. start understanding that places like Reign are just as acceptable as every other bar in the neighborhood. basically all of the rumors about this place that i have heard are based on stereotypes and are untrue.

also, if you're curious about the navy yard bar then go inside and check it out. it's not really a strip club per-se but they do have scantly clad women walking around willing to give lap dances. you will also be searched by a bouncer when you enter. the best time to go i'd say is in the early evening when it's not crowded.

You have best quote of 2007 so far on the Fort Greene board.

    Baaahaahaaaa! That was funny.
  • Subject: rope, and the others

rope is defintely my favorite of the bed stuy clinton hill bars..
    alibi second...
sputnik is good when they have the old skool hip hop djs like premier and pete rock, jeru was ok, saw all 3.. and manjinga party is the shit
  • anyone been to vesper's? it opened up where the gardens use to be. i've walked by it a few times and it's been empty - i'm wondering what's going on in there.
  • I was at Vespers a few weeks back. A few flat screen TVs. The inside looks nice, but a little 'blah'. They probably aren't done with the place. I will check it out again in a few weeks because the place has promise based on how they renovated the innards...

Been to Reign once, and the place is really nice.

I can't stand Rope - reminds me of all that I hate about Williamsburg. If diverse means 99% white with tight pants, then this fits the bill. Especially in Clinton Hill, which retains genuine diversity, this does not qualify as diverse. I've been there a few times.

5 Spot is great! Great music, a beautiful wood bar, nice service, cheap food. I've never been there late night when there is supposedly a cover.
  • I used to enjoy Rope. Last couple times, though, my alcohol-induced happy place was invaded by dogs running off the leash and barking periodically. I don't care if someone brings his or her dog to the bar, but I dislike hearing it or having it under my feet when I'm minding my own business and concentrating on the task at hand.

I've had good experiences at Stonehome. And the mojito martinis at Luz are delicious but lethal.

I've been to Reign on numerous occations and they are ghetto. The do have a lot of problems with the police. The bouncers are rude. The bus boys are under aged and they are over priced. The place it self is very nice but they let too many under aged kids in there. They need to get it together
  • I hate Moe's with the passion of a thousand suns. Which is pretty passionate. It doesn't have the space to be both a lounge and a bar, but tries for both anyway. The 'Duff's' is MGD. The female bartender couldn't pour a Guinness if her life depended on it. Worst of all - not only do they put on the pretense of bouncers (plural!) and rope for a place the size of a postage stamp, but the bouncers are assholes, to boot. the bartenders aren't assholes, granted, but it's not saying much when that's the best you can come up with.

I really wanted to like Moe's. Alas. Alibi is ok. I wish there was a better option, like a chill tapas bar or some place without so much light (or TVs) as that new bar/restaurant on Lafayette across from Academy diner.
  • I agree with the Pikesville: what is up with the dogs off the leash, running around and barking at rope? when did that become ok? do these dog owners think that just because Rope has couches they can act like they're in their own apartment? I don't get why the owner puts up with this behavior - it seems to me he should let people know that dogs are ok but not barking leaping dogs.... next thing we'll have toddlers climbing up the bar stools because they resemble jungle gyms.

    stop the maddness.

I went into the Navy Yard Bar and the bartender/dancer Mystique told me that she thought Reign was going to close down because of all the fights and problems they have there. When a stripper a seedy bar that caters to the navy yard tells me that a club is trouble, I tend to believe it. It's admirable to say that Reign is as acceptable as every other bar in the neighborhood and it's problems are based on sterotypes but it looks like it's based on more than rumors. Just ask the dancers next door. I trust thier opinion on how safe the place is over yours.
  • I think the bottom line is the area is really lacking in decent casual bar options! Compared to other neighborhoods in brooklyn, the FG/CH areas are far behind in drinking options. Most of those discussed here have something or other that can be really off-putting to someone who wants an easy drink in a comfortable place. Rope is good/okay. It gets really crowded in there and unless you have a sofa/chair it doesn't make sense to hang out or walk 5-10 minutes to find out if that's the case just to leave. Alabi is good. Also gets crowded but you can easily stand around if that's the case. The rest of Dekalb is just restaurants really. I really wish Moes was better. So disappointing, but the place does have a staff issue. Why does a drink have to come with so much attitude? Relax. Don't pressure your clients into a conversation. Don't ignore your clients for 5-10 minutes while you chat with your friends. I would like to like this bar, but it's often too embarrassing to go there. Stonehome wine bar! Wow, talk about attitude. This place has no clue. But they do have good wines and food. Mullanes! Ha. What an aweful place! Sports bar? Fort Greene? Wrong, just wrong. Bad/fake interior. Overpriced. Does anyone expect to pay tax on a draft from the bar?? Weird. Then there's Franks Lounge. It's totally hit or miss. I have had some great moments there. Other times not worth it and you'll know at the door. I think there's also Night at the Cookers on Fulton, but I think they are totally exclusive, ie. don't serve drinks to people they don't want there. Does anyone else have the same problem I do with the bar options? I have lived here for years and it's not getting better.
  • Red Bamboo has a cool bar, i heard the new Pillow Cafe is going to serve beer/wine and it looks pretty great in there, there's a bar at the Austrian restaurant across from BAM, there are also several bars on Fulton. also, there's a new rumor going around that someone is opening a bar/art gallery in the old Pleasure Palace space. could be cool but can anyone confirm it?

