New Cheesesteak place on Flatbush

Maybe I should qualify that - solid for the area. On the universally accepted and objective global cheesesteak measurement scale I'd give it a B to B-. That's good enough to feed my combined appetite for food and nostalgia.
RE: the "two days" thing. No clue either.
RE: "wit." I grew up in the Philly 'burbs and later 10 years in the city proper and NEVER heard of "wit" until people in NYC started telling me that that was the "authentic" way to refer to fried onions. Fuck that. I'll stick with "fried onions."
My biggest beef (BAM!) with the steaks is the reprehensible dearth of cheese (unless you get wiz). At least 2 more slices is a must.bobbybrummel wrote: [quote=Muk]This Philly ex-Pat says SOLID.
really? i just dropped by "high cheese," and was not impressed. first off, the whole friendly thing is really off-putting. part of the charm of getting a good steak is the attitude--and for the non-n00b, nothing's worse than being coddled. and what's with the two days thing? i would allow them that as some sort of punctuation to a general snarkiness, but who takes mr. nice guy seriously when he's suddenly cocky?
lack of attitude aside, i did not care for the actual sandwich. for the past few years my yardstick for extra-delaware valley steaks has been whether or not they can hold their own against a simple sandwich made by my middle school cafeteria (shitty, but probably better than your mom can make it). for instance, the now defunct tony luke's of nyc cheesesteak was just shy of matching that arcola intermediate steak, and was therefore almost acceptable given the circumstances (i'll admit, i've never been to the real tony luke's, so i don't know how it compares, but god help them if it's the same thing). i'd say this "high cheese" steak is closer to my immigrant mother's idea of good eats (to wit: stinky) than a philly suburb middle school steak, which is kind of sad, and definitely not worth my $5.25.
oh and that shit gave me hiccups like you wouldn't believe. -

i hope you noticed that i was trying to defuse the faux-authenticity of "wit" by using it as pretentiously as possible. -
I noticed. And I commend you on your decisivenesses on the action.

Per all your suggestions, I tried this place last night. Added pickles and hot peppers to the provolone (yes, the cheese was a bit sparse), which turned out to be a bit much. But, it was very good, excellent, lean steak with lots of jus.
Definetely worth the $. -
i too, tried high stakes for the first time last night. the steak was very good. although like some of you have said, i wish that they had thrown some more cheese on the actual sandwich. i also have a fetish for cheese fries, and gotta admit that i devoured the cheese fries more than i did the cheesesteak... but thats because i am weird, and could live off of cheese whiz for the rest of my life if it weren't hazardous to my health!
overall, i'm happy that this place is here!! and even more happy that i can get real cheese fries so close to home. they do it right...unlike all of the diners here with "cheesefries" that simply melt a slice of american cheese on top of fries *blech*. -
So I found out the origin of the "shoot hoops not guns" sign. Was in High Stakes yesterday with our youngest. After we ordered, he sat down and started talking to one of the guys behind the counter. When they finished their conversation the guy handed him a business card for a basketball league at Brower Park in CH.
The slogan for the league? "Shoot hoops, not guns". Its on the card.
I asked the guy if he was affiliated with the league and he said that he coached a team there, and that the league was run by his uncles and cousins. The family also owns and operates the business. -
Alright I want this place to be good so I'm still gonna go back at least once but the cheesesteak I got was pretty bad. The meat was dry and not finely diced (as I'd prefer, so that wouldn't be too big a deal). Not enough cheese as someone else mentioned. The biggest problem was the huge pool of grease that either came from it or maybe was poured on at the end(?). This wasn't clear running grease either. It was red, maybe like greasy Chinese food grease. I've never seen that before.
I know it's all in the hands of the range cooker so maybe Sunday afternoon isn't their top notch guy? They were friendly though, for what that's worth. -
Gonna vent, so bear with me or ignore me...
Love the food here, everytime I order the food comes well prepared and damn damn tasty.
But!
I am not ordering delivery anymore from High Stakes. Why? Cause now for the FOURTH TIME, the delivery man has no change with him.
I even told them the third and fourth time to MAKE SURE THE DELIVERY MAN has money.
Just now, sent the poor kid back because he didnt have change for a $20. Called the restuarant and told them to never mind my business.
I am far from a snobby foodie or a demanding person, but having change is a BASIC when it comes to being in the food delivery business.
If you cannot get that right, gonna stoop giving you my biz -
wow - that's pretty sucky! I'd go nuts if that happened to me. bleh.
-
It happened to me like it happened to Fischel, except I was at Freddys. Dude stood there and went through what seemed like about 30 pockets before he admitted he didn't have any change.
Easy to break a twenty at a bar, fortunately. I tipped him a dollar. -

I ordered delivery from HighStakes last weekend and charged it to a credit card, adding the tip and signing the receipt when the delivery guy arrived. When it cleared to my credit card, turns out they didn't add the tip! If there's any justice, it was one of your past delivery drivers who got jipped. -
Izisharp, I had that happen to me as well with High Stakes as well. I guess you can say that the six times I ordered from the place, there was an issue five of the times...

