Newkirk Avenue...Safe for this Wisconsin girl?

  • I live in this neighborhood, and I need to correct a couple of things:

    - It's most definitely NOT 40 minutes to Union Square! It's about 25 minutes from Newkirk on the Q, which is about what you can hope for anywhere in this town.

    - Cortelyou Road isn't a few train stops away, it's one extremely short train stop from Newkirk, or a very short and pretty walk.

    - It isn't only families out here; Cortelyou has a lot of cool stuff going on: 2 cool bars, interesting people, couple of nice restaurants, farmer's market, bookstore/cafe, etc., , and the Pakistani food around here beats all.

Marlborough Road is one of the prettiest streets in the neighborhood - I'd think it'd be lovely to live there. I've never felt anything but safe around here.
  • Subject: Just moved in...

My wife and I just moved to this area. So far it seems fine. It is pretty quiet at night as some of the posters already mentioned, but its not completely desolate. Cortelyou is really just a couple of blocks away and there is some life up there - Curbstone Pub, VoxPop Coffee shop, the Farm on Adderly restaurant, Picket Fence restaurant... and some other stuff of interest. Newkirk Plaza itself is actually a lot more useful than its made out to be. There are some good shops in there - a nice hardware store, a decent wine shop (but a fancy wine shop is opening on Cortelyou), decent Mexican restaurant, and a Chase bank. Momm Lucia's around the corner is a pretty comfy old school red sauce Italian spot. (With $8 pasta nights on Wednesdays!)

My sense so far is that its pretty safe in the immediate area, but like anyplace you'll need to be careful. The commute into Manhattan isn't too bad, I'd say in the 30 min range.

Its also a reasonable walk to Prospect Park, which really is one of the highlights of the city. You may want to get a dog. The park is better if you have a dog with you.

    Welcome to the neighborhood...

Some Chick From Wisconsin wrote: I saw a apt on Craigslist for $1100 room/kitchen/bath in an area off of the B/Q Newkirk stop. Just being hones, I have NO street smarts. Can I walk around without fearing a mugging? Is this area Bed-Stuy bad?

...and yes, I know that all areas of NY have improved and all areas require that I am alert, but still...
If you have no street smarts young lady, it's OK, Just be careful what ever you do 1100 is kinda high for a single person a rule of thumb in renting an apartment is ( to be confortitable your income should be the same per week as rent per month or something like that then again these days, in NY rents are way out of hand
  • I'd say the area is safer than Prospect Heights.