I visited a few times, check this thread
  • Subject: best bar?

Moe's is the best bar in the area.. 2 for 1 draft beers during happy hour.. u cant beat that..plus good music and karaoke on tuesday nights..
  • here's a story. two summers ago, i was at moe's on a friday or saturday night, the place is jam packed and you had to fight your way to get a drink. anyway, either rap, hip hop or funk was on the stereo and i'm up by the bar trying to get a drink and the next thing i know, one of the black kids from the projects just bitch slapped an artsy black guy. in the process, he spilled the artsy guy's red wine on his white shirt. the 'security' guards (what is he, a nation of islam dude?) didn't do anything, the bustling and loud crowd quieted down for about 2 minutes until the thug black kids left and the party and music resumed. the artsy guy tried his best to blot out the red wine from his white shirt..

Moe's is good if you don't mind massive crowds and the occasional conflicts that come with them. (see directly above)
  • I'm a Moe's regular and I know altercations are extremely rare. If they do occur it's always late on a Friday or Saturday night. Moe's is great during the week (Su-Th) but it does get crowded weekend nights. It's actually a destination bar on weekends for alot of people living in other parts of Brooklyn. Just like popular spots throughout the city it's not the place to go on a weekend. Although the crowd has become a little more Park Slopish the bar still has the best mix of booze, music & people in the neighborhood.

The bartenders and staff are great, especially once you take the time to introduce yourself. The story mentioned above happened at least six months ago (if not a year).
  • its funny how LTJBUKEM uses negative reference to describe moes and the type of people that work there or drink there.."black kid from the projects" "artsy black guy" "nation of islam dude" "thug black kids" sounds like LTJBUKEM was the one who needed to be bitch slapped during the altercation..seems like your pretty intimidated by all of the "types" of people u just described.. get some balls.. or get out of the neighborhood..
  • gotta agree with mr. bottle flipper on that one... the tone of that post was definitely offensive and borderline racist. sounds like that "rap, hip hop or funk" that was playing on the stereo got the crowd all riled up. no way those "black kids from the projects" aren't going to bitch slap somebody. those "thug black kids" are dangerous! LTJBUKEM, you are definitely part of the problem not the solution. have you considered park slope? the real estate speculation isn't quite as good but there are less black people so you'll definitely feel more comfortable. if you can make the move to brooklyn heights that would be even better.

you do know your namesake, LTJ Bukem, is black right? i guess he would be one of those artsy black guys getting bitch slapped by the project kids.
  • Have you considered that the poster was just bating you?
  • Whatever he was doing worked. I don't care what the poster's intentions were... Am I supposed to not respond? I guess you just let people say whatever they want to you and let it slide. That's not how I'm wired...
  • no bating here. just giving a description. apologies that you got all riled up. no harm meant. i will give no more bar descriptions with colors involved so as to not offend. apologies again.
  • It's not the fact the you use colors, its the way you describe people and your (continued) tone. I know Moe's carding policy is especially strict on weekends so I assume everyone in the bar was at least 21. I wouldn't usually describe a 21 year old as a kid unless I'm over 40. While you may be over 40, with username like LTJBukem I would doubt. Not many people over 40 listen to LTJ Bukem and frequent bars late on weekend nights. You may as well just say "the wild jungle music got the n***ers all agitated and they started fighting." I don't know what your intentions were in that particular post but you obviously have underlying issues with race. I'm not sure why you came to Ft. Greene anyway (other than real estate speculation). I suggest you stick to Stonehome where its safe for white people (as long as you can handle to the occasional artsy negro). You might catch a beat down from those black kids in Moe's.
  • I think a lot of people under 30 (or so) call other under-30s "kids." I don't think that's a racial thing at all -- perhaps more of an attitude/maturity thing. Also, as much as I can see your point, Carlton, about ltjbukem's post -- and I do -- I also think you may be reading some thoughts and assertions into it that aren't there.
  • carlton banks, most ppl with only 12 posts under their belt would do well to read a few more threads before making such accusatory comments. i apologized and well, if you don't like it, then i can't do anything about it.
  • that's your response? really?

what does the number of posts I've written have to do with anything? does that change what you wrote? does that make my opinion any less valid?

now that you're on post 227 i would think you would read what you write before you hit the submit button. i don't think you are an out and out racist or anything. i'm sure it was unintentional and you meant no ill will... but you still wrote it. it's sort of like when white people call black people "articulate" (i.e. Joe Biden's comments on Barack Obama). hopefully you'll be a little more thoughtful on post 228...

thank you for the apology. i'll leave it at that... and Moe's is still the best bar in Ft. Greene!!!