Subject: I am a fan of High Stakes
I am not sure of what u guys are really going on with. I am a true fan of High Stakes Chesse Stakes. You guys are reading into everything a little too much. Shoot hoops not guns, works for me. I believe that the owner is gearing to-wards the new stadium that is going to be built in a few years. The see you in 2 days I love it my whole family goes there. I have a 4 year old daughter who just loves the sandwich. So I think some of you guys need to pay them another visit and try it again. -

The "see you in 2 days" thing is charming; and I'm also a fan of "shoot hoops, not guns" -- it reminds me of some late 80s hip hop PSA slogan or something. That said, the sandwiches aren't all that. And "gearing towards the new stadium" is enough to make me boycott that place. I'm an NBA and cheese-steak fanatic! -
We were there last weekend. Someone mentioned legit meat, but they must have switched because it was too expensive. I definitely got some pressed meat sliced up. It was extremely salty, which killed any real flavor it might have had. The sodas were vital for once, but were in smallish sizes for what passes these days.
For what you get, I should have paid a little over half what it cost. The people there are nice though. And I like orange. Maybe they went a little overboard, but my kid loved the color scheme. -
"gearing towards the new stadium". Yeah, no shit. That's enough to keep me out of there forever, besides the heart attack inducing nature of the food.

As a very recent PH transplant with a lifetime in Philly and a 'healthy' resume on the subject, I figured I should add my $.02 on this thread. I ate in at High Stakes a couple of weeks ago. Though it wasn't a bad sandwich, it wasn't a cheese steak.
For starters, there was some seasoning on the meat which isn't necessary if you use good quality rib eye steak, and is something you'll never find in Philly.
Secondly, the steak should be sliced thin before being chopped up on the grill. This was definitely not the case at High Stakes - the consistency was all wrong.
Lastly, the roll was more like something from Subway than a proper Italian roll.
The cheese wiz was actually spot-on, but that's hardly noteworthy since it comes in a large bomb-resistant can with no expiration date.
So, since you live only a 2-hr drive or just over a 1-hr train ride from Philly, I suggest you check out the real thing. I would recommend Pat's, Geno's, or Tony Luke's in South Philly, Jim's on South Street, Chink's in the Northeast, D'Allesanro's in Roxborough, or, frankly, just about any decent pizza or hoagie place with a grill.
Oh, and one more thing, with service as slow as High Stakes (I waited 15 mins for a cheese steak when there were only about 4 customers in the place), they'd be out of business in Philly faster than you can say, 'wiz wit'. -
Welcome to the neighborhood, Jimmy_Sunshine.

Yeah, that was what I found the one time I tried 'em. WAY too salty. I couldn't even finish mine. -

No doubt. I said "wiz without", and then I had to explain what I meant. Umm... hello? It's on your menu that way.
I'd add Abner's in University City to your Philly list, too. -

I finally tried High Stakes tonight for the first time and to be honest, the deal breaker for me had nothing to do with the food. I waited 25 minutes, possibly more, in the relatively empty restaurant for three sandwiches and some fries to go. For a place that basically only serves cheese steaks, that is ridiculous. I mean how long does it take to throw some steak on the grill and splatter it with cheese?
On a positive note, the woman who took my order was super cheerful and sweet (and did apologize for the wait), but it not enough to encourage me to repeat the experience anytime soon. -
High Stakes on Flat&Berg ? High Stakes is a good name. Forget them! Try City Sub around the corner on Bergen St. AMAZING heros, hot and cold. Don't think they do a philly but the hot roast beef w/prov is miles better than the sandwich I had from HSCS. We only try it because the line at City Sub was too long. My stance now is it would have been worth the wait.
-
City Sub is great. Fresh ingredients, efficient and friendly staff. I wish it was closer to me.
Has anyone tried the crab salad sandwich there? I keep being tempted by it and get talked out of it by Mrs. C. -
I tried City Sub for the first time this weekend, and I haven't had a tuna sub that good since I was in high school. I'll definitely be back.

Subject: Hi Stakes Cheesesteak
You think you waited a long time? My longest wait with two little ones was 37 minutes for two Philly cheeses to stay. When I ordered takeout that was cut down to 28 minutes, with a woman (the owner?) coming over with an update on our order only AFTER my husband came in to wait with me.
As much as I love the idea of a legit Philly cheesesteak in the nabe, it's just not worth the wait - and far from what I remember having in Philly.
Howdy, Stranger!
