Bonita? — Brooklynian

Bonita?

Does anyone know anything about Bonita? It's either a restaurant or bar getting ready to open on Myrtle (Clermont - Vanderbilt).

  • The original Bonita's is a Mexican Restuarant located in Williamsburg. They've got the best mexican grilled corn and fish tacos IMHO. They've also got very good sangria all at a reasonable price.

It's one of my favorite places to eat and I can't wait for the one to open in our nabe.

I thought the Bonitas was opening up on DeKalb, not Myrtle, where the old Italian restuarant use to be?
  • You're right. It's Dekalb. HUGE brain fart here.
  • That's great news. The Bonita's in Williamsburg is great. Who doesn't love fish tacos?

    Me! Yuk!

But I'm sure they'll have something else I'll like.
  • don't knock the fish tacos until you try them. i was a bit turned off by the idea of them at first but now i can't get enough of it

in the winter they have a spicy seafood soup, at least they do in the williamsburg location, that's absolutely fantastic

man, i think i'm going to have to head to williamsburg this weekend - all this talk about bonitas has me craving it
  • Euphemisms aside, fish tacos are delicious.

The corn and fresh guacamole are fantastic, too.
  • Sorry, but I'm sticking to my guns here. I love calamari, fried catfish, shrimp, sushi (of some varieties), and scallops. I don't like oily fish, or oysters or mussels and I'm just not gonna be won over to fish tacos.

Be happy. It just leaves more for the rest of you.
  • Sounds excellent.

When is it supposed to open?>
  • It's supposed to open the week of the 12th. They're just waiting on kitchen equipment.
  • too bad there are great mexican restaurants already in the area. why on earth didn't they put something interesting on Dekalb? i guess the real thing has to get replaced by the hipster thing in every neighborhood. in the meantime i'll stick to Castros.
  • it's suppose to open on november 15th if all goes well.
  • I went to Bonita a couple weeks ago... The fish tacos were excellent, but the charge for EVERYTHING. It was crazy. They charged for the chips and salsa...I was ok with that. I asked if I could have my tacos on a flour instead of corn tortilla.. They said no, but they could bring a tortilla out for like 2 more bucks.. I was like, "Ok..." Then my friend asked for a little pico de gallo.. They brought her out about 1/4 cup pico and charged like 3 dollars for it. It was a bit much.. but I agree the fish tacos are good :)
  • The Bonita on DeKalb is not as good at Williamsburg. In fact, I think it's pretty bad! I went twice and the food had no flavor and the drinks were terrible. I would rather go to Pequenas.

BUT perhaps I should have tried the fish tacos...I'll give it one more shot!
  • wait - i thought it wasn't open yet. how did you go there? incidentally, the one in w-burg also has delicious and cheap brunch, and aguas frescas.
  • It's been open for months - on Dekalb (and Vanderbilt, I think). Check it out - would be curious your thoughts since you are familiar with the original.
  • between Vanderbilt and Clermont

  • oh, i didn't notice before that the thread started last year. i will definitely go and report back! one thing i remember is that the "chopped salad" is way nicer than it sounds, with roasted pumpkin seeds and nice dressing, etc.
  • I've been there three times and LOVE it. Chili Rellenos? Awesome. Pork Burrito? Awesome. Margaritas? Awesome. I had the same waitress twice and she was terrific, then got a guy the third time who was pretty apathetic, but other than that, I really enjoy this place.
