Mass Card — Brooklynian

Mass Card

This is a long shot, but does anyone know if there is an RC church in the neighborhood that has nice mass cards? I'm looking for the old school kind printed on vellum.

  • I'm not certain that they are both RC, but try Holy Name (I think it might be Holy Name of Jesus) on PPW around Windsor or St. Saviour, which is 8th around 5/6/7th St.

My landlord is old-school Irish/RC and a long-time Sloper, and I'm thinking that her local church (Holy Name) would have them
  • Now you have to tell us what a mass card is.

There's also a big Catholic church on 6th Ave towards Flatbush. That and the two that Flexi mentioned are the only ones I can think of around here. Holy Name does seem like a good bet for anything old-school.
  • It's been a longgggggggggggggg time since I've been in a RC church, but if I remember correctly, mass cards are sent when somebody Catholic dies (there are also mass cards for other occasions like birthdays, saint days, etc., but most common are for funerals, I think).

They're usually laminated and contain a prayer and can have the name of the person that the prayer is for so that it's personalized.

I think churches also sell them so that the proceeds can go back to the church.

Basically a way of letting a practicing RC know that you are saying special prayers for whatever their occasion/need is.
  • Thanks, I'll check them out. They're basically sympathy cards, but the deceased also gets a special shoutout during mass. :) Unfortunately, the print quality of these things has gone down and the ones I've seen lately look kind of cheesy.
  • Are you looking to have a church mention someone specific on a mass card, or are you just interested in finding one in general? Because if you don't need one that mentions someone specific, you can find some on eBay, even vintage -- I just did a quick search and they have a lot of them.
  • Somewhat heartwarming that organized religion is alive and kicking on ebay.
  • Subject: RC churches in PS

    St Thomas Aquinas - 9th St. & 4th Ave
    St. Savior's - 8th Ave & 6th Street
    St. Augustine's - 6th Ave & ?St. John's?
    Holy Family - 13th st - bet 4th & 5th
St. Francis Xavier - Carroll Street (?)
  • Anybody here been in that religious shop on 5th Avenue? Maybe they'd have mass cards.

Stevo - a mass card is given at a specific church because that church is saying a mass in the person's name.

A botanica is used mostly for Santeria

Ah -- I'm obviously clueless, thanks!

(I thought maybe that was the store that the churches go to buy blank mass cards....)
