It is true that 13 out of the 16 previous projects they promote on their site are malls. And they're as ugly as all get-out too.
Coming soon: The Coney Island Shopping Mall. -
If they're ugly they should fit right into Coney Island. Perfect contextual development.
I'd also add that LeeHo's posted article largely bolsters the arguments that Friendlypitbull and myself have been making--added foot traffic for small businesses, refurbishment of dilapidated rides and stores, increased land value (for all the bellyaching about rising rents there are also many that benefit from this), and the importance of resisting nostalgia towards an "emaciated" form of the area. So thanks, LeeHo. -
The foot traffic doesn't matter anymore, escap. They won't even be there. That is a huge conditional. Business owners would be happy with increased foot traffic if they could be there to reep the benefits.
The Voice article was from 2005 and before Thor dev. bough Astroland. -
I beg to differ regarding small businesses. There are hundreds of stores, if not thousands, in the surrounding area, that are not in the footprint of this plan. They will virtually all likely benefit from the development.

escap, you are , like, totally rad, man. I'm guessing that most of the mom and pops will simply be swept to the side by all of the inevitable chains that open up there. Soon, "eatin' good in the neighborhood" will mean having a totally rad burger from Applebees that i could get in, like, any awesome Strip mall in America. That's really comfortable for me and I know I like Applebees. So rad that all of the small joints closed because that foot traffic simply didn't make it outside of the really cool, sterile atmosphere of a totally rad mall, man. Maybe TGI Fridays will put up some cool "retro" tin things on the wall that were replicated to look like they were from the place I'll be sitting. It's so awesome when they do that. They totally make you feel awesome about stuff that, like, isn't, like there, ya know?
It's an awesome idea. Like, totally rad. I know my boring, emo-lovin' ass will like, totally benefit from the Coney Island of the future.
This is AWESOME. -
Well, first of all I'll address your point, before I really get started. Simply, you're just rehashing the same tired old song that any development created on a large scale will destroy small businesses in favor of chains, regardless of the fact that this is simply not true. Increased foot traffic will, as the article itself suggested, greatly benefit the small businesses of the area, and create opportunities for others to open up. Just b/c this doesn't conform to your agenda doesn't change anything. Also, don't you find it somewhat hypocritical that you show such disdain towards chains while waxing nostalgic about Nathan's? Get a clue.
Second, where do you get off giving me that kind of attitude? You need to check your sarcastic bullshit and get over yourself. What's with the surfer dude talk, anyway--I kind of doubt surfers are the types you're even trying to go after. Are you one of these pitiful types who fled some all white suburb hoping to keep it real here in Crooklyn, only to realize that the people in NYC who really like Applebees and Big Macs are the bus drivers and the janitors, not the yuppies? Does this upset the carefully constructed world you're trying to create for yourself? How is it that pseudo-intellectual hipster snobs who just came here (or wherever they're from) think they can look down their noses at natives because they like to post snarky messages on blogs from their wifi internet cafe while they pretend that their daddy-financed pursuit of mediocre artistic ability makes them cooler than all the shmucks who slave after the almighty dollar?
It's one thing to just be wrong, 'gnarly dude', and I'd be happy to check back in 5 years to see whose prediction turns out correct. But don't even give me that kind of snarky bullshit because you are in no place to talk to me about keeping New York New York. -
won't the cyclone look weird alone next to a bunch of condos!?
-
YES it will!

I can't believe I'm replying to a November post...
Thor are a bunch of crooks - they are not going to build anything close or resembling luxury or amusement - this is gonna be a cocrete monstrocity with cubbyholes for apartments and they will call it ultimate luxury condos, top-of-the-line blah blah blah - like granite countertops are made of gold.
But, the new immigrants from Iraq and the arab nations will buty them at 900K a piece - being refugees from impoverished, war-torn battlezones. Yep.
My Dad and I once did repair jobs on the Ferris Wheel and the Cyclone, I had to ride it to test the connectivity of the tracks - it's really a risk, people don't know half of the risk when they ride it.
Howdy, Stranger!
